As a current DBA student, I have to day this isn't an accurate description of DBA vs PhD. Not surprisingly, Dr. Dave takes the view of the traditional PhD, and essentially downplays the rigor and career options of a DBA student. The PhD and DBA are equivalent degrees. DBA students do not complete a "project" to graduate, they do a dissertation just as PhD students do. The difference is the research tenor--DBA students are focused on practically relevant research, while PhDs are more focused on theoretical. My dissertation will approach 200 pages, and be just as rigorous as my PhD counterparts. It's frustrating that the typical PhD viewpoint is the one that Dr. Dave is promoting. It denigrates the value of the DBA vs. the PhD, which is unfortunate and simply not accurate.

Thank you so much for the more accurate view. My only hope was to get clarification and be helpful - not to be divisive in anyway. My main point is that the outcomes of what you do are different, and not to downplay its rigor and difficultly. When I was trying to do was carve out what ‘theory’ means for people who have not heard that term before. It’s ALL difficult and challenging. What you are doing is amazing! And, as discussed in many of my videos, I am big proponent of a diversity of styles and types of programs to match peoples’ interests and expected outcomes.

@@R3ciprocityTeam Thank you for the clarification and my apologies if the comment was perhaps a bit too sharp as that was unintentional. As a DBA student, it seems that most PhD students view the degree as less rigorous and that, in my experience and those of my classmates, there seems to be a PhD vs DBA divide. It's disheartening since the DBA is extremely difficult to finish, as is the PhD. I think perhaps my earlier comment was based in a bit of frustration around those experience vs. your video. I do think it is important that students considering the DBA understand that there will be some pushback from PhD students as I have mentioned. If you can publish, then the playing field is level. I would argue that for any DBA or prospective DBA student that plans to transition into an academic career, you will not be viewed as a true "member" of the academe unless you can publish in good journals in your field. Publishing is your only real currency and I think the DBA student will need to successfully publish (very difficult to do) to be viewed on equal footing to a PhD. Apologies again for the tone of my original comment...I think your videos are very helpful overall!

Brian your assessment is not 100% correct and both you and Dr. Dave are correct and it is dependent upon the school that you are attending, as I have seen both. He gave you a perspective and you gave him yours and they are not mutually exclusive. I did not want a DBA, just as some students in school start down an EdD path and then change to and went the Ph.D. path. The issue is that the DBA or the EdD is harder to explain especially outside of academia. So, there are schools that offer the DBA and the Ph.D. in Business/Business Administration and DBA does a project-based assignment with smaller papers and the Ph.D. does a complete research-based paper. Yet, there are other universities where both degree programs' requirements are identical. If Dr. Dave is online completing multiple videos trying to explain the differences and there are quite a few similar ones online, this lends to the fact that not only are hiring people outside of academia not understanding the degree and neither are individuals that are looking to enroll. Further, I have seen where people don't have the option and just go ahead with the DBA. One of the biggest reasons that there is even a DBA is because Harvard's business school was not allowed/authorized to offer a Ph.D. and the only option was a DBA at the university and other universities just copied their degree nomenclature. Even Harvard has started to shift away from the DBA, as students wanted a Ph.D. and the Harvard Business School is now offering a Ph.D. in Business Administration. This change was started in 2018-2019. "Beginning with the 2018-2019 academic year, HBS began offering an Interfaculty Ph.D. in Business Administration, a transition from the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree." www.hbs.edu/doctoral/overview/Pages/history-of-excellence.aspx#:~:text=Beginning%20with%20the%202018%2D2019,Business%20Administration%20(DBA)%20degree. So, again they are not mutually exclusive. Yet, the end result is what you as the student that has to do the work wants. I think instead of doing an MBA< it is easier to go DBA direct since a DBA is an MBA strong as he stated. Use the money for the MBA and just invest into the DBA.

You cannot directly enrol DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) if you was not able to finish the Masters of Business Administration. You should finished at least one masters degree before enrolling doctoral courses. I am a proud DBA graduate...Finished it for 5 years with dissertation.
