Why I left the Amish
• Why I Left the Amish
Welcome to The Amish Potato’s Channel. My name is Cj Miller. I was raised Amish in Shipshewana, IN. I was Amish until I was 16 years old, when I started dressing “English”, drove a car and partied on the weekends. This is called Rumspringa.
I did this until I was in my late twenties. I then briefly joined the amish church, left again, and moved to Idaho where I discovered the truth of who Christ is, married my lovely wife and am now sharing my story on KZbin.
Thank you for watching and enjoy!

The day I saw that video changed my life. We abandoned our long term plans for RVing around the country and began to unwind all of our RV investments. Sold off the camping community property and sold the Jayco, Still have slide in camper and a dually we had planned to haul a 5th wheel with. Compared to a quality 40+' boat the construction of RVs are trash.

Hi CJ - We own a nine year old Jayco fifth wheel and love it. We have never had any problems with it and have driven it multiple times on trips from Washington state to Florida and everywhere in between. The owners need to take some responsibility too. We take good care of ours, store it in a covered garage and maintain it according to the usual recommendations. We have had people comment that they think it is new. We had a Jayco trailer before and have always been very happy with their products.

Absolutely true on the customer/owner being responsible for the care of their RV...we used to (not camping now) watch RVs pulling into the parks that were filthy, duct taped and in general, not well cared for. We were just surprised that people just didn't care.

E&S is fake EVIL Amish and way to expensive!!! Jay chupp is a liar and scammer. I would never do business with him or any of his family or other shops of you paid me too!! Go to forks Dow. The road, they also have one in Middlebury and dented can in Goshen on 119. At the blue gate theater if coming from 20, take a left and head on down to Middlebury. Stop at rise and shine another Amish discount store but mainly for appliances, toys, furniture and things of that sort. Stop at Dutch country as well for honey and things. And the other forks is right around the corner from there. Their prices are cheaper then E&S and nicer people.

Got a Rockwood Geo Pro which is built in Millersburg. I think that is a heavily Amish plant. The quality is decent for the price. You can buy better units like airstream but you pay airstream prices. One thing I like about Rockwood is they tend to learn and fix problems. My cabinets are not the best but they changed that in 2023 units to a solid wood better cabinet. I got a better floor then the units the year before. I also like the fact they did not massively increase production during the pandemic. They just made you wait a long time to get one. Your right, the longer someone works in those plants the better they get or they get out just like anything you work at continually.

There is a Jayco assembly line video at least ten years old that shows the workers literally running to slap the trailers together. This probably recurred when the 2020 buying frenzy started to meet demand. Locally formerly empty RV lots are now full of units.

The birdseed and animal feed business I drive for is Amish and English owned but the shop is all Amish. It is also a well oiled machine when it comes to both producing and delivery. Ship 1.2 millions pounds of just birdseed a week. They get thirty 48' trailers bagged, put on pallets, wrapped and shipped in basically two days and all the drivers are gone on either Monday or Tuesday for delivery across the U.S. They work as hard as any group of people I've seen.

I sold RV’s for 3 months and then stopped. I had a hard time selling such poor quality product and then having to finance someone for 15-20 years when the product would probably not make it to 5 years. When the product would get driven from the US to our dealership in Canada it was not unusual to find moldings and panels on the ground because they are simply stapled not glued and screwed.

I worked at improving the quality of mobile homes back in the 1970's There were many Amish workers in the plants in Indiana. The workers could impact the build quality, but only to a degree. The materials and design were far bigger factors. After working on those for a bit over a year, our small team from the Research Labs, improved quality, reduced warrantee costs, and reduced overall price by properly using materials in good designs. Once the workers saw how much better a product could be built they also paid greater attention to their contributions to the plant. I now am retired and travel full time. I found a good RV for me. Open Range when the founder Randy Gruber was still sole owner. With the exception of the poor frame work by Lippert, the only frame manufacturer, I have fixed everything else myself. On the road for 12 and a 1/2 years beating that poor RV like a rented mule and it is still going.

1st hand experience.. Bought a Jayco JayFeather on Sept. 20th and have found many craftsmanship issues, few manufacturers issues also. I was stoked to find out these units are built by the Amish community and told Josh the rv nerd at Bish’s, how stoked I was and he told me “the Amish are just like every other “worker” out there” Then my belief that I was getting a “solid” unit sank. Since the newness has worn off and I started to look at every nut, bolt and screw on this unit, I’ve found missing screws and bolts not tightened. Things not aligned properly, again some of these are manufacturing issues. Not a Amish craftsmanship issue, I’m not sure about whom does Jayco Quality Control prior a unit leaving and signing off on it. But they need to be replaced. Since then I found out Amish get paid by the Unit and not by the hour, which results in them doing these units as fast as the can, it’s a Jayco QC issue and not a Amish issue. I should have been more picky at delivery and that’s on me. The Dealership and Jayco QC have lost most of my trust and a little lost to the Amish. Just yesterday after fixing a issue I said to my wife “I thought I bought a Jayco and NOT a FORD” (Fix Or Repair Daily) 😂😂

The problem with a new RV is that it's not 'shaken out' yet.... The first few years of a RV.... especially Class A.... can spend the majority of their first few years in the shop getting warranty work performed. It might be better to buy something a few years old. I was in the industry for about 8 years and we toured the plants in Indiana. It's shocking how fast they work. I couldn't imagine doing that all day. They get good at their task because it's an assembly line so they repeat the same thing day in and day out.

You are right about the breaking-in time...a good run down the road and a weekend camping trip helps find the problems...we have owned three 5th wheelers and one pop-up trailer, and everyone of them had minor issues at least twice each...I think that is a great average for repair work.

They didn't take care of my horse that I was paying them to train to pull a buggy and ride. They put my horse in a field that they knew part of the fence was down. She got out and they never told me she was gone. I came to check on her and found out she had been lost in the woods for over a week. They didn't look for her. When I found out I brought my other horses and family and we searched for her. Her leg had been cut open on the downed fencing a week earlier and was infected. They wouldn't help find her or doctor her because it was Sunday. So I ended up with a hurt horse and no training done. I have seen Amish horses at auctions with terrible feet, sores, abscess, backs. It seems like some work them till they drop then sale them. I think they think of horses as a tool where I think of my horses as a partner and member of our family.

I always tell people these rvs aren't made to be lived in 24/7 or driving down the road ever single week but some people do and that's why they fall apart. If you use it as a recreational vehicle several times out of the year it would last a little longer. Yes the quality of materials are bad to keep cost down and also to keep weight down. When you take a rv down the road doing 70 mph and hitting bumps it's like going through a hurricane and earthquake at the same time. What house could survive that every week.

Watched your vid and mostly agree, allot of folks that have experienced bad quality RV’s would agree and disagree with your assessment, agree in that the company dictates how they are constructed and that is out of an Amish laborers hands, but disagree on the front of trim staples shot into trim not straight or missing the trim all together, screws not in all the way or in crooked and missing contact with the sub surface or not making contact at all, lap sealant not applied straight and not in the groove, wiring nuts and connectors barely crimped and easily pulled apart with road shaking. Seems like that is definitely a “person” issue. Just giving this the entire look is all.

Very few products are high quality. Most are built to be merely adequate with a decent lifespan to give the perception of quality. Case in point-5mm Ecuadorian low cost plywood or worse, pressboard or MDF, rather than 3/8” A-B plywood from Georgia-Pacific. Or in your car. Molded plastic produced for pennies rather than die-pressed sheet metal. And we delude ourselves that merely reliable/functional equates to quality. Look at any Glock.

Once you get into mass production and repetitive assembly line produced products where speed is the driving force.... quality always suffers. You would think standardization would make things better... but imagine doing the same crap over and over... at some point you just don't care much. Quality control inspection during the process and with the final product is where the real issue is.

@@oldschooldiy3240 I will agree that a private company has made up some guidelines and provides what they call a certification but there are no national standards to measure an RV by except through the industry. There is nothing similar to a nationally developed building code. As for using a 'home inspector - most of the time they cannot tell the difference between a manufactured home and a site built one. They would be trying to apply the building codes to RV's. A true building inspector would look for compliance with a legal code which no RV could meet.

Amish are great at some things. Mostly woodworking in the traditional manner. Other things... Not so much. I've lived in the middle and of an Amish community, middlefield ohio.. I've seen barns held up by a single main post. It creeped me out.

I own an “Amish-built” RV and I can say while the choices of materials is superior, the craftsman left a lot to be desired. The company really leans heavily into the Amish lore to sell RVs. At the end of the day horrible quality comes from all over the place. My Chinese-made iPhones have been rock solid. My American-made RV not so much. We need to quit patting ourselves on the back by assuming “Made in the USA” means something in terms of quality. It doesn’t.

Makes sense to me. You can only put together the materials you are given. You can have an RV that is very well put together but uses cheap materials. You can have an RV built shoddy with cheap materials. You can have an RV that is built poorly with premium materials. So just shop around and buy what you can afford. Just get a tent. It will save you money and you can build it yourself every time you go out camping 🤣.

My sister is making a payment on a camper trailer that leaked and grew so much mold inside it that it made her whole family sick. Because they stored it outside in the Wisconsin winter their insurance company didnotcover it. So sad for her and her family as they are out of a camper and out of a ton of money. The poor craftsmanship I think is to blame. Not a Wisconsin winter that wasn’t even harsh, with only light snow.

If don't have covered storage in a winter climate it is murder on an RV. This is something the salesmen will probably never tell you as covered storage is expensive when you can even find it.

My home was belt by Amish wood workers, and I seen them use air nailers for the first time, horrible site. Some 2x4’s had 10- 15 nails and splitting the boards. Some boards were sistered with two short boards with another short board nailed over them, poor craftsmanship.

I somewhat disagree with not increased quality when slowing down, I repair RV’s and also run a shop that builds oil delivery trucks. While we are not the fastest at a 2 week turnaround per truck with 5 guys in a small shop. I’d put our trucks against any out there, when repairing RV’s it’s simple things like securing wires, missing screws, wires not properly stripped/crimped, Misaligned cabinets, missing hardware, different hardware, shoddy electrical connections. That in itself has nothing to do with material quality but workmanship. Before buying my own RV it took me months of looking at the same model side by side with others and none were the same. When you’re running around you can’t pay attention to what you’re doing.

Yes slower might not improve all quality but it will help not finding misplaced screws and nails! My previous Camper was built just before COVID a Winibago it started falling apart on the first trip because Nails around the slides were not right or missed the spot completely! Screws all over cabinetry we're stripped or missing a kitchen cabinet fell! A door fell off. Slowing down will help drastically and should not increase cost because they will have less warranty work. Creating a loyal customer base, but corporate greed prevents this their logic is so flawed!

I can see that same work ethic of the few Amish we have around here (middle TN). The "English" that work in these Amish factories work as hard as the Amish because the Amish set the pace. In the other non-Amish factories, it's probably like most other plants, almost everybody is trying to just do enough work to not get fired. The American society as a whole are a bunch of lazy entitled idiots, aside from groups like the Amish, some foreigners, and there are still a few hard working regular folks around.

Lived around the Amish all my 56 yrs here in Southern IN. Home of Graber Post Buildings. Ive seen the change from generation to generation. Amish quality used to mean something back in the 70s and into the 80s. Ive seen a steady decline in the workmanship in about everything. Even doing business in general has changed. Thats not to say the "English" havent back slided, but the "Amish built" reputation is slowing becoming less and less around here. As with everything in life, time and pressure change everything.

With the exception of a few very high end builders RV's built after the collapse of 2008 are junk. Better off buying a used pre 2008 unit and upgrading or repairing any issues. And don't fall for the Amish quality or high moral fiber scam. They compromise when money is involved, e.g. the massive number of puppy mills they run in PA and the midwest. NY state ran them out years ago and they spread into other states. Also we have an Amish market near me and they have a wine vendor onsite and have no qualms about vehicles and electronics being used if it makes money.

Hey, so I noticed something in one of your videos that I wanted to ask about. In one of your videos (I forgot which one, been binge watching them lol) you mentioned that the Amish go to the hospital when they are sick Why is it that they shun most forms of modern technology, but when it comes to healthcare, they see nothing wrong with modern medicine and technology? I remember you mentioned that they don't want to use modern technology because it's not the way God intended for us to use the earth, but doesn't using modern medicine go against that belief?

The Amish around here don’t have a problem with modern technology. They just choose to not use it in their lives unless they have to. Modern medicine is a must in order to stay alive sometimes
