I grew up with alcoholic parents, as an adult my therapist says that one of the reasons I survived and did not become like my parents was because I had two labradors in the house that gave me a lot of love. Not a good situation for children or dogs, when that is said, I love dogs much more than people.

I was in a bad situation at the age of 11 to 14 with my dad and stepmother. We had two black Labs (One was my birthday present when I turned six and the mother of the other Lab.) and it was one of my chores to feed them. I used to crawl in their dog house and hang out with them as long as I could in the evenings after cooking dinner and cleaning the kitchen. It was my refuge and solace to cuddle with them. At that time, they were my only source at home of feeling loved and wanted.

I am also an adult child of alcoholics....have you read the Woititz book "Adult Children of Alcoholics" ? We did not have a family dog but we did have a cat....I work full time and will not rescue a dog until I can retire...DOGS NEED someone there with them...I live alone!

The way A.Cooper was actually hopeful that Lily had a special friendliness DNA and laugh at the 'average result' but then keep on insisting about how special she is for almost a full minute is hilarious 🤣. I get him though, I would want my pooch to be special too. Till the end of his interview with the expert, he's still insisting that Lily is not an average dog, it shows how much he loves and adores Lily, both are adorable ~❤😁

Just lost my boxer to bloat yesterday ! He was only five years old that's him in my home pic. With my Dad's Navy hat on and a pipe in his mouth. I had No idea about bloat. Doc told me I would have to cut him open and un-twist his stomach. I am so sad! He was such a great dog.😪😪

@@bluekitty3731 My boy was very smart he was a big guy around 100lbs. Took him to the ocean at 3 months old he loved it.He would swim for hours. I'm a severe asthmatic. I had a attack lost conscious.He went and got my neighbor who called 911. Was in the VA hospital for 5 days. He saved my life but I couldn't save his. I've always had Boxers my last before this one lived 12 years.Wish I knew he was sick bloat just came on it's a horrible thing. I never knew about it feel awful.

Andersons dog Lily has the kind of traits i seek out when interacting with dogs. But if wolves lack the mutation, why do some wild wolves show affection to humans they're familiar with when they're visited by them on their turf out in the wild? I've seen them give their belly up for them, a most vulnerable position for a wolf to take?

Blue heelers aren't generally especially friendly, they're pretty independent. Great dogs, very territorial and can be a bit nippy. They're called heelers because they're absolutely fearless with cattle and they "heel" them - nip them on the back of the leg - to get their attention. Love the herding breeds, my last old mate, who died a few months back at nearly 14, was a kelpie x collie, with something big like maremma thrown into the mix (he was nearly 50kg). Incredibly smart, faithful, protective, easy-going old bloke. I miss him a lot.

That genetics can explain certain personality traits in dogs such as friendliness toward humans suggests that genetics might also be able to explain certain personality traits in humans, possibly including intelligence. Scary thought!

Yes, that's literally how it works. Much more complicated, but basically you have genes for things like friendliness and intelligence just like you do for eye and hair color. But, some genes are turned on and off by environmental stimuli, so your genetic can also be limited by your early environment.

Sort of. Domestic dogs began to diverge genetically from wolves about 35,000 years ago. This is about 20,000 years before we have any physical evidence of dogs and humans cohabitating. The prevailing theory is that wolves realized that human settlements had food (mostly discarded stuff outside our main camp, like bones) that were easy pickings for wolves brave enough to venture into our territory. Early humans likely killed or ran off the most aggressive wolves, so the ones that had offspring that continued to hang around our trash were less hostile and more social. This pattern continued for an unknown amount of time. Our earliest record of a joint human-dog burial is about 14,000 years ago in modern day Germany. This means that by at *least* 14,000 years ago, dogs were important enough to be buried with us. This doesn't mean that we won't find earlier evidence eventually, but that's what we can confirm right now. How do I know? I wrote my MA thesis on human-canine interaction and communication.

I believe some wolves which eventually evolved in to dogs bit human beings thousands of years ago and got our DNA in their bloodstream and passed it on to succeeding generations up to the present. Apparently one of the genes the inherited from us through those bites is the "friendliness" gene which explains why they are so instantly bonded to people.

In terms of what? Which genes are turned on? Most dogs look about the same in terms of which friendly genes are turned on. I suspect pariah dogs (ancient breeds closest to their wild ancestors like Basenji, Formosan Mountain Dogs, etc) may be the best for future comparison since these breeds could provide that link, though any breed that had been bred by humans for any length of time probably looks similar. I suspect you'd need to look at dogs that have been feral for many generations to potentially see a difference.
