@@khafaniking1230 In my inexpert opinion its probably because they are trying to push the narrative that the police are aggressively militarizing and i guess that they didn't want something positive like a police chief rejecting this expanded arsenal. But hey I don't have a degree in English or journalism so i could be completely wrong.

@Vengeful_Asura @Vengeful_Asura I mean it’s not really pushing imo, the trend has truth to it. My reasoning is that it probably just comes off as awkward place wise because they already stated that militarization of the police creates a different atmosphere and attitude, and then led into the availability of equipment lent to police.highlighting and narrating the rest of the quote would be like sort of briefly flip flopping, even though they do touch on how police view themselves/awareness at the end of the video. And they touch on it in the same positive positive perspective you were talking about, with a former MP and civilian policeman talking about reform.

There's not a problem with the police having more equipment with varied degrees of enforcement so they can respond to threats more effectively. It's the fact that they deploy military grade equipment on the dumbest of things. You shouldn't respond in the same manner to a peaceful manifestation than to a bank assault or terroristic threats.

@TheSilverwolf97
@TheSilverwolf97 Жыл бұрын
I mean gas is an effective tool to disperse a mob of people, but the problem is that it doesn't distinguish between a rioter and an innocent person, it can actually be even used against the police force itself. So yeah, not the best thing to bring to a protest which can involve innocent bystanders and even children and it leaves the zone unusable for an entire day. Gas is better suited in other scenarios like siege an illegal occupation, not on the streets in the middle of a protest. Thats why, have the gear, don't deploy it on every occasion, a hammer is not the best tool every time.

William Adama yes!. However, the police aren't legally required to protect us (U.S. Supreme Court has said this years ago, it is case law) they enforce laws. I would argue the military defends and fights enemies; civilians are NOT the enemy. This makes the police rather loathsome, nannies looking for law breakers, which is why people love the military and hate the police.

You may have missed the point. the entire entrance argument was on how the public will see things. the police which is supposed to be a protective internal group shows up to a protest looking like a militant armed force. how is anyone showing up for a peaceful protest supposed to feel okay when the police show up in riot gear (with 1 of the clips shows them sitting down and asking "why are you in riot gear")

Italian Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza are military corps which have policing roles, but there are some marked differences between basically Squadre Radiomobili and the military battalions. Also those who are assigned to policing roles does not carry any kind of military gear, only special operations team as GIS for terroris attack or hostages situasions. I do not know if you are Italian, but I think the European way of using police is better than the American one, less violent and more efficient, also, generally speaking, police forces in Europe are seen as a good presence.

At least American riot police are trained to give an open space for protestors to leave. I’ve seen a few videos of Russian riot police whose doctrine sort of goes like this: Disorient with water cannons Advance inwards towards the crowd Beat and grab the remaining rioters to arrest Keep beating till they all surrender. Oh and the Chinese police... there are no riots in China, especially in the prosperous year of 1989.

People who glorify violence, have eacist tendencies or want to fulfill power fantasies should not be in that profession, swat teams should be highly trained and used only way nin the most dire of situatuions and cops in generel should only be called if there is an actual crime (not for homelessness, rowdy students, runnaway cats or mentally ill)

Here's wikipedia's TL;DR: The Sudanese Revolution was a major shift of political power in Sudan that started with street protests throughout Sudan on 19 December 2018 and continued with sustained civil disobedience for about eight months, during which the 11 April 2019 Sudanese coup d'état deposed President Omar al-Bashir after thirty years in power, 3 June Khartoum massacre took place under the leadership of the Transitional Military Council that replaced al-Bashir, and in July and August 2019 the TMC and the Forces of Freedom and Change alliance signed a Political Agreement and a Draft Constitutional Declaration legally defining a planned 39-month phase of transitional state institutions and procedures to return Sudan to a civilian democracy. Vox needs to do better regarding the accuracy of terms in their scripts. They use the terms "assault weapon," "automatic weapon," and "military weapons" interchangeably, and then apply those terms to both the M-16 and the AR-15. An AR-15 is NOT an assault rifle like the M-16. It is not a military weapon. It is a semi-automatic rifle (just like most hand guns are semi-automatic). It does not have select fire capabilities, and has a fixed magazine instead of a detachable box magazine. "AR" in the term "AR-15" stands for ArmaLite NOT assault rifle.

It’s a truth; nonetheless, a necessary one. The US is running out of natural resources. China isn’t. The US buys most of its rare earth metals from China, which is a huge supply chain risk. @Hersatz
@Hersatz 4 жыл бұрын
If a society is taken to the point of riot, police shouldn't be allowed to protect the government from its citizens. Riots come from deep and unresolved issue. A society doesn't start to destroy parts of itself for the sake of it. It put it at risk as much as it does the government. But it's the only weapon it has against something that is otherwise far too strong to beat. Police shouldn't be allowed to help the government to repress such cries for change. Erzats Erz how can you look at it like that? I’m just confused? Riots come from when people are mad. Not “deep and unresolved issues”. People destroy society for many reasons. But this time it’s for things like a TV or something or even nothing at all. Police aren’t just helping the government, which at the moment they should be doing so, they’re protecting people, businesses, VETERANS MEMORIALS, etc. In plus what exactly are they “repressing”? These “cries for change” don’t make any sense. I think they should stop using tear gas, rubber bullets, etc and start using real bullets.

Not really. Many of these vandals, rioters and extremists has created a war-esque situation, which warrants a militarized and brutal crackdown by our federal authorities in order to restore peace and remove illegal elements from our country. Downsizing these aspects will only create an increase in crime, illegal activities and lawlessness which benefits the individuals who deserves it the least.

Serenity and why do you think these protesters are creatures these war-like situations in the first place. Do you think they wanna risk getting tear gassed and possibly killed? This is NOT a problem with the protesters. When you’re intimidated, your fight or flight response kicks in.

@@SerenityM54L2SAM5L5N1 Yet time and time again, it is the police that escalate protests from peaceful to violent. Attacking peaceful protests turn them violent, the war like mentality of the police is causing them to turn into wars. Kinda unsurprising that the side with all the weapons encourages situations where firepower decides the outcome.

@@neeneko I responded with a long paragraph, but KZbin's annoying filtering system removed it. *sigh*. The police are responding after reports have been made. They're there after a crime or esclated situation has surfaced. Those contributing to a prolonged unrest, those defying orders, those staying in the way, and particularly those committing severe crimes, will be handled roughly by the police for good and necessary reason.

I get the snark in your comment, but it's not really accurate. There is/was no money being exchanged here by government to private companies. The 1033 program was US military passing on surplus kit that was already bought and paid for to the police for next to nothing. This is more like an outgrowth of US warrior culture which is seeping into every facet of civilian life.

Yes, this is my biggest gripe with that whole mentality. The police force should be an outgrowth of the community it serves. As much as possible the majority of police on the force should know the community they serve because they were part of it. Not knowing the people, the behavior, the culture, etc. creates misunderstandings that lead the larger problems that should have been small. It needs to be a community project, not an us versus them.
