Kevin is a Legend in the reptile business! He has been breeding reptiles as long as anyone out there at the highest levels. Kevin, let me say this. I learn so much about the animals, the husbandry, the intricacies of how you handle and work with them watching your videos. You make it simple to understand. There are a tremendous numbers of pettubers that are annoying and clearly don't even put the animals as their number priority vs the numbers of views a vid gets. Man, you'd do you! Keep teaching the rest of the world about the monitors, the venomous snakes, the retics and the balls. We should all learn something every day and I personally learn something each time I watch your videos. Keep up the great work!

@@AlexsAgamids everyone has a right to their opinion, it's his belief and choice to not breed or sell spiders. He feels it's wrong so he's doing what he feels is right based on the knowledge he has, just like everyone does. I think both arguments have good points, the majority of spiders are fine even with the wobble, and some have a more extreme case and people see the extreme cases and feel like they can't support the possibility of it happening. Now I don't agree with the ban because the majority of spiders are just fine even thriving but it's also wrong to say someone has no right to have their own opinion.

See comments like this are what I disagree with, you don’t have to be an expert in a field to have an opinion on a moral issue and it’s absurd that you would even suggest that, you don’t have to have a degree in chemical engineering or military history to have an ethical standpoint of the use of a flamethrower on the battlefield.what I hate about both petubers and breeders is the magnitude of the immaturity on both sides by never civilly conversing with each other and just throw insults at each other. Kevin may not be big on KZbin, but I've been following his work and going to Zoo Creatures (his pet store here in NH) since it was a tiny place in a strip mall, and I can say with confidence that he's one of the world's foremost authorities on reptile breeding and husbandry. He's also a self taught geneticist with more practical knowledge and understanding of the subject than most people with a PhD. On top of that, he cares deeply about the kind treatment and well being of every single animal in his care. This should be the biggest reptile channel on KZbin and I hope that someday it is. Keep the new content coming!

It was a real treat to introduce another generation to the hobby and begin a whole new tradition of fun memories. To see the excitement and wonder on their faces was what it's all about. as someone who’s worked in the chain of smaller rural pet stores, including for some that don’t handle the amount that they hold responsibly or always sell them responsibly, it’s much more the irresponsible owners I have a problem with, and it’s hard to see breeders accommodating it with animals they’ve lovingly bred when it’s never their job to worry about our end of the chain. we’re the ones that worry about it, even as someone who’s disconnected myself from those stores and this industry in general, you still sorta worry about it cause you have a heart I absolutely understand it’s never anyone in your industry’s fault, but as someone near the bottom of that chain, I won’t act like it’s not hard. and it’s mostly cause it’s hard work that you pour your life into, and I feel like I get to see some of the worst people who get to take advantage of it

Ball behavior question - About 5 months ago I got an Onyx ball off morph market... very slight duckbill with a slight bug eye and absolutely gorgeous temperament. He's on frozen thawed and is a really good eater, but when I offer it to him he'll S up and look like he wants it, but never strikes. I set the rat down and after a while (a few minutes to an hour) he'll just start nosing around it and start eating it. No biting, no coiling. I checked his mouth and everything looks normal. He does eat 90% of the time offered, so I know it's not a "problem", but I'm wondering if this is a sign of something bigger I should be watching out for, or if it's just a one in X many behavior that some of them do. Figured a large scale breeder would be the one to ask since you encounter the sheer numbers.

Austin Mark Not every single spider has issues! It's only some. So needless to say; yes there's plenty of people who ignore the ones with issues and breed them anyway. But a breeder who actually cares about their animals will only selectively breed the ones without issues. As a person in the all animals industry, including livestock, cats, dogs, and reptiles. It's not only in snakes! There's over breeding of faults in every breed of every animal; by bad breeders. Kevin has admitted, yes he's had spiders with wobble. No he doesn't breed them!

I have a spider ball python, I understand is genetic issue with them, but unlike the videos I see on KZbin, mine doesn't seem to roll around or have any issue standing up straight, never misses a strike and so on, really makes me wonder how these people who are having all these problem really keep their snakes, just baffles me how mine only seems to have a tiny head shake but when handling or feeding it doesn't even seem noticeable, love your work Kevin, I'm a massive fan 👌👌

I knew this man and met him more than 20 years ago when he was using his house as a facility and he purchased a few unproven ball pythons from me for a very reasonable price I thought since I didn't want to take all that time and space to do it myself. That said I found Kevin, to be very honest and straightforward and extremely intelligent and experienced when it came to reptiles. In my opinion you can always trust and believe in everything he said then and says now. I have since given up on keeping reptiles myself but am still interested in all the new morphs and technology involved in keeping them. I also know and met Brian, also and he as well is a cool guy however neither of them would probably remember me it's just been far too long ago. Ken.

As he should be. We are talking about a kid with a couple years experience with a VERY limited number of animals with a spyder gene....1! Whereas both Kevin and Brian independently have been doing this for 2x as long as he is old and with exposure to tens of 1000's more animals. Just because 1 animal with the spyder gene has a serious issue does not mean the entire population with that gene does. Once again... "big breeders" recognize problems and have the ability to eliminate the effects of the gene by doing what they do.

Man, don't let negative comments or counter-videos get under your skin. Most of these kids are coming up in outrage/cancel culture. Meaning they're SUPER quick to make judgments and comment on things they possess little to zero knowledge about. You guys obviously love your animals which is why they're not just healthy but also SOCIALIZED. Socialization is a learned set of behaviors that can only occur when an animal has vastly positive experiences with humans. Most of the arguments made against breeders are the equivalent of name calling. The only criticisms that merit responses are ones that come from a place of critical thought, not knee-jerk reactions made out of ignorance.

I absolutely agree that there is no problem with breeders, as long as ALL their animals are kept in good enclosures and well kept and as long as breeders do not specifically breed animals that WILL be born with a life hindering disability such as spider ball pythons and English bull dogs. And a tip for everyone, if you are ever being criticised by someone, say your side of the story, don’t make fun of them, portray them as children or call them names, say why you disagree with them and stimulate healthy discussion. Otherwise you look pathetic and that’s what I feel this video is.

I think some people hate big breeders because of the focus on quantity over quality. Sort of like someone who breeds a few dogs per year and focuses on quality, as opposed to a puppy mill. (Not saying that’s my position towards you)

Those babies are gorgeous. I think education regarding reptiles is needed. Without education I was terrified of snakes. Jay at Prehistoric Pets taught me so much that I loved egg pullings and seeing the newborns. After that I found the big snakes to be awesome. (Venomous snakes not so much)

As someone rudely said to me recently, Let's be real. Although Kevin isn't rich because he puts his money back into the animals, most of us who just want a beautiful pet snake, would have to mortgage our house to be able to buy a snake from NERD. Everyday average middle class people can't afford to spend thousands on a pet that will never pay for itself through breeding. In my unrealistic opinion it would be irresponsible and selfish to take that kind of money away from the family budget, in today's economy. So what we're left with, is only breeders and the truly rich can afford these animals thus keeping the price unreachable for the rest of us.

We need a video concerning the treatment of small breeders once they begin to produce. Its all smiles and hi’s and good lucks but once that person starts to produce it seems certain intenties will do anything to denounce the effort or quality of a project, animal or breeder altogether. Basically playing dirty no matter if that breeder is a honest, good person that cares for the animals or not. This is hugely a topic that needs to be addressed especially with all the new people in the hobby now because its outrageous the things Ive seen. I started 20 years ago and was told then to grow a thick skin but this hobby should be for everyone and with a certain fairness. Things have moved a long way from 20 years ago community wise in the wrong direction. Also how do big breeders feel when a smaller breeder mentions where the animals that produced the offspring they are presenting were original acquired. Is this now frowned on? If not what are the rules surrounding it. We need advanced videos now. The show and tell is always fine but theres much more technical things in the hobby that need to be addressed. Speaking on Kevin/Nerd without him we wouldnt have the hobby. He basically started the whole industry with the spider gene. Still one of my favorite breeders in the hobby. Someone that genuinely cares and loves the animals and not in it basically for monetary reasons. He has the largest wealth of knowledge and also has a diverse collection of animals which is also amazing not just focusing on one species. Are big breeders a bad thing? Thats a two sided sword. In some cases yes and alot of cases no. The pet industry still imports 100’s of thousands of animals a year from the wild. I think if we can shift that towards sustainably produced animals while helping the economy then we are headed in the right direction. Lets be honest the animals that are captured and shipped in annually are not recieving the best care and alot of cases its also harmful to the eco system they are harvested and all around unethical now that it is not the only option.
