For years I thought the eggs were fake props whenever I would see them on countertops in one of those cylindrical metal baskets or wicker baskets on TV, movies, or pictures in magazines. I thought they were fake like the fake fruit that real-life people had/*have(?) in bowls or vases on their tables.😂 I didn't realize until I got older that some people keep their eggs on the counter instead of the fridge. *Do people still have that waxy @ $$ fake fruit on display in their living rooms?😂 Is that still a thing? I know back in the late 80s and into the 90s it seemed like everybody had that fake fruit.

In Australia, we refrigerate our eggs, not because we wash them. (Most farms do a dry wash system here. They just wipe the muck off them with a towel before shipping them to the supermarkets). But because it gets *SO* hot here if you don't refrigerate. Them they can explode in the heat.

As I was growing up, I never knew why we had our storebought eggs in the fridge and our chicken's eggs by the sink, I finally asked my mom. Long story short, washing your egg washes off a protective layer that makes your egg last longer when its not refridgerated, that is why hens don't need to refridgerate their eggs.

It also depends on when you consume the eggs. Generally if you consume eggs within 1-2 weeks you can leave them out of the fridge, but when the expiry date is near it is better to put them in the fridge. furthermore it also depends on the outside temperature (if it's 20C in the kitchen it's fine, if it's already 35-40C it's better to put them in the fridge).

One good part about living in such a rural area is that it's pretty easy to find people that sell fresh eggs. We buy ours from an older lady that keeps chickens and keep them in a basket on the counter. Each dozen is a variety of brown, white, blue-ish green, huge and small eggs. We were paying $2 a dozen but she recently had to raise the price to $3 cuz of the cost of feed going up but it's still a better deal for fresh eggs. You really can tell the difference, especially in the yolks. They're much more orange and richer than the ones from the grocery store.

You don't need to vaccinate the hens in order to have shelf stable eggs. My family raised chickens when I was a child. The key is not to wash them until you're ready to eat them. They have a natural coating on the shell when freshly layed which prevents them from going bad for quite a while. We always left them on the counter instead of refrigerating them.

YES! It has NOTHING to do with vaccination, this is a lie. Unwashed eggs pass through the same opening that chicken feces passes through, so you have to wash the eggs and your hands or you have feces on them when cracking them. In the US they prewash, but the downside is it removes a protective coating, and so needs refrigeration. There is no one or other better way.

It's not required here in RU but almost everyone do this simply by habit and to make sure the eggs are as fresh as they can be. Everyone have an egg holder in the fridge so why not use it? According to the RU standard for the chicken eggs (GOST R 52121-2003) you can store regular eggs for 25 days outside the fridge. If they were washed then by this standard their shelf life is 12 days. These numbers are for the room temperature of 20 degrees Celsius.

I regularly eat eggs 2 weeks or more past their best before and they never seem to be spoiled. Not kept in fridge. The color of the egg depends on the chicken's genetics. Certain chicken breeds naturally lay brown eggs, while others lay white eggs. There are even breeds that can lay eggs in other colors, such as blue or green, but these are less common in Germany.

After their best before date, eggs always have to be refrigerated. However before that, they don't have to be, at least in Germany and the UK (that's basically the whole point, the eggs sold in the US need to be refrigerated immediately after buying). In Germany or the UK, it may even be more harmful to put them in the refrigerator.

Yes, but vaccination has NOTHING to do with it. US chickens are also vaxed and given antibiotics often, however, it has to do with FECES. European eggs have a protective coating AND feces on them, and so have to be washed and your hands washed prior to cracking, eliminating the need for refrigeration but requiring the need for washing yourself and the egg prior to consumption. US eggs are prewashed but need refrigeration. One uses electricity, the other uses water and soap, which is more convenient is debatable.

Usually, if the eggs are freshly laid, they can be stored unrefrigerated for 21 days (21 days because the chick's incubation period takes about that long. The protection of the eggshell becomes porous after this time and allows bacteria or salmonella to pass through) . After the 21 days you can then store them in the refrigerator for a maximum of 2 weeks. (So they would last for a maximum of 35 days.) I learned that in school. It would be advisable to store them directly refrigerated, but then separately, such as on an egg rack or on the bottom shelf, to avoid cross-contamination. Please don't forget that eggs are sensitive to smells and also absorb the smells like milk does too.

For example, if you have a salami, fish or a smelling cheese next to the milk or eggs, the products absorb the smell and then taste like it. hope that's understandable. If you are outside of America, pay attention to the laying date printed on the eggs maybe the eggs are a little older in the market, can happen with imported products.

In countries where the cuticle isn't removed, you'll see the eggs in stores on shelves, not being cooled. You should still refrigerate them when you get home, as they keep for longer that way. The reason stores don't cool them is that during the trip home from the store, the eggs will be colder than the outside and will have water condense on them, making them spoil even faster

I'm so glad u made this video. I'm in the USA and I have chickens. I don't refrigerate my eggs, or wash them. I keep them all in an enormous basket. I pull them out and rotate the newest ones into the bottom each time I've gathered eggs. I have to teach people what to do with eggs all the time. You take the eggs when u r ready to cook them, u float the egg in a glass of water. If it floats to the top, it's bad. Then u wash them. Crack each egg one by one in a bowl before u add that egg into the main bowl of eggs in case there is a bad one so it doesn't ruin the batch of raw egg. The people that get salmonella get it from eggs that are overly cleaned and scrubbed from caged chickens where bacteria have been prevalent. I've eaten an egg without washing it with muddy poopy dried junk on the shell before. No problems at all. Ever.

That's fine if you produce your own eggs but thats extra work for the consumer. And consumers can't necessarily be trusted to be responsible and mindful about that either. You don't actually mention washing up during that process, you do of course, right? When I look at documented salmonella outbreaks in the United States it's almost always other food products. The last case of it from shell eggs being recalled was in 2018, 5 years ago and how many eggs have been produced, washed and sold commercially in the United States since then? It's not like there's a shell egg salmonella crisis in the United States because we wash them in production and packaging. If you are producing your own eggs and not selling them it's fine to not wash them or refrigerate them unless they have poop on them, which should be removed at least dry cleaning them or wet washing them. If selling eggs in the USA they need to be washed and sterilized on the outside. Whether they look clean or not. Leaving the cuticle or bloom on allows them to go unrefrigerated, and will extend the shelf-life, but all my eggs are commercially washed, refrigerated. And Ive pulled some mighty old eggs out of the package and crack them and they were still good eggs that were fine to eat and sanitary. With little if any quality degradation. I really have no idea just how long some people want to store eggs before using them. But the longer shelf life of unwashed eggs seems of little practical benefit to me. If you live somewhere where there may be natural disasters and extended periods without refrigeration yeah sure it may be beneficial to stash unwashed eggs, refrigerate them, and when that's lost they're fine returning to room temperature. Not really seeing a great benefit here otherwise.
