I own the case-style sax mute from Best Brass. Used it for years now when I need to play quietly. My family is its biggest fan. 😊 I can recommend it for alto, but maybe not tenor due to the weight and size. But for me, it has enabled real, silent practice.

Nice review of the pros and cons of an ewi. I received a Travel Sax 2 for Christmas. I plan to use it just when traveling. I understand it's limitations, but practicing fingerings, timing, etc for a weekend should still be helpful to me, even as a beginner. I don't travel that much, so 99% of my time will still be on a real sax.

Thank you so much for doing this video! It comes at a time when I’ve been debating whether to purchase a Jean-Paul alto saxophone vs the EMEO. I have never played a woodwind before, though have experience playing a few different brass instruments way back over forty years ago when I was in high school.

Picked up the Aerophone AE-05 a while back and it's been great as a complete beginner (had the Akai EWI USB prior to that and learning two different key layouts didn't seem like a great idea, regardless of most of it being the same). Of course you still need regular practice with a real sax, but for practicing fingering & sight-reading it's great. With a small kid around, the only time I get to practice is in the evenings and a bit on the weekends. So the ability to practice daily on the Aerophone and the real sax at the weekend is the best compromise I can make IMO.

That original video you posted put me on a path to wanting to get my own alto sax. Probably getting one in 6 months. I ended up getting a xaphoon instead of a digital sax and now I want the real deal (still love the xaphoon though).

Is he going to mention the Travel Sax?! Gladly, you have. I'm positive that it actually purposefully being harder and more sensitive to mistakes, has improved my technique on my actual sax. Almost literally forces me to keep my fingers "glued to the keys", so it reduced hand flapping or made me more aware of troublespots. That and simply spending more time playing after work and diner, whilst my kids are asleep. It's helped my acoustic sax finger technique more than Aerophone has. Travel sax has keywork very similar to that of an acoustic sax, with keys being different distances from the instrument. Aerophone has all buttons, not keys, from the same different. I am however happy to own both, since Aerophone's sounds, ease of use as well as potential for sounddesign for noobs, are way better and varied then the Travel Sax options are. I do use Aerophone live, but I have to practice for that specifically on Aerophone. Travel sax turns out to be the better add-on to my acoustic sax practice. Depends on what you want. Accidently bought me an Aerophone first, but now I'm happy that it opened up the exiting new world of synthesizers for me. It's made me a more versatile musician and I'm no longer "bound" to sax parts only, but I don't have to become a multi-instrumentalist.

1. They're very affordable. 2. You can plug headphones in & play without making noise pollution. I would not recommend them to 1st or 2nd year players in school bands. It's a very unrealistic playing experience. For woodwind doublers it's just another set of similar (yet not exactly the same) playing experiences. Flute, clarinet, saxophone, the EWI, recorder, tin whistle, etc.

For me its either EWI or nothing. I enjoy playing my YDS-120. I know its not comparable to sax. So what? I still enjoy it!

My conclusions are EWI can help you to learn fingering and learning melodies, but you must think EWIs are just synthesizers, and you've to think of it as a synthesizer.
