I'm a retired USA citizen of Portuguese descent that moved to Portugal 2 years ago. The Golden Visa program was designed to pump more money into the Portuguese economy but greedy real estate investors (largely from the US) only drove prices so high, the government ended the program. To be fair, Portugal also made a crapload of money. They have also stopped issuing permits for temporary rentals, (AIR BnB's) in Lisbon and Porto, in an attempt to get prices down for the Portuguese citizens.

Population of Americans in Portugal doesn’t even scratch surface. Foreigners speak English doesn’t mean they are American. I think Portuguese dislike “American “ because they don’t like USA politically. USA is a hegemony trying to control countries worldwide and has history bad actions in other countries. Just look at Ukraine what they are doing to this country. Using it for endless war with R, when Ukraine has already lost it. Now they are recruiting women…. It is sick. Watch out that you vote for politicians who have Portuguese interests at heart, not the ones who are US puppets. Keep identity of Portugal, don’t become USA colony…

The government ended the golden visa so yeah, duh, of course there's less interest in it. But they failed to mention there are other visas available, aside from a dopey digital nomad visa. The visa that by far most people who aren't euro citizens, enter Portugal with, is the D7, which allows virtually anyone to migrate there. The golden visa is for people who invest half a million and up, which is obviously not most people. It's like the reporter spoke to one person, and decided to publish something without any research and then make it sound like without the golden visa, there's no way to move to Portugal.

Americans also moved there thinking Portugal=Spain. Portuguese culture and history are non-existent in US schools, but Spanish and Mexican culture are widely relied upon to explain how Europe got to the Americas. Americans conflate Mexican and Spanish culture together. Therefore, Americans assure themselves that they are experts on all things Spanish and Mexican and they expect to find chips and salsa, quesadillas, and margaritas in abundance when they move to Portugal. It must be a huge let down to find out that speaking Spanish to the Portuguese is actually offensive.

If you have a difficult condition in any country, you should live close to a university hospital with a good reputation for research. Like I did with Coimbra. Housing is expensive in Lisbon or Porto. But in many other areas reasonable. And public transportation issues?!? Again, where did she live? I’ve never been in a place with such cheap and accessible trains and buses. I can get from Coimbra to Porto for less than €10. Where could I do that in the USA? Yes, people coming from overseas no longer get a ten-year tax holiday. Foreigners moving to the USA also don’t.

Portugal is a small but beautiful country with a small economy and population. It is impossible for Portugal to accommodate the number of people who would like to reside there. Foreigners with money as well as the will and ingenuity to invest and expand the country's industrial base are always welcome. This would keep the country's brightest and best educated living in Portugal contributing to its wealth and economic growth. Portugal cannot afford to continue the bleeding, or the leaving of its best educated youth to other European countries. This is the biggest drain on the Portuguese economy keeping it endlessly stifled. Iti's Portugal's greatest national problem and the country has yet to find the will to resolve it. As for others they are welcome to visit, enjoy the country's beauty and culture, then graciously return to their home countries.

Although, we appreciate foreign investors, people need to realize that we are a very small country of just 10 million citizens. We don't have the sort of infrastructure and available housing to sustain the doubling of our population. Some expats come to Portugal to take advantage of our poverty in hopes that they can live like kings at the expense of Portuguese low-wages. We are not a developing country. We struggle to provide economic opportunities for our own citizens to sustain future prosperity and the sort of foreign investment we desire is the sort of investment that works for everyone, not just those trying to get the better end of the deal. Americans tend to have a justified sense of exploitation so when they come to Portugal to live here, they become disappointed when the whole country doesn't bow down to their every needs. Today I have a choice to go to USA (process will take less then an year, H1B, will cost me around $8000 for processing) I am working in Portugal since 1 month in Telecom sector, on Tech Visa, 2000 euro plus salary. What advise will you give me, stay here or move to USA. Kindly support to make a choice for me and my family (Me, wife, mother, two little daughters). Thank you in advance.

How in the world can someone give you such a big advice on a YT comment reply? First, you would need 3x your Portuguese salary to live well in the US. And it would much depend on where you would live. If I were you I would get a remote job and go back to Pakistan. To a calm place. It is your country and with a remote job you would live extremely well.

This 2 minute video is just trash…you have literally just sold a narrative that you want to sell. The golden visa isn’t dead, they just ended it in areas that ‘filled up’, it’s still available in outer regions. And BTW, Americans make up like 8-10% of those, Chinese GV is around 40%. Please tell me how foreigners are driving up real estate prices…when you clearly skipped over the global inflation and global real estate prices. If a local Portuguese person owns a house in (for example) Lisbon, they MAKE A CHOICE to sell it to foreigners. Why? To make more money off of it. They could sell only to locals, but they want the highest price most money. Not exactly the foreigners fault. And so what if some people can’t make it work out, maybe they should have done more research before making the jump. I spent 5 YEARS researching and visiting before moving here. If you’re an immigrant, it ain’t always smooth sailing. Yes there’s red tape, yes there’s some issues with healthcare, and yes there’s big cultural differences. If you’re American and expect it to be like America except cheaper, do yourself a favor and stay where you are. Trust me.

Living in Lisbon is not a sacred right. It is how it is and it has been always like that. Living in Lisbon was always for the rich since at least the XV Century. Of course the houses are very expensive in Lisbon but look for the place. One of the best of World. Nice weather, nice health services, safe place, good people, etc. It is like living in one "living museum". Real estate prices are too expensive now in Portugal but think twice: Lisbon is now the "head capital" of the World. The heart of the Western Civilised World. And that became too pricey and expensive. Lisbon is for the rich of our World. I would like to drive one Bentley but I lack money for it. Then it is the same as living in Lisbon. I would like to live in Lisbon but I only have one house in Porto.

I think you drank the koolaid a little too hard. Lisbon doesn't even begin to compare to the main cities of it's neighbour to the East (Barcelona, Madrid), let alone the other, even more developed neighbours (Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam).... Put all that pride into working to make your country a little more developed rather than on those boastful declarations.

Except the financial aspects, the Portugal (mono culture?) isn t compatible, with the higher educated North American and North European countries, as well France. Italy is mucht better, if you go from Faro to Huelva in Spain, your backin ,,normal,, Europe. The best younger Portuguese already left or are leaving, to those northen countries. The expats and foreign residents don t mix up with for all kind of issues and reasons..Even if you speak fluently portuguese. It s very superficial, empty.futil. not open minded at all, mostly older people to find, that s why you can enter the country so easy. Portuguese like the money bringing tourists, but not the foreigners and residents that live there. There kept out. They don t travel to different countries, but know your country better than you do,😀. Portugal still looks like older east europe communistic countries, that in the meantime did do much better,in a far shorter time. For a short time or holiday, it s ok. If you like a very flawed democracy, and bad ot not organised country, portugal might be your country. I live(d) 10 years in Portugal, a very shaky period.

In your opinion, what are the main differences between Faro and Huelva for example, and why does Huelva seem like "normal" Europe where Faro does not? Love your reply, really interested in knowing more about your comparison though 😊

@cultugarvealgarve7380 Жыл бұрын
In Huelva, the people read newspapers outside, !!!!!people holding outside manifestations for all kinds of rights, !!!!some punkers blowing outside next to the police, while talking to them. The spanish there don t speak english so much, like the commercial Algarve portuguese, but show far more passion and action etc. After the Franco dictatorship, in 1975 their democratic funding was done by high educated people, in 76 portugal it was done sloppy by the army. In a poor bad organised country you aren t a citizin member, but a family member. So keep all others out. This Spain all looks far more to Europe, than anxious small minded fatalistic Portugal. Fado is derived from the word fato, fate and fatalism, endless complaining, but nothing to do against it, not to lose the loved victimship. Fate and old remains of religion, you might expect from the former Eastblock sovjet countries ,that in the meantime left Portugal far behind, inspite of the gigantic EU susidies, mostly stolen by the politicians to buy voters. many brighter Portuguese told me, it s in fact already 500 years like this, and the best Portuguese left their country, to northern EU or North America etc etc. From the new university graduates, a third directly moves out to foreign countries. The average Portuguese doesn t mind very much for it s health. The eu journalist are based in Madrid, they aren t interested in Portugal, and A Barcelona you wont find in Portugal at all. Only boring things.
