Welcome to The Amish Potato’s Channel. My name is Cj Miller. I was raised Amish in Shipshewana, IN. I was Amish until I was 16 years old, when I started dressing “English”, drove a car and partied on the weekends. This is called Rumspringa.
I did this until I was in my late twenties. I then briefly joined the amish church, left again, and moved to Idaho where I discovered the truth of who Christ is, married my lovely wife and am now sharing my story on KZbin.

The Amish build the best furniture in the world and its not stupid expensive. The Indiana RV's are not good though, nor do they make 60-100K on the line. Look up Jayco or forest river on indeed and read employee reviews. Those plants will hire any joker that shows up. When buying a new RV, the dealer gives you a paper to write down all the issues and bring it back for repair, most issues within a month will be 30+. Propane lines run through suspension, screws drilled through wiring, front caps held on by 3 wood screws (Jayco quality video). They are horrid quality.

I live in Ohio very near Amish areas. We have used the Amish for roofing and decking and I see how fast they work. But I can appreciate your insight into “fast doesn’t always equal quality”. We are please with their work in general but if all humans worked as hard with the ethics, many more Americans would be successful. Great video.

I had my barn built by an Amish crew. 3 guys and a 15-year-old girl. That girl could outwork MOST 25-year-old men I have seen. Great work...no complaining...quality always...if I was unhappy with any small thing they fixed it immediately. I am in North Ohio Love these folks

The RV boom was because people live in them. My campground went from about 200 spots to almost 500…. And it’s all monthly rental expansion. Over 250 monthly spots and the wait to get one is over a year!

Thanks for this-My 2012 Little Guy teardrop was built by the Amish and it has been the best for Years! It held up to the test of time and I have never had a leak or any problem. Mine was built in Ohio and glad to see some well deserved credit given for the work they do.

I was born in Elkhart Indiana I used to be an, “RV RAT!!!” Anything Recreational Vehicle, Elkhart, IN was the R.V.I.A. The Birth Place of the very first travel trailer built bought & sold to Gypsy’s !! I’ve done a whole lot of work in several Van/RV shops!! Sidewall’s, floors, final finish, quality control, paint/RV, & so on & so on!!! WOW bringing back memories!!! Back in the day the work was called, “PEACE RATE” the money was great!!!!!! The only department I’ve never worked in was the wood department & that’s because the Amazing Amish Peeps were & are the Master Wood Workers!!! Late 70’ & 80’s MANY MANY of them rode to work horse & buggy, hitching post outside, STARCRAFT IND Goshen IN … damn, them was the good days, Good Memories!!! Anyways I could go on & on! So basically they still run the same!!! “”balls to the walls!! Keep the line moving!!!!!””

I worked next to a place that was having a metal building put up by a dad and two sons that I believe were Mennonite’s. We were amazed that they never looked rushed however the speed that that building was assembled and finished blew everyone’s mind at work.

I have watched the Amish from Idaho build a long cabin and each person has their JOB and they do it fast, if there is an issue with the logs or fitting the logs the to Top guys on the team both look at the problem and fix it everyone else continues doing their job. and they all do a very good job. they take a lunch break at the same time and the wives are there to serve the food, the kids also do their part None of them sit around and do nothing.

As a 5 generation dairy farm family in Wisconsin the first 18 years of my life we all worked together no one sat around and 16 hour days were normal longer during school and we were not Amish nor Mennonite

Gray wolf is 99% amish...my son was one of maybe 4-5 . That weren't. This is an RV I would own...they don't even have a crew at the end of the line to fix mistakes. Because they do it right

I been an HR professional in manufacturing for 25 years and I would LOVE to work for one of these Amish RV facilities. I would imagine there are very few to zero employee relationships issues and no attendance issues!

@@randall1959 Well, people have different opinions on testing for pot, but 80% of your failed applications were likely a result of that, and its a very stupid and dated policy to not hire people because they smoke pot, at least IMO. I smoke and my last job didnt screen for pot. I worked at Keystone. I am a HARD worker and I get stuff done. If companies want good workers, they are going to have to get over stuff. Cigarette smokers are worse for a company in every regard than a pot smoker, yet no discrimination there, that disgusting habit is allowed to thrive in most work environments, whether the non smokers like it or not.

We spent a week in RV country in 2018 when we had to take our Jayco 5th wheel (Eagle Premier, precursor to North Point) in to Lippert so they could rebuild the Schwintek slide. We toured the RV museum and loved it, also toured a Jayco factory. We saw all the Amish bicycling to work and back. We visited an RV Park that hosted an antique RV rally and I loved checking out the vintage RV's. We also took in a popular flea market near Napanee I think. Didn't see that donut place you were talking about but we rally enjoyed our visit!

I spent 8 years in the cargo trailer business in the 90s in Elkhart Co. Still live in the area. You are not kidding about fast paced and great pay. It's not for everyone. We would have young kids come in weekly and try it and give up really quick. Most don't make it long. The ones that do, are die hard workers. Your description is spot on!

I've been in that area quite a few times, actually. I used to drive an Amish fella from north-central Michigan to Shipshewanna every week for a medical treatment. We would be there for 2 to 3 days depending on the schedule. I loved driving Amish families around, and I learned a lot about their lifestyles and loved their community's. That area of Lagrange county Indiana was pretty cool, and I loved taking the tour of the MH Hall of Fame, and such. I agree about the money situation of the Amish. I was a bit surprised to watch the "modernization" of the local Amish community as was the Amish fella that I was bringing down week by week. Great video, thanks for sharing!

Back in the 80's I worked state fairs and craft shows. I made wood toys. Every July we worked Kutztown amish folk festival. Now I am not amish. But anyways we had a lot of fun working this festival

I live in southern Manitoba where my Mennonite ancestors settled. The Mennonites are similar in the way that many who had little education are incredibly wealthy entrepreneurs. Our little city has often ranked highly across Canada for entrepreneurship. It really is a hardworking drive.

I've been to many of the areas in upper Indiana. We owned a Jayco and had an issue which could only be fixed at the factory repair shop. I really liked that 5th wheel and it's warranty. It was a company that backed their product. We retired from camping, though I do miss it tremendously. I went to the Essenhaus for their famous chicken dinner and took home goodies from the bakery. I also visited your hometown of Shipshewana..took home some yummy treats and talked to many Amish shop keepers. I enjoyed my time in Indiana and will visit again. I hope things and the economy get better for the Amish, but realistically, it will get worse for everyone. Thanks CJ for the tour and local information. Blessings to you and your family 🌻

@@homegrown1015 this is very true. In Arizona we have had some of the largest rent and home price increases in the country and many young families are buying RV's instead. The problem is there aren't enough parks for them if they are under 55.

Powdered Sugar on a donut reminds me of my wife's love from childhood in Louisiana of Benyets (sic). Which I have made for her but do to health concerns for us both it is now a Christmas Yule Tide treat. It would seem that a coalition with the Mennonites to develop a Credit Union and 100 yr mortgages might be the answer. Or selling land to family trusts, even selling at a discount creating equity immediately and used as wealth building for the trusts.

We just got back from Shipshewana. We went to the Rise N Roll. Oh you are so right. Those powdered sugar cinnamon donuts are the best donuts we have ever had! We also had a great soft pretzel from Ben’s next to the E and S sales. We will be coming back. We drove around and enjoyed the beautiful countryside, mostly away from Shipshewana. The Amish Community your showing pretty much looks like the one near my home in Central Pennsylvania. The Amish donuts near my home is called Sweeties Donuts. Also The Purple Martin Bakery. The PMB makes whoopie pies, moon pies and Fry pies. Our Amish Community has many Roofing Businesses. They make rustic furniture. kitchen cabinets. Lots of Amish sawmills, and pallet makers. Some work with metal making fencing for livestock and metal work on their buggies.

I think a lot of people were buying RVs in 2020 because of Covid and plane travel being interrupted. Now I see them for sale all over my area, due in part to the gas prices. Pretty sad!

People were buying cars and boats also making more money not working with more free time on their hands and then not having to pay rent either which meant more money. The drive from Lagrange south and west into Topeka is really a pleasant drive, lots of well kept farms and plenty of animals to look at. I'm sure plenty of first time visitors find the horse n buggy stalls at Walmart , and other retailers a bit bizarre. Although the Concord mall in Goshen is more or less failing , that particular mall is like stepping back into the 70's, worth a visit if you're out touring RV factories and need a quick walk to stretch your legs..

On the other hand the 2020 Jayco we bought was SLAPPED TOGETHER, and I mean screws falling out, rubbish under the linoleum, metal shavings turn up in the carpet from the slideouts every time we tow it somewhere. Still finding flaws... none of the cabinet doors are put on evenly, some of them just falling off. The quality is HORRIBLE.

I'm a trucker that delivers ac components to all the rv plants in that area. Parts come from kansas. Jayco, Thor, grand design and forest river are the best to deliver too. Fast unload and friendly people. Keystone not so much. I actually just delivered a load to forest river in millersburg off wabash st. Only took them 30 minutes to unload a full 53ft dry van.

C.J., Shipshewana use to be a great place to go 5 a.m. to the Auctions the Amish owned & ran. You could get good items. Sure miss that but when Chicago started bringing bus loads of city folk, it all changed & there were over 1,000 vendors set up selling items they would buy from Dollar Store to sell, ouch. It just turned into a big Flea Market. I remembered the Hardware General Store🥾🥾👖🧤🧵🪡🔦🕯📪🪓🔨⛏🪚🔧🔧🪛🪜🧰🧺🧹🪣 in Shipshewana you could get anything ya needed. Then heard it burned down & did not know if they rebuilt. The Restaurant, the only one then, served the best Pie's & Meals, omg was it ever good. Driving over from Goshen, the Amish had set up church tables to sell Baked Goods Fresh from the Oven right in their Yards right near the Road. They had been baking all night & day before. You could get a 3 pound Pound Cake for $1.50 & Homemade Breads🍞🍞& Cookies🍪& Cakes🍰🎂Pies🥧! Yes I know, it was a different time. My Aunts home in Goshen, the Amish Eggman would come by weekly selling his Fresh Egg's🥚🥚🥚🥚from what I use to call the Station Wagon Buggy. He invited me to go with him back to his Farm to see his Chickens🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐣🐤🐥🐓 & Farm. It was a great ride & his Horse🐴was like a Milk Horse🐴knew when to Stop & Go. I enjoyed those times. Shop'n On Main Street In Goshen the stores had 2 Entrances, 1 In Front & 1 In Rear Of Store. The Rear Door was there for the Amish as they would hitch up their Buggy's to Post in the Alley. Had check-out registers at both ends. On Friday & Saturday Nights use to go Cruizin Up & Down Main Street In Goshen. When saw the Movie🎥🎞American Graffiti, I thought for sure they had filmed it in Goshen. We use to do the Chinese Fire Drill, jump out of the Car🚙& run around it & back in before the Light🚦changed to Green Again. LOL🤣. The Goshen Fair🎡🍦🌭🍔🍟🍩🍭🥤was great with the Quilt Auction & Horse Races & Rides. Heard👂they stopped the Horse🐎🐎🐎🐎 Races. I remember the Amish Men would be gathered & Bet''n💵on the Races in back of the Stands😅. Peddlers Village use to be out of town just in Elkhart. Was a great gathering place & run & owned by the Amish & the Auctions were great to go to & get good items from. Then heard they closed down that location & moved to another one. Know all the places you talked about & been to them all many times. Goshen College I heard has come of age accepting the LGBTQ🏳‍🌈🏳‍⚧Community. It has really grown from it's beginnings. Everyone is Born👶👶🏿👶🏾👶🏻who they are. Jesus was all about Love💖& not all that been added onto over the many centuries. Elkhart County, only one ever knew where the County Court House was in Goshen & not in Elkhart😅. Been many years since ever been back. All the Kin Folk have passed on. A lot of Trailer & RV Business have closed down & many merged with others. C.J. nothing stays the same in life. Yes there are some places where it rarely changes much. I am blessed my Mechanic & Loven💜Friend & His Family of Wife & 5 Kids are Mennonite. In my life have never gone back to where I once lived or spent a lot of great times in my life. Ive lived full time in my Keystone Springdale 21' RV full time since 2018. I absolutely appreciate the build quality of my camper. Of course there are problems, but overall, it's better than most of the houses I've lived in.

We have a Forest River / Rockwood Geo Pro 19FD which so far looks to be a very quality built unit. All we've found so far is a few screws that were 'over driven' stripped out of the particle board countertop where the cooktop is installed.

I had no idea Furrion was an RV-related company. That thing out front is the Prosthesis exo-bionic racing mech. 'Racing' is still a very optimistic goal with this thing. I've seen it a couple of times at Burning Man, and they've gotten good enough that they can maintain a walking pace for a while without falling over. Still really cool.

I worked at the auto plant in Ohio that rhymes with Rhonda for over 26 years. I recognize something similar. The production workers learn how to work faster and faster. It's the key to success really. Just having a few seconds extra between processes makes a huge difference . But oddly enough many could not shut off this behavior. They would run to the time clock zoom out of the parking , crash and burn their lives down in every way possible. Love those donuts too !

Essenhaus house has amazing buffet and one of the best car shows on every thursday. I highly recommend buying a pie to take home. Their peanut butter pie is the best. Oh and for $5 bucks you can take a ride in a 2 horsepower carriage ride.

My work is based out of Elkhart and I have to drive between, Elkhart, Middlebury, Wakarusa, and Goshen, back and forth, all week long. I am appalled almost daily at the way automobile drivers show a lack of care and often contempt for the Amish bicycle and carriage drivers in the area. On any given day I will have to pass between ten and twenty Amish buggies and bicycles in the area.

I’m from Elkhart. I have been in the RV industry most of my life. Because of the driving force of the industry, just about every other job in the area is set up to support either the materials or the workers. With one of my jobs being delivering the fiberglass caps, I’ve seen every one of the factories and locations. I’ve even been to secret R and D locations or offsite storage and such. Everything from Forest River off of old 20 Elkhart (plt 41 I think) to Topeka paint and graphics.

In the summer the Das Essenhause does car shows every Thursday evening. Also, I was bummed about the ‘Topeka Petting Zoo’ closing, but apparently they moved it to shipshewanna? And the gas station food in the areas of Topeka and shipshe right there are soooo good! The one just west of 5 on 20 or the one at 5 in Topeka. I miss the fried mushrooms or the breakfast pizza. The gas station out in Howe by the toll road has fire food too. I miss driving that type of delivery truck.

After seeing this video I now know my RV is riddled with problems! How can they understand the RVers needs when they don’t use the RV’s themselves? Sure they dont pull them with their horses!

Very sad this is happening to the community. I myself feel bad for the Amish that work at the factories as I do believe the RV market is about to slow down a bunch. Most people spend and live to what they make and like you said the land has gone way up and when work slows it will take its toll on the people. I myself don't wish anything bad for the workers but I am hoping for the RV dealers to fall flat on their faces. These last couple of years they have taken such advantage of the consumer during this Plandemic that we had or having. No reason a trailer should go up $20,000.00 or more on a $35,000.00 trailer that now is $55,000.00 You look at the discounts that used to be 25-30% off MSRP now are maybe giving 10%. They are gouging the consumer now. The car dealers are doing the same so hope they follow in the falling on their faces. Great video and I have always been impressed with the Amish culture.

That's why that I plan on keeping my 2011 Silverado and repairing it as needed. If people would quit paying the prices, they drop theirs.

The industry is slowing down now. But it's weird because Grand Design is building 5 new buildings and plans to hire 400 ppl bur just layer off ppl. Also Dutchman and Jayco just built new buildings but Forest River has some plants doing a week on then a week off.

@@jasonsliger5430 I agree with you on that. People keep buying and the prices keep going up. I am with you on driving the older vehicles. I drive a 2001 Ram 2500 diesel and the wife drives a 1998 Honda Accord Coupe V6. Both our vehicles look beautiful. People ask me quite often, who painted your truck? When I tell them it is factory they can hardly believe it. It looks that good. As long as I can get parts and buy diesel it will be in the garage. I am in Ca. so you never know what this state will do. Take care and keep the Silverado running.

@@chadwhitfield6946 I have looked at the Grand Design trailers and have to say they are not sending each one through the 200 point inspection that they claimed when they started. We have seen a drawer that was 3/4 of an inch out on one side and it was a bathroom drawer so not real wide. A blind man would have caught that. Their build quality to me is no better than a Rockwood or Jayco. My buddy has a Solitude 5er with full body paint and the front cap is cracked at both sides. It appears that the thing was installed like it was a little snug and had too much pressure by the way both sides cracked and opened up. Grand Design won't take care of it as they say the caps only have a year warranty. All the towable bumper pull and 5ers are slammed together.

@@jimg2885 ok, don't buy anything from Grand Design. You feel better now? I have no feelings about it either way. You buying Jayco instead would help the company I work for more actually. We don't provide too much for GD but do tons for Jayco.

The Amish also are furniture manufacturers . I know three areas with northern Indiana being one of them. I had a Jayco popup years ago and had no trouble with it. It was put together very well and held up fine being towed many thousands of miles.

The best donuts are at Grandma's pantry in wakarusa. They are made from scratch. Rise and roll are made with bagged mixes and junk. Not like when they first started where the original owners made everything from scratch... however I do like the peanut brittle they call crack. It melts in your mouth. Would love to have the recipe. Last time I ate at essenhaus now at least 5 yrs ago cuz my Daughter was illegally kidnapped 3 yrs ago... They charged me almost 40 bucks for me and my Daughter who was 5 for 2 buffets late at night and she didn't eat her food. I asked for a 2 go container for her food and they wanted to charge me over 12 dollars a lb for food I already paid for. Then I proceeded to ask what they did with all the food and they throw it ALL AWAY AND ITS NOT MADE FROM SCRATCH EITHER. THE cookies are Sam's or Costco and sauces and gravys are canned or bagged and noodles are packaged as well. It's deceiving and greed. I guess I'm just old school... It was already rediculous they charged me full price for a child. We only drank water with lemon too.

I've had those Amish Crack donuts, down here in southern Grant County. They ARE great. Maybe somebody up there could figure out a way start delivering them to businesses down this way. It would be a lot of expense in fuel and time. One person in one big van might be able to figure out a way.

I have a friend who had the Amish in western PA put up a pole barn and then do two additions on his house as they did an extremely good quality job.

Rise and Roll is great but my family and I discovered an even better place County Line Bakery in Middlebury. The have the best baked goods. My favorite is peacan Roll. You need to also go to Tiffany's in Topeka.

Here's the thing, the amish really make alot of money working on their farm, building furniture, cabinets, doors, barns, houses etc. My family personally have made millions crafting and selling Dining room sets and rocking chairs. My immediate family stepped back a ways from the faith, but my amish relatives are still just as caring and forgiving as you'd expect them to be. God comes first, family is second, hard work and dedication is thrid.. everything else doesn't matter

Miller--that's my understanding of the Amish community. and this administration is trying to destroy their way of life. The Amish people believe in quality rather than quantity, hence the furniture, food and everything they do is so much better.

I have been to the area many times. Have stayed at Essenhaus when traveling on business. (The cleanest Inn / Hotel on planet earth!) Custard pie is my crack.

I worked in one of the highest producing lumber mills in the World. Fast paced hard work that was very dangerous. I worked six- 12 hour days per week for years. I tracked the quantity of my work trying to set a new production record every day provided there was enough lumber available. Like you I was always looking for ways to be more efficient. That was in the 70’s. We made $4 an hour and everybody worked their tale off where I worked and we had pride in our work. Good video for todays teenagers to see how hard people can work. Take care!

The surge in Camping In General, and RVs atop that, is an effect of the pandemic lockdown. When everything else closed, Nature was still open. So, a lot of people decided that they were suddenly outdoorspeople. But they still want their comforts. The used camper market has been insane too. It seems to be peaking or have peaked, as people realize they only got out a handful of times, and now they have to pay to store that camper for the winter, or realizing that they don't really like the outdoors, they just didn't have other options. So, it's going to be a good time to buy a used RV in the times to come, if you're willing to play the game.

I bought a camper this year. I had originally intended to buy new and made an offer early this year on a travel trailer at a dealership. They wouldn't budge on the price. So I found a really nice used 2013 model for 1/3 the price and am completely happy with it. It seems to be built with better quality standards and materials so I'm glad I didn't go "new". A couple months later, the dealership that wouldn't budge on the price began hounding me with marketing calls, asking me to come back and look at all their "amazing deals" with prices slashed much lower than my offer earlier in the year. I imagine they will be taking a loss. Serves them right for being so greedy in the Spring.

I worked in RV's back in the late 60's while in college. I made enough during the summer to pay for next year's college. The biggest problem now is that there is not much available for the Amish after they hit 50 because they can't keep up in the factories. I told my sons that they needed to do something that would sustain them in their later years so they all went on to college. You are very right about the RV money ruining things. I have seen it go that way in the last 47 years I have been here. Every one I know is looking for something else to sustain them in later years. Rise and roll are too sweet, as are krispy kreme. If you can find a convenience store that has them, Harlan donuts are the best. Janie's food truck donuts are pretty darn good too.

All donuts are GREAT but be careful. What is a donut- really? It's FRIED FAT with SUGAR! It may take a toll on you in your later years. Yeah, they are really good (-I still kinda eat them- moderately) but Try and find a smarter alternative now. It'll pay off later.
