Yo! If you look at defining characteristics of language from a linguistics perspective, there are some pretty cool features (that are usually agreed) upon that qualify or disqualify some communicative elements from being considered a language. For example, can they express discreteness? In the sense that they can express when or in what tense an event will occur?

Emojis are kinda like punctuation marks. Question marks can indicate confusion, Exclamation marks indicate a strong emotion, both together or an interrobang indicate bewilderment. Though this mostly applies to the face emojis, stuff like emojis of buildings, animals, etc. don't implicitly imply emotion, though I can see how some might use them (e.g. a fox emoji might imply sarcasm or sneakiness). I like to also equate them to Chinese characters: each represents a distinct thing or idea, or sometimes multiple, like a house for a house obviously, but other stuff too, like a heart can represent hearts and love. And I think emojis aren't a language, just like Chinese characters aren't a language, whereas Chinese is. All languages can be written in all scripts (though you'll probably need to add diacritics and such) from Latin to Cyrillic to Arabic to Chinese characters. Emoji is a script, not a full language.

A few nitpicks: Hieroglyphs were never a true alphabet, but rather a complex semi-logographic abjad-syllabary thing. Basically, there was totally different symbols for, say, _"b(Vowel)"_ , _"b(V)s"_ , _"Bes"_ etc. In fact, it seems you keep misusing "alphabet" for any writing system, when in reality it refers to a specific type (Namely, one that marks it's consonants and vowels with distinct characters, rather than having the vowels appear as part of the consonant [Abugidas], omitting the vowels entirely [Abjads], omitting the _consonants_ entirely [hypothetical Anti-Abjads], fusing both vowel and consonant into a single unit [Syllabaries, or "kanas"], or ignoring both and have symbols that abstractly convey ideas [Logographies]). Also, the pronunciation of "ASCII" is _"ass-KEE"_ , according to it's inventor. Now for my two cents: I think that, if anything, emojis would for a complimentary script to Latin, rather than supplanting it, sort of like the relationship between Kanji and Hiragana in Japanese: Two separate scripts working in tandem to cover different functions. And a final brick to this wall of text: There's actually a pretty big market for new languages, or _conlangs_ , to those of us (like myself) that make them. It's just it's mostly for making languages for artistic endeavors or secret codes more than international languages, nowadays.

Nice video. I love your editing as usual, and it was interesting to hear about the evolution of emojis and their value in society. Before emoji really started kicking off, I was fascinated by the ideas proposed to distinguish sarcasm in text (my favorite was backwards italics). Also, pissed off emoji you with scissors scares me a little. If Emojis did become a language, how do you think the words would be constructed? Would it be purely based on concepts (eg. happy face + sad face = bittersweet) or would we select certain emojis as letters (eg. happy face + fishing rod + eggplant = Joe)? Thanks for the video, and... U+1F4AD U+278B U+1F354 U+261B U+1F680
@Jabrils8 жыл бұрын
"Also, pissed off emoji you with scissors scares me a little." haha if we ever have a conversation, just please don't cut me off [ haha I kid man, it was only a bit ] but as far as how do I think itll be constructed? I dont know, as stated in the video, I don't believe it'll be like your last example simply because "Joe" in english isn't spelled the same in like Japanese for example so that'd be hard to try & make that offically bound to english, not to mention what would be the point if we have english right? I think that first we need a lot more emojis that can convey more ideas, then from there adapt the emoji language as much as possible to interpretive conversation [ i.e. person pointing to themselves = me, i, my, & that is something without language that most people can understand ]. from there the symbols can be simplified so that we can actually write it, then whala. but again, that is only my uneducated imagination. take it with a grain of salt. Remember to always feed your curiosity my friend. - Jabril

The e in "emoji" is an "eh" sound, like "edit."
@Jabrils8 жыл бұрын
interesting, I don't think i've ever heard someone phonically say it like that before. What part of the world are you from out of curiosity? - Jabril
@louisng1148 жыл бұрын
SEFD Science I am from Hong Kong and have been in the US for 15 years. I studied Japanese for two years as a foreign language in college. Japanese writing, other than Kanji and occasionally exceptions, is phonetic-based. Each Hiragana and Katakana character has a specific sound regardless of context. Every character in the same column as あ has an "a" sound like "art;" Every character in the same column as い has an "i" sound like "it;" Every character in the same column as う has an "u" sound like "boot;" Every character in the same column as え has an "e" sound like "edit;" Every character in the same column as お has an "o" sound like "on." It is a major pet peeve of mine that people pronounce "karaoke" as "ke-ri-ou-ki" despite the clear lack of "i" in the middle of the word. XD
@Jabrils8 жыл бұрын
Hey Louisng, you have my full belief my friend, that is very interesting. However what's more interesting to me is the sheer methodology of phonic adoption, emoji as you say is "eh"-moji, however, I feel if you tell that to most of the population they'd either not believe you or not care & continue to say emoji, does emoji now have 2 official phonic pronunciations? xD - Jabril
@louisng1148 жыл бұрын
SEFD Science Haha. I understand what you are saying. In fact, as I overhear students talking about manga during break time (I am a math tutor/teacher), I brought up the correct pronunciation of manga and other Japanese terms (yes, I am "that guy" who says "well, actually..." don't judge please :P. BTW, it still boggles me that know-it-all is an insult in the West). One of the students commented that the actual pronunciation "sounds weeb," despite the fact that they were talking about manga. XD
