Catarina believes that we are misusing water and disrupting the water cycle, which regulates the equilibrium of our planet. She would like each of us to take local action to restore the water cycle and make a fair and sustainable use of water. ""Our local actions will reduce the chance that we blindly run into a water crisis but instead contribute to an abundant life on earth.""
Catarina has always been attracted to water. She calls it, "One of simplest but most amazing substances on earth, with a complex and unique behavior." She says water interactions are, "Like a puzzle: it looks pretty and simple when done, but you have to set the pieces together first before seeing the big picture." This is how she sees water and particularly our stewardship of water. In her research she takes inspiration from Nature to develop materials which can handle water sustainably, by being fully soaked or bone-dry depending on environment conditions.
Catarina researches polymers & colloids, surfaces & interfaces. A large part of her work deals with the synthesis of well-defined building blocks, the functionalization of surfaces, and the study of physical and chemical interactions at interfaces.
