Apple has promised that their payment method is safer than traditional credit or debit cards, but what exactly makes Apple Pay safer?
Well, the problem with cards is that their most sensitive information is displayed for all to see. By snapping a couple photos, thief’s can capture the card’s number, expiration date, and security code and use it to make purchases.

Something that's been left out of this video is that in general, Apple Pay is also more secure than contactless. Literally the first thing you see when you go to use it is a Face ID prompt. In addition, the value transmitted to the card reader can only be used once afterwards. A maliciously modified reader cannot possibly charge you multiple times, and people attempting to get close to people and use contactless through people's wallets won't be able to get your details.

Sad. Your country should just adopt policies like India, every payment app are mandatory to sync with each other here. If apple keeps on trying "only works with apple thing", "only safe in apple" they will be left out, they should rather try "works everywhere", "safety for everyone".

@@CatCafeLIVE I’m sorry what? 😂 I’m so confused about your comment I don’t know where to start. First, of course card terminal won’t tell the difference between normal card and Apple Pay because it’s the same thing for them. The essence of Apple Pay is to keep your card details private and it’s happening because iPhone is not transmitting your actual card number but so-called Device Only Account Number, which is a token of your card. Each token have different number and you can check it on a slip - card number given to merchant is not the same as your physical card number. Tokens are generated by card companies (Visa, Mastercard) and keep the same format as physical cards. That’s just how it works, even in U. S. you will see “Visa” or “Mastercard” on a payment slip, not “Apple Pay”. Second, payments on websites are routed via payment gateways like eService, Polskie ePłatności etc. and most of them support Apple Pay when you choose payment via debit/credit card.

Walmart has their own proprietary payment system (Walmart Pay) which they've invested heavily into, hence why they refuse to adopt Apple Pay in the States (their largest market). They started accepting Apple Pay in Canada in 2020, and ASDA Walmart here in the UK also accepts Apple Pay.
@BlackPinnz

Another note to add to this video is that Apple Pay actually uses a device based card number that is a barrier between the merchant and your actual card details. So, even if it is compromised the thieves will only get a number for the devices “card” number and not your actual card number. Further minimizing this. You can see this when you see your receipt, the last 4 digits are different than on your card. Instead you have to go to the wallet settings whichever device you used to make the purchase to see the number used there. The one downside is when doing returns, to verify the card number requires a few more steps and remembering which device you used if at a POS. The Apple Watch and iPhone both have different numbers which I learned once after 30min at the LCBO.

When I went to America, I realised that one swiping your card is a thing and people do that more than they use contactless and also it’s somewhat common for you to go to a restaurant and the waiter walks away with your card which would never happen here. The only times I need my physical card is if I need to get cash out.

I think, the biggest part is, that Apple Pay is not using the credit card number and is locked when not in use. Otherwise the card issuers would need different attempts on the design. Some time ago, the standard was to have name, expiration and card number on front and CVV on the back. So you needed to switch the card. American Express even had all information on the front. But since some years the cards are redesigned to a vertical design, having a blank front and all information on the back… So I guess, they don’t want to eliminate that risk (because I also know no bank, that really is providing one-use-cards) and Apple Pay is only providing security against those tapping thefts, using a card terminal to get card data via RFID/NFC, and the comfort of paying without PIN or signature. And the best is: in Germany I can ask, if I can pay with credit card (some don’t accept any cards, a really small number accepts only “Girocard” or “EC”, a German exclusive card linked to the bank account directly) and when I can pay with credit card, Apple Pay is working, even when some cashiers say, they don’t accept payment by smartphone or by Watch.

Here, worst case they hand you the POS machine which is usually wireless, or move it closer so you can reach it. Here in Portugal we have something called MBWay which is supported by all banks and terminals so that besides being able to pay with our debit/credit card (either by inserting the card into the machine or by NFC) we can also use our phone's NFC or scan a QR code to make the payment. Another cool thing is that we can also create "virtual" cards with a specific amount and use the numbers of that card to make online payments, or, if the website supports it, we can enter our phone number and we receive a notification to authorize the payment. This means that we don't actually need to have a physical card which is kinda cool

That’s where the US is straggling behind. Apple Pay in Canada works everywhere where Interact Contactless Payments work. Even in chip tech, the integration forever, Canada got chipped cards 2008, and the US 2015… when apple introduced Apple Pay, almost all terminals in Canada could already accept them since contactless was already mainstream it just needed to be implemented. And when it got released adoption was quick

A little correction: A company does not store any payment data like credit card numbers, etc., as it is illegal to store that information. Only the payment provider can store such data. The company from which you are making a purchase only stores the last 4 digits of the credit card number and the expiration date.

Also, I’ve lived in 4 different states and out of my entire life of handing credit cards at restaurants to people or over the phone (which is also very rare), I have never once been charged incorrectly lol. To be honest I wonder why USA is so behind ages when it comes to card payments and bakning systems. Many banks here either ship payment cards without magnetic strip or if present then that strip is blocked by default because it is considered rather as security threat. Since 2013 when I reached legal age to have own bank account and payment card I actually never paid using magnetic strip. Even places where you need to enter some areas like indoor ATMs rather have NFC reader instead of magnetic stirp reader. While contactless cards can be abused, there is logic, that PIN is required when 1.) Your payment exceeds 500 CZK (about 20 - 25 USD) 2.) After certain PINless payments or randomly you have to type PIN regardless of the paid ammount, even few CZK (few USD cents) Contactless payments are in Czech Republic well known and in 99 % of cases where card payments are accepted, you can pay also contactless. On some places only contactless payments are accepted like for instance in public transport ticket selling machines. So besides mobile payment solutions like Google Pay / Apple Pay / Garmin Pay, etc. you do not need any third party apps like PayPal to pay your bills. You need either card or banking account to carry direct bank to bank transfer (for instance when your mobile phone plan, energy bills, insurance fees, etc.)

There’s an nfc (near field communication) at the top of your phone. Assuming you have Apple Pay set up, (if you don’t you can look it up, it’s simple) you can hover the top of your phone over the card reader while you’re in the Apple Pay screen. The easiest way to go to the pay screen is to either double click the home button or power button while you’re in your Lock Screen or Notification Center. I’m not entirely sure but if you go in your card app and click the card you want to pay with, I think that should work too but I’m not sure.

Well, I don‘t think Apple wants somebody to know how it works exactly, as this improves the risk of finding exploits. So this is a solution how I think it might work: As you heard in the video, the card information is stored encrypted on your phone. If you enable Apple Pay your phone sends your device-account-id and a security code to the payment terminal, which checks if the security-code is valid. If so, the terminal sends back a token which includes data like where the terminal is at and how much it costs. Your phone then processes the payment from your card to the retailer and sends back the status and the payment-id to the terminal. IMPORTANT: As I said before these are just my thoughts on how it works. The only information that Apple provides on how it works is, that your phone sends some codes to the reader, that identify your account and the processes the payment to the retailer on your phone.

Your video is wrong at 1:33. The chip built into cards cannot be skimmed because it does exactly what the apple pay does: It transmits a one time use code, so the real number is never revealed. It's done by powering up the credit card like a computer, using the contacts on the card, and then the card is able to generate information.
@miketech79

I think credit card companies need to finally ditch the mag-strip. At some point need to cut off the ease that goes with skimming that mag-strip. I think a full video explaining the difference between NFC physical cards (tap and go cards) and Apple Pay would be good too. As I guess the security of NFC physical cards is pretty weak and perhaps worse or just as bad as the mag-strip.
@joermnyc

I think it’s still there for old payment terminals at mass transit kiosks (the metrocard machines here in NYC are so dated it’s ridiculous, they are very slowly rolling out a new tap and ride card, but it does not offer the monthly option that I use (and their excuse that OMNY has free rides after 12 rides per week (Monday through Sunday) does not work, since I rarely ride more than 10 times a week, and never go over 12 a week!)
@miketech79
@miketech79 Жыл бұрын
@@joermnyc the card companies mandated that if the vendor chooses to use mag-strip cards that the vendor is liable for the loss during an data breach. I’m not sure if that is enforced enough. That was the reason why vendors switched to the chip card system. So the NY metro transit system should be held liable for any fraud if breaches occur. Eventually the big 3 (visa, mc, and amex) will say that the mag-strip isn’t allowed anymore. I hope that comes soon!

@Junispro31 Жыл бұрын
NFC tap to pay chips are encrypted and significantly harder to Copy compared to Magnetic Stripe. However, advantages of mobile payments is the fact that you add another quick layer of authentication before you tap and pay. Also, your real card info is never provided to consumers on Mobile Payment platforms.
