But that is just my opinion, I've had iPhone 3G on release, in about 2 months 1 drop of water killed my phone. The thing is even nice Androids break so easily I stopped buying nice ones and just got budget phones instead until AT&T ruined my service so horribly I had to switch to Verizon. That's why I was disappointed when Google priced the Pixel phones at $649 and $749. They're not in the position to price it that high. When I moved to the U.S., I looked for a used Pixel 2, and found one in mint condition for $130. That was a good deal considering how well it still works in 2020. It's great that Google sells the Pixel 3a and 4a at $349, they now know their position in the market. A great value.

I think you might be mixing launch pricing policy with discount policy. What you’re talking about here is how they have spiked their price over the years, but that’s something that other companies have been doing too. In fact, the first major smartphone that crossed the psychological line of what would you pay for a smartphone was the galaxy s8. Both companies noticed saturation so they resorted to shifting the market by increasing hardware features and price to increase margins. Besides, we’ve seen Apple being more aggressive with their pricing and lowering it some years. The main difference with their competitors is that you can’t expect to buy a 11 month old Apple product cheaper than at launch. By contrast, you can easily get a +200 bucks discount for a 5 month old Samsung flagship. My own guess is that Apple doesn’t want to devalue their products, since once many consumers realize that older devices get discounts, they decide to wait a bit and get them cheaper. That’s what I do with my android smartphones. So, if you want an Apple know that you’ll pay pretty much the same during launch date or just before the newer model appears. I assume that this may cause sudden spikes of sales at launch, and much lower sales on the later months, since buyers will pay full price for a product that will be renewed shortly. But I guess they’d be probably ok with this. Another company that does that is Nintendo, which is infamous for selling 4 yo games at full price, unlike other publishers. Both companies have very strong loyal fan bases so I guess this could help.

@@gokultn72 Yes, but you'll never see iphones discounted before a new model launches. Of course they must lower the price of an iPhone 13 or else nobody would buy it if it was the same price as the 15. While androids often lower their price merely months after launch. I do think that buying a previous gen iPhone is a better deal I agree with you

To be fair, Apple's hardware is most often very high quality and their OS is optimized along with it, so when purchasing their device it is more of an investment you expect to pay off over years. I had a 2009 iMac that lasted me until 2017 and I gave that away when I started switching more towards the 2016 Macbook & Macbook Pro that I am still heavily using to this day (will get the M series to replace them soon) I had a 2014 Macbook Pro base model that I accidently spilled water on that seeped into the board...the machine lasted me until 2017 when I gave it away to relatives as I was already on the new 2016 Macbooks I still have a working iPhone 3G, and my iPhone 7 Plus last me until 2020 when the screen finally stopped working after hundreds of cracks and drops over the years. Still have an Apple Watch Gen 2. Still have a 2013 Apple TV (which admittedly haven't used in 3 years)

@@jmiquelmb 2 years late and I just want to add some points, apple use its dominance to make even hard to anything but they products to exist, they stated by making the younger population of developed countries think you aren't cool if you use anything than they products (in poor countries they just sell then as the brand of riches), after that by being extremely closed in they own ecosystem they made that people indirectly force they social circle to move to apple too or you can't have a good social interaction online (ex: USA blue vs green bubble), that with the fact USA "banned" chinese phones from the west (US x China sanctions did hurt chinese brands a lot) and Samsung trying everything to look like a worse iPhone, they took control over most people under 30yo around the world and now they are just like windows on PC, unless they do something really insanely bad they will sit at top for a really long time, maybe they will never fall. obs: not saying they products are bad, but point out that performance is kind irrelevant for why they dominated the world.

Not only carriers, even the Apple Store offers discounts for older models, and payment plans. They even show the renewed pricing of their entire lineup during their keynotes. If you do some research you’ll see that most of the times they offer phones from 400 to 1200 bucks, reaching a wide costumer base. That’s their price policy to reach different consumer profiles. What they refuse to do is to lower their prices more than once a year. I assume they want to keep a consistent price to avoid devaluing their products too much.
@kentinmorgan
@kentinmorgan 3 жыл бұрын
An additional reason I can think of is that psychologically, when an item is discounted, its value diminishes in the mind of the potential customer. And Apple would never diminishes the value of their products. That’s why the prices tags, in the Apple stores are always very discreet, that is in order to not make the price a selling point. The luxury industry uses the same price tags format if you ever notice

They can still sell the highest end $1,000 iPhones with their Pro models - have average customers get flagship power in the middle at $700 - $800 for the regular iPhones - and for the budget entry is the SE at an affordable $399.

Things change when it comes to India. It's hard to get customers in this country. Even Amazon had to come up with 'Pay on Delivery' model to compete. Recently, iPhone went on sale for upto 30% price cut. While Apple didn't do it officially on their website but they offered free Airpods with iPhone purchase. Similarly they offered cashback on loading money to Apple pay. Strange for a company like Apple to do this marketing tricks. But results are here as well. Apple India saw 70% YoY growth in revenue than last year.

I pay cash for my iPhone every year. I wait for the release and then in December I sell my old iPhone like the iPhone 11 for about $500-$550 and then just pay the difference which by December you can go to Swappa and buy the iPhone 12 for about $600-$650 so I only have to add $100.00 and that's better than making the idiotic monthly payments.

See, a $100 jump in price tag for this item even though it is "MADE IN INDIA" (written on the package itself). Anyway, it bought in Flipkart Big Billion Days which gave me discounted price at $499 for 128gb (which should be before the discounted price tag), it's a nice decent phone. Happy customer !! What a irony, we have to assume we got lucky because of discount, where all they did is sold the product for the original price.

When they introduced the X alongside the 8, opinions were that it was a stupid idea as the X's sales will cannibalise the 8 because of the new hardware and a full screen phone. Now that you mentioned it I though it was actually a smart move to introduce the X as a "higher end" product and raise the price over $1000, and then keep the price there for all the upcoming "Pro" model they sell. It was a subtle way to get consumers to adapt to the higher price point instead of "We are raising the phone price to over $1000 this year", that's obviously very hard to swallow.

@18Me10
@18Me10 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not convinced by your analysis. You say they'd never lower the price of the iPhone after the X in 2017 which went for 1000$ to retain profit margins, yet the year after they released a 749$ iPhone Xr and after that a 699$ iPhone 11. Last year, they dropped a 399$ iPhone. Those phones combined consist of the vast majority of their sales. And it is very obvious that Apple tries to extend the longevity of their devices and incentivises people to hold on to their iPhones: 5+ year software support, old iPhones run still very smoothly even after 4-5 years, very aggressive battery health management. Hence I am not convinced that their main goal at this point are hardware sales. If that were truly the case, they would go the android route which is try to bring the most bleeding edge tech but make phones obsolete or outdated just a few months after release, hoping customers upgrade more frequently. Apple tries to create the image that their phones are very robust and people who care about device longevity will buy iPhone again, and second, the longer people use an iPhone, the more likely they are to get locked in the ecosystem, buy an iPad/Mac/Watch/TV and spend money on the Appstore and on iCould. So basically, I don't think this video truly explains what is going on here

07:40 wow that is such a bold statement to say with such confidence! the services market is growing exponentially and there are even bigger profit margins there. with the Indian market becoming more and more attractive and so many potential customers on the lower end we might see sooner than later and iPhone mini for example because the hardware sales is not a sustainable model it can reach saturation and it’s not a recurring sale. Especially that iPhones are getting better and better and people are less likely to upgrade like before. They might risk a short term reduction of revenue which investors will understand in order to have more revenue on the long term. IPhone is dying because it’s gotten so good and robust that they ran out of upgrades (other than cameras and more speed that’s not needed by most users)

Cook has been putting a lot of effort to make money on services, in fact. But I think it’s important to understand that if your service business is based on purchases and subscriptions rather than ads, it’s important to get the right kind of consumer. IOS users spend way more on app purchases than the average android user. That’s the one the kind of costumer they want. So yeah, they could sell you a 200 bucks phone, but they’d be cannibalizing their sales and not get much from services, since people who spend 200$ on a phone aren’t probably going to get Apple TV+, Apple Music and the likes.

What I think they should do is at least offer one of their phone models at a lower price. That way more people can afford an IPhone and they can still maintain the prices of their higher priced phones whiles gaining more Apple users. Plus I’m sure once a user of the lower cost Apple gets a chance to use an IPhone they might be willing to pay the extra cost for the higher priced IPhone, IPad, or any of the many other Apple products. I know because that’s what I did. I couldn’t afford an IPhone so I bought an IPad first, loved it so much that I bought the phone, pencil, and other Apple accessories. That makes much more business sense for the growth and profit of the company in the long run. Loyal, devoted consumers are what’s important to a business.
