To be fair, Apple's hardware is most often very high quality and their OS is optimized along with it, so when purchasing their device it is more of an investment you expect to pay off over years. I had a 2009 iMac that lasted me until 2017 and I gave that away when I started switching more towards the 2016 Macbook & Macbook Pro that I am still heavily using to this day (will get the M series to replace them soon) I had a 2014 Macbook Pro base model that I accidently spilled water on that seeped into the board...the machine lasted me until 2017 when I gave it away to relatives as I was already on the new 2016 Macbooks I still have a working iPhone 3G, and my iPhone 7 Plus last me until 2020 when the screen finally stopped working after hundreds of cracks and drops over the years. Still have an Apple Watch Gen 2. Still have a 2013 Apple TV (which admittedly haven't used in 3 years)

I think you might be mixing launch pricing policy with discount policy. What you’re talking about here is how they have spiked their price over the years, but that’s something that other companies have been doing too. In fact, the first major smartphone that crossed the psychological line of what would you pay for a smartphone was the galaxy s8. Both companies noticed saturation so they resorted to shifting the market by increasing hardware features and price to increase margins. Besides, we’ve seen Apple being more aggressive with their pricing and lowering it some years. The main difference with their competitors is that you can’t expect to buy a 11 month old Apple product cheaper than at launch. By contrast, you can easily get a +200 bucks discount for a 5 month old Samsung flagship. My own guess is that Apple doesn’t want to devalue their products, since once many consumers realize that older devices get discounts, they decide to wait a bit and get them cheaper. That’s what I do with my android smartphones. So, if you want an Apple know that you’ll pay pretty much the same during launch date or just before the newer model appears. I assume that this may cause sudden spikes of sales at launch, and much lower sales on the later months, since buyers will pay full price for a product that will be renewed shortly. But I guess they’d be probably ok with this. Another company that does that is Nintendo, which is infamous for selling 4 yo games at full price, unlike other publishers. Both companies have very strong loyal fan bases so I guess this could help.

07:40 wow that is such a bold statement to say with such confidence! the services market is growing exponentially and there are even bigger profit margins there. with the Indian market becoming more and more attractive and so many potential customers on the lower end we might see sooner than later and iPhone mini for example because the hardware sales is not a sustainable model it can reach saturation and it’s not a recurring sale. Especially that iPhones are getting better and better and people are less likely to upgrade like before. They might risk a short term reduction of revenue which investors will understand in order to have more revenue on the long term. IPhone is dying because it’s gotten so good and robust that they ran out of upgrades (other than cameras and more speed that’s not needed by most users)
@jmiquelmb3 жыл бұрын
Cook has been putting a lot of effort to make money on services, in fact. But I think it’s important to understand that if your service business is based on purchases and subscriptions rather than ads, it’s important to get the right kind of consumer. IOS users spend way more on app purchases than the average android user. That’s the one the kind of costumer they want. So yeah, they could sell you a 200 bucks phone, but they’d be cannibalizing their sales and not get much from services, since people who spend 200$ on a phone aren’t probably going to get Apple TV+, Apple Music and the likes.

See, a $100 jump in price tag for this item even though it is "MADE IN INDIA" (written on the package itself). Anyway, it bought in Flipkart Big Billion Days which gave me discounted price at $499 for 128gb (which should be before the discounted price tag), it's a nice decent phone. Happy customer !! What a irony, we have to assume we got lucky because of discount, where all they did is sold the product for the original price.

When they introduced the X alongside the 8, opinions were that it was a stupid idea as the X's sales will cannibalise the 8 because of the new hardware and a full screen phone. Now that you mentioned it I though it was actually a smart move to introduce the X as a "higher end" product and raise the price over $1000, and then keep the price there for all the upcoming "Pro" model they sell. It was a subtle way to get consumers to adapt to the higher price point instead of "We are raising the phone price to over $1000 this year", that's obviously very hard to swallow.

@18Me103 жыл бұрын
I'm not convinced by your analysis. You say they'd never lower the price of the iPhone after the X in 2017 which went for 1000$ to retain profit margins, yet the year after they released a 749$ iPhone Xr and after that a 699$ iPhone 11. Last year, they dropped a 399$ iPhone. Those phones combined consist of the vast majority of their sales. And it is very obvious that Apple tries to extend the longevity of their devices and incentivises people to hold on to their iPhones: 5+ year software support, old iPhones run still very smoothly even after 4-5 years, very aggressive battery health management. Hence I am not convinced that their main goal at this point are hardware sales. If that were truly the case, they would go the android route which is try to bring the most bleeding edge tech but make phones obsolete or outdated just a few months after release, hoping customers upgrade more frequently. Apple tries to create the image that their phones are very robust and people who care about device longevity will buy iPhone again, and second, the longer people use an iPhone, the more likely they are to get locked in the ecosystem, buy an iPad/Mac/Watch/TV and spend money on the Appstore and on iCould. So basically, I don't think this video truly explains what is going on here
