In history in university we studied that a lot of hunter gatherer or early neolithic societies would build up wealth and hierarchies then completely reset by burning their progress down and becoming egalitarian.

A custom that is sometimes still practised by the Irish Traveller cmmunity. On the death of one of the community, their home is set on fire. Rare nowadays.

I think that the ritual part has been born out of the practical part. (often rituals have a practical origin even if that reason becomes lost in history) The burning of a home in the earlier farming communities would help reduce pest and the illness that would come with them. Even if they did not understand how pathogens worked. they must have noticed that burning a house at the end of the winter will remove all the pests that would hide with them in the homes. You also see this in many areas. in other places not the houses but the graine houses would be burned down for this reason. a other option you still see is that at the end of winter people will clean there entire home very thoroughly. A lot of religions even request you from doing so. resulting in the same effect. even if you don't know the background reason the act and the ritual functions a functional/practical effect of reducing the chance of becoming ill.

Love your work. However, you left out the most likely hypothesis: some waterborne disease like cholera or highly infectious one from ebola through anthrax, smallpox or plague. Unless you count deadly infection as a "pest".

Great video. I think that you are overemphasizing the role of the 'West" though. Probably it would be fair if you can present, say, the US dilemma of how to handle failig USSR / early 1990s Russia. The parallel with post-WW2 Germany does not work as Germany was defeated and occupied. Therefore, they're were no guarantees that USSR/Russia would not use any benefits from cooperation with the 'West' against the 'West'. This includes both economic and military considerations (like protecting Eastern Europe from Russia via NATO expansion). I would not give my opinion but it is safe to say that different people can make different conclusions from (a) the lack of cooperation with Russia is at fault for Russia reverting to its worst to (b) overwhelming cooperation with Russia and the policy of appeasement starting from the early 1990s eased the path for Russia reverting to its worse. ps. Keep up the great work!
