Small cars and trucks have disappeared from the US market and many believe that it's simply because Americans don't want them anymore. While they may have fallen out of popularity, there's still room for at least one small car, right? The real reason for their exit has to do with fuel economy.
Fuel economy regulations are based on vehicle size (specifically, the footprint or wheelbase x track) and small vehicles are subject to more intense fuel economy standards than bigger cars.
For example, for the 2026 Model Year, a Honda Fit would need to get 67 miles per gallon to avoid fines, an impossible task even as a hybrid. The Prius is the most fuel-efficient vehicle for sale in the US, and it only gets 57mpg while using a sleek aerodynamic design.
