I remember from The First Heretic book I believe, the word bearers actually comment on this. They study a "squad" of custodes fighting and they realise that they don't fight as one like apace marines. Each of them is fighting as if alone, whereas space marines fight as if they are one entity. It's a cool detail and makes you wonder about their weaknesses and strengths compared to space marines

​@@athan5647 Yup and it is the Astsrtes greatest strength. I kike that tidbit myself. The Custodes are great and much more powerful, but an Astsrtes giving the same amount of combat experience will work as one without dialog with less effort. Brothers in Arms. Still Custodes would win hands down in an even fight outside the most legendary of Astartes. Astartes brotherhood is what caused the downfall of the Imperium with the warrior lodges.

@@Syakirin57 There are around 10k custodes out there and a primach is to a custodes what a custodes is to a regular astartes. Custodes are extremely powerful but primarchs are on a whole different level.

None of the Custodes are human children that are modified. Each of them is individually created from scratch using genetic material taken from several sources, primarily the Emperor. The reason there are so few is that this process is incredibly difficult, and expensive to create even a single Custodian. One of the unique genetic gifts they have is a gene similar to that of Pariahs or Blanks, which means that psychic/warp effects are much better resisted and overcome. Another reason why there are relatively so few Custodies is that much of their wargear is unique techonology which is beyond expensive to replicate and reproduce, and the knowledge of how to do so, is only available to those within the Custodes Project deep within the vaults of Terra. Each Custodian is a 100% unique whole creation from scratch, with incredibly powerful and unique weapons and armour, each one of which would cost in terms of resources and man power more that it would to create an each new Chapter of Space Marines.

Nah a custodian is above a chapter master. In their psychic awakening back in 8e we see a single custodian and some SoS kill a captain and his honour guard. If I recall the Custodian managed to cross the room and swipe at the captain before he even drew his pistol.

The Custodians aren't upgraded Astartes, Astartes are downgraded Custodians. I love the Custodians for that, as they are pieces of art, each and every one of them is one of the Emperor's greatest works, surpassed only by the Primarchs themselves. They are the peak of humanity (Primarchs aren't really humans at this point, as their father isn't either)
