@@WoodByWrightHowTo I wonder if getting some washable ink and putting it on the bottom of your foot before putting it on would help with visualizing where your foot is and where it’s coming in contact with the shoe. The ink in theory would leave a shallow mark only where your foot is coming in contact with the shoe, so it would (again _in theory_ ) show where the pressure points are and act as a guide for where to carve
@MauricioRPP1
@MauricioRPP1 3 ай бұрын
You can't carve 100% right on the first try, so repeating the ink test would not be feasible. That's over-thinking the situation. Just just a bit, carve a bit, repeat until comfortable. Simple.

My mother had some wooden shoes she wore for 10+ years, she said when she first got them they were very uncomfortable but she was not one to waste any money so she just dealt with the discomfort. Over time they took on the shape of her foot and she loved those shoes for many years until they cracked. This was back in the 70s when info wasn't so readily available, I wish she had known how to repair them because she still loves to talk about them and tell that story. Well-made leather shoes can take on the shape of your foot, as leather is flexible and especially so with the heat and moisture generated by your foot. Wooden shoes cannot physically take on the shape of anything other than the shape they already have, because wood doesn't work like that.

Thank you for asking, this was my exact question. A little more clarification if possible: how do you know exactly what area of the shoe corresponds with where you feel pain in the foot? Maybe it’s just my OCD or something but I feel it would be very easy to accidentally remove a “low” spot when you’re actually trying to remove a “high” spot. Is it just an experience thing or is it actually just that easy to hit the right spot? I have concrete floors throughout my house and if these feel as nice as you say I would love to go up to the shop and finish a pair as house shoes

In the Netherlands we used to have a practice (long ago) in small towns where a specific tree whas planted, and after about 15/20 years it whas cut down and a new one whas planted. The timberman/clog maker would make clogs for all the villagers from the tree. It would take people about a month to wear them in for them to become comfortabel. For that time people would wear norse sokken (really thick soft socks) in them. And by the time they got worn out, the tree whas big enough again for the circle to repeat. Very sustainable footwear indeed. I'll look up what tree whas used, hold on. (If I never edit this and you wanna know, give me a response, I probably couldn't find the comment back)

Oke so traditionally in the Netherlands we would use willow or poplar trees. Untreated poplar whas most popular becouse its really hard, so it doesn't wear out very fast and it protects from almost anything without breaking, but it's also a quite light wood. So it doesn't feel to heavy on your feet. It's also fine with getting wet (the Netherlands is very wet) and the trees are very comfortable growing all over the country. After making the clogs the would be set aside to dry and harden for a few weeks. After that it depends on preferences and budget. People who would mostly do indoor work would often wear them plain. People working outside would have them vanished for a longer lifespan and a bit richer people would sometimes have them painted in traditional designs

Do the clogs affect your balance? Do your feet shift around in them at all? Does changing positions change where/how they sit? Sorry for all the quesions, but they do have a purpose. A few years ago, I learned that I walk differently than most people, due to some bones. Not bad, just different. Due to this, my balance point when I'm standing upright is constantly shifting. I'm never "standing still" - I'd always thought it was just an expression - and my orthotics try to make up for it, to very low success. Having something that makes me feel like everything is making contact at all times maybe could change something about it all.

So if you want stylish, and a little more (conventional) comfort, get a 'Danish clog'. It's what a lot of medical professionals wear, and I wear it every day. Different styles, different materials, different fits and shapes but typically a leather or synthetic leather upper. The Dutch style wooden ones will be superior in both protecting and keeping the feet warm. Remarkably comfy, especially since it's easy to mold to whatever you need. No, contrary to popular belief, most of us live in urban area's where both fashion and practicality makes us mostly wear sneakers. I don't even have a pair of Dutch style clogs, because I lack situations to need them.

I got the duct tape and cardboard combo sandles brother that's all you need fold the cardboard for additional padding, as you walk around the cardboard will compress the layers and form perfect to your foot. Use some duct tape to make sandel straps and bing bang boom ya done

the concept of something being soft is the same, actually. the more points of contact a surface has with your body, the more comfortable it feels for the specific reasons shown in this short. soft things, like pillows, are supposed to do the same thing. if you didn't twist and turn in your sleep you could probably carve a wooden block to fit your head exactly and sleep in perfect comfort.

Dutchman here. Shaped to your foot they are really comfortable, and they will literally "grow on you" as they wear down to the stance of your feet when you use them every day. I know someone who latched his clogs back together with iron wire when they broke, because he loved them so much.

I can understand they may be ok for standing if properly fitted, but walking? How? They have zero flex, that's not how feet work 🤷🏻‍♂️

there is a lot of space above the foot so it can bend all it needs to.

I wore some clogs in Sweden. They weren't fit to my feet, but I thought they were comfortable for going outside to smoke. I would have taken a pair home but I lived in Florida and they probably wouldn't be good there. Now I have rubber clogs, aka Crocs 😂

you probably won't answer this but how hard are they to break? if i dropped a brick on one would it break? what about hitting one with a hammer?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 3 ай бұрын
A brick dropped from hip height would not break it. If I dropped a 3 lb sledgehammer from head height it might crack it but your toes would probably still be protected. In the EU they're actually listed as safety shoes in their version of OSHA

you put them on and feel where the pain is and then remove that spot and then repeat. It is relatively easy for yourself. the trick is doing it for someone else with out a lot of experience and training.
