Everywhere you see a plant on the planet, there's an incredibly biodiverse community of #fungi, bacteria and archea, and so many more organisms belowground. That is the #soil #microbiome, key to terrestrial life on Earth.
This microbiome is often overlooked in conservation and restoration efforts. Dr. Colin Averill explains above why it is so essential that we protect and restore it, where we can do that best, and how a soil microbiome transplant (yes, similar to human microbiome transplants!) actually works.
Dr. Colin Averill also led a paper on the topic - find it here: doi.org/10.1038/s41564-022-01...
ABOUT CROWTHER LAB
We are an interdisciplinary research group, harnessing big data, machine learning and satellite imagery to build global ecosystem models. Our research aims to generate a fundamental and holistic understanding of global ecology in order to understand and address the global threats of biodiversity loss and climate change. Our lab is part of ETH Zürich, one of the world’s leading universities in Earth and Environmental Sciences.
