Having the Headrush FRFR-108 with me for practice sessions or on stage at a gig for that 'feel' component (not to mention the feedback component) while maintaining my desired tone _at all times at all volumes_ is amazing. No matter how many tubes or real amps you use, in the end the sound will go into a mic and through a full range pa speaker to the audience, so your guitar sounds like it is coming out of a pa speaker because it comes out of a pa speaker.

This is what I hate about videos like this and another one he made about trying digital. Of course you cant FEEL the tone because thats 100% NOT what modeling is. It is mimicking a mic’d up amp which is exactly what you hear in a live band show or in IEMs

@@davidwales9657 For incompetent/egotistic sound guys or rarely, because of bad musicians that can’t/won’t set a reasonable stage volume. Ever been at a small club in the front row and all you can hear is drums? That’s direct. If there are fill speakers on stage, why not do that with a real amp? Musicians don’t exist to support the sound tech, it’s the other way round. Direct has it’s place, but backline IS the rock and metal experience. I really don’t care that my amp is messing with the sound guys mental ideal. That’s what sound check is for. I’ll turn down somewhat if asked, and sound guy can deal with it from there.

That's a godsend for who lives in a flat. The volume is manageable while keeping the tone intact, something that you can't achieve with amp + speakers in a flat...or you must get an attenuator, but it's another piece of gear that you have to purchase on top

I love my modelers into real tube power into my 412's. It's damn good. Haven't gelled with FRFR's alone. Even a 212 with my setup rocks. Modelers with speaker IR's are great for recording but live, run it into some real tube power and cabs and feel the notes. Let the FOH run the PA..

One thing I feel might make it not feel as "clinically clean" is the Dr. Bonkers IRs. I don't know about the rest, but the ones made from Sunn cabinets also contain IRs where it's not just the mic in front of the speaker, but was made also with a contact mic on the cabinet to get the "room rumble" of cabinet. You wouldn't use those to record necesarily, but for feeding into a FRFR, it *REALLY* brings it back to sounding like a cab in a room rather than a mic'd cab coming through a speaker, if that makes any sense..

It's great if you play a lot at places with PA systems since you can EQ your rigs in my case (using headrush) for PA and be ready to go.

Not sure what you mean. How is that different from EQing a combo or half stack or amp in a box through the PA?

​​​@@heyjarrod because a pa gives all frequency so it can do anything and an amp acts like a natural eq. ...so in your amp sim or multi effects pedal like head rush you have access to frequency ranges wider than a real amp so it can be suitable for bass, vocal, guitars and pretty much any instrument and thus you might not have eq'd out enough bass or treble if you are alway playing through a real amp as it acts like a physical eq so your presets could sound boomy or really trebley direct to a PA using amp sims in the effects units People using amp sims/ it's etc know about this as to make the sound closer to a real amp especially when recording you restrict the frequency range.

@@heyjarrod The speaker in guitar cabs provides EQ for the Amp Putting an Amp into a flat response speaker actually sounds pretty terrible since there’s almost zero EQ You need to put a cabinet IR in the flat response speaker to make it sound like a normal guitar cabinet

Honestly the real advantage of the FRFR setup is being able to use different IRs for different sounds like having different cabinets available Judging by how much impact the speaker has on the sound it's a great tool for variety in sound but can also be a pain since you got so many options

They definitely dont have the same impact as cabs though. Of course that only matters if you're close enough to hear it. As far as playing on stage in a good sized venue the audience will not hear any difference. Not saying they don't sound good, in fact they sound great. Just the thump you get from a big cab, the way a big 4x12 is able to push air, you just dont get that from an FRFR speaker. Admittedly this may or may not be important to some.

Honestly I'm starting to think that the "thump" people obsess about is more of hindrance for me than a good thing. I'd much rather hear what the audience is hearing but then again I'm a sound engineering minded guitarist and want to focus on the big picture instead of how one part of the equation makes me feel on stage. Thumpy cabs always annoyed me.

Agreed, I tried the FRFR setup for a while but just really couldn't make myself like it. I don't know maybe I didn't use the correct IR's. Purchased a Full Amp setup with a pair of 1x12 speakers and I have basically the same portability and 90% of the sound.. But there is nothing like playing through a 4x12 though.

Another use case is for smaller bands on smaller stages that go direct into FOH. They can have stage volume without a huge cab taking space, which leaves more room for banners or stage props. It's a terrible feeling being in front of the stage and all you hear is drums because they have no stage volume. FRFR speakers is definitely a more local band thing. I've done shows where there is no PA at all and the FRFR is a life saver there too.

I was messing around with both your preferred setup and this type of setup last night. Had one output of my amp to a 4x12, and one output into my Boss TAE and lined that out to a monitor. Pretty fun setup honestly. Kind of unnecessary if you already have FOH setup but just another plus for the TAE, it’s stupidly versatile.

I have the same speaker, my use case is that I can play guitar even if I don't want to sit in front of the computer and I can switch IRs easily. That you cannot do with a power amp + guitar cab setup using your Axe, Quad, ToneX whatever modeller. One more useful thing: it also works fine with my e-drum kit!

I've used passive PA speakers as "guitar cabs" using an IR/cab sim pedal in the FX loop of a Joyo bantamp before. Likewise, I've used preamp pedals and amp modeler/multi-fx pedals through a PA head to power a guitar cabinet, and even used an ABY to blend tones before (actually, this is my current go--to live rig). Acoustic guitar combo amps and active PA units work great as long as you have a decent cab sim or an IR loader.

I've personally tried a dozen or so frfr setups, The only one I can think of off hand that I enjoyed was running my Atomic Ampli-fire box MKII straight into a friedman FRFR 1x12". I suppose I enjoyed it more cause the friedman was designed more like a cab. Pretty awesome apartment to gig friendly budget rig if you're really into it.

Here's a use case: playing live with a modeler, but you want stage volume for the people standing all the way up front, and you don't want to deal with huge amps or you can't get a second send without cab sim.

I use the poorman's version of that setup: Zoom G1on for distortion and effects into a Cuvave Cube Baby for IRs and additional effects into a portable 10W speaker with RGB lights that look like flames. It sounds good enough to jam around and maybe for busking hah I've seen other people here in Colombia with a similar setup and they've achieved really good results.

@@cleangoblin2021 I guess having a full range flat response speaker would be really great for awesome results and sounds that will be affected by acoustics and burried in a live mix with other instruments. Maybe going for a cheap speaker is a wise option. By the way, I got to use the Cube Baby live at a concert since the amplifier I was going to use died when doing sound check. The Cube Baby was so good that the monitor and FOH engineers asked for more info.

I use my Tonex with a Headrush 112 FRFR, and it's worked brilliantly for me. I use it as a personal wedge monitor live, even when I have IEM's. I pull my guitar back in my ear mix and let the FRFR fill in. It gives my guitar tone punch and depth for my personal monitor mix. If you try to use the FRFR like a conventional amp cab, you will be disappointed. It feels more stiff and lacking in dynamics compared to a real amp.

I line out of my acoustic amp into headrush 108...awesome, best sound yet. out of the 108 I go to front of house. acoustic set has never sounded better. I dont think they are targeting metal players....I play a Vox ac15c2 for that. I'm 52 so I use a 808 tube screamer, It gets me there.

Skipped the FRFR route and chose a VHT 2150 into a real cabinet, VHT as well. Use my axefx3 as the preamp and the thing just kicks like nothing else

A high quality frfr thats loud but not necessarily big will make all the difference. Also if any of you haven't experienced a true stereo sound in your own rig its life changing. I use a GX 100 with 2 Mackie thump gos. Speakers are 200 watts each and battery powered. Loud as a MF btw lol. I used to say loke Ola hear rhat thrpugh a cab feel gets lost on these units through a frfr... I would agree on every unit ive tried except the boss gt or gx. Using only the original IR in it. I have natural response feedback all the other units do not have. And ive tried them all. A harley benton anything speaker wise is the bottom of tone searching. Although the 4x12 cab actually sounds way above its price

I'm using a pod xt live along with mooer radar and looking for a setup at home so I can play at normal volumes (living in a flat) without sacrificing tone quality right now im using my PC speakers Was considering getting a combo amp and using fx loop but that defeats the purpose of dialing my tone and carry it to a gig I need something that will replicate my foh tone as much as possible so I can fiddle with it at home Should I consider A frfr speakers like this one? I don't care for it to be loud though, do I have other not so loud options?

Try fractal or other modeler into Fryette PS2A Power amp into an FRFR and see what you think. You can also turn off cabs in the Fractal modelers and go into the Fryette into a standard 4x12 and see how that sounds. Pretty killer in my experience

I think mine sounds great with my Boss GT1000....especially since I use several completely different tones. I use a Fender Twin or Roland JC120 clean and it nails them both completely, and use 2 FRs so I get stereo chorus. Yet I also get a convincing Marshall, Soldano, or Boogie sound for the rock songs we play. It's the closest I've gotten to having all those amps actually with me.

To me, these are for people that have grown up with plug ins and modellers (of which there are many) that want to play loudly at home but don't have dedicated guitar cabs with power amps, and have never heard their guitar tone without cab/mic emulation/IR's

I like having both. Power amp and cabs. Also have a small tube amp. And frfr speaker. I find myself just using the frfr speaker at rehearsals cuz it's plenty loud for full band at like half volume and way easier than even hauling my 2x12 cab and small power amp. Same thing live, it's easier to not have to set up patches in the modeller with split paths to foh with ir and a guitar cab without. And easier to not have to convince some sound guys you just need an xlr cable to the mixer and don't want your cab micced because it's just for stage volume and folks right up front. Bur frfr/pa also let's you use IRs so you can dial in extremely versatile tones especially if you have a guitar with fishman fluence abasis in it. Then youre good to play like any genre.

Friedman’s ASM-10 has a wonderful design, but they’ve also made a “full-range blablabla” speaker, not a guitar cab. Eden has a nice one, but for bass. I’ll keep waiting for guitar cab companies listen to us!

Buy an old (Peavey probably cheap) 12" monitor, and replace speaker wirh guitar speaker of your choice. Had a greenback in a 12" wedge that was great for guitar reinforcement

I really enjoy using a FRFR speaker (Headrush 108 in my case) with my Fractal FM3. Using it via my computer speakers (nearfield monitors) is good but hearing it LOUD via the FRFR is much more fun and honestly I'm not even missing my old 4x12 halfstacks at all 🙂 And I disagree with you, Ola in one point (personal POV) - playing with my Fractal directly into FOH with great IRs guarantee my personal perfect sound (cab, mic, mic placement). Shitty cabs and mics and inproper mic placement live...all gone. But each to its own of course ;-)

yeah for me, if I have the physical space for a large cabinet and can crank it and can afford it, I'll use a 4x12 for a lot of situations, an FRFR makes more sense, and it's not so bad an option considering if I took a full stack onstage then the FOH guy would simply put a mic on it and then.... the audience would be hearing me through a PA anyway, with an FRFR you get a better sense of what the crowd will actually be hearing and can hand that over to FOH too

I would say it depends. As an amateur musician without benefits of having rider list up to my liking and sound guy as dedicated part of my crew I wish to deliver consistent sound quality to PA desk. It is not the best in the world, but it will never be of poor quality. You go to club, don't know which amp you will find there, which cab, which mic, mic stands that are broken and falling down or mic is hanging from top of amp etc. And then does the sound guy even know where to position mic? With Tonex, Iridium, Quad, Axe, you eliminate all of those variables. Then the only challenge is how to hear yourself on stage. This is where FRFR monitor takes place - simplest way of small stage monitoring of consistent quality. It don't think it is intended to be miked.

It sounds good to me considering that room is not optimal for recording guitar audio (so much room reverb). I think people are afraid to recognize that they don't need all of that tube gear they bought, since they spent so much on it. "I spent $8,000 on this tube rig, and this $1,000 digital rig sounds the same!" "No, the FRFR and ToneX is tricking my ears. Nothing can match the 'dynamic response' of my toobs!" Everybody used to think SS amps were garbage. It turns out SS is cheaper to make and putting in small, trash speakers made it even cheaper to make. Putting in shit speakers equal shitty amp. SS always got the shitty speakers, so people though it was the amp, not the speakers. Then, amps like the Super Crush 100 come along and blow that myth right out of the water. Using large, quality speakers makes any amp sound good. Now, in the digital era, IR's capture the effect of good speakers and allow you to apply them to every amp out there and they sound no different than the toobs. All of the characteristics people were attributing to tubes, as it turns out, were actually being produced by the speakers. That's a good thing. Speakers are a known quantity that are tested and measured scientifically. The data is available to all. We know what EQ effect a V30 will have compared to an EVH. Changing the speakers is as easy as plugging the amp into a different cab or swapping the IR. Our guitar hero's tones came from the speakers they used for their recordings, which means it's the speakers and microphones that are the major factor in tone. If you use an IR that uses the same speakers and mic your hero used, it will sound like your hero.

When you also play bass, you learn that all the "great" amps nowadays are SS. Aguilar TH500 for example is amazing and is a Class D SS amp.

Don’t forget about those hot tubes getting gnarly with the speakers. A solid state won’t get all the dynamics, and overtones of a tube amp. Not that it would sound bad, just different. And depending on what kind of music you’re playing. For Metal, the skies the limit. Always getting more modern. If you don't like the sound out of it, adjust your input source! FRFR speakers can sound like anything you want them to, including "real" guitar rigs. Also key distinction, if you have a 12 inch speaker in an FRFR you will get a very different "feel" and more low end than you will get from desktop monitors, assuming that most people only have 6 or 7 inch speakers even on high end models. That missing "thunk" from the 12 inch is why a lot of people think they don't like modellers.

FRFR rigs are not supposed to be miced in any manner. it's for ears only. best way to hear what tone he was getting was a dry signal from the tonex.

it's worth remembering that many of these so called FRFR speakers aren't actually flat response. try a few and you'll find they all sound different. you do have to spend some decent money to get ones that sound good with guitar.

I use 1 Headrush 108 with the Helix LT. Volume of the Helix is 3/4 and FRFR is at less than 1, and it's LOUD

this is for "moving air" on stage using modelers. one out to FOH other out to this, behind me. my kind of rig since 2013. with in ears you will not move any air with a modeler, so it can get weird.

Never liked the sound of them. I already had a 2x12 EVH so just added the PowerStage 170 to my HX Stomp. No cab sim off course, best of both worlds.

I have no idea what any of this "IR", "modelling", "HX Stomp" etc. technology is. As far as I can tell, there's nothing wrong with gigging with a 1 x 12" combo (I use a Fender BDR), maybe some pedals, a microphone in front of the speaker going to the PA, and a monitor feed so the combo doesn't need to be stupidly loud but you still get to hear the guitar.

Being a PA guy for Raves using a FRFR speaker is gonna be more popular in the future. Guitar speakers are weak and crappy, using the term "break up" to justify using the weakest speaker possible to match the amps power output. Some day guitarists will find out how guitar amps/cabs are made so cheap and crap for the most part!

I’ve used frfr and after ages thinking there’s something not quite right, I realised it sounded like a recording, as if you were listening to a CD or something. It’s just different to a proper in the room sound. It’s not bad in any way, just different.
