We've gotten a lot of controversy over the pricing of some epoxy tables, so we're going to break it down for you with this custom table we built for Danica Patrick's winery.
Let us know if you have any questions or suggestions for future videos.

@@jeffmackdesigns for sure! This video is giving me ideas for a “Why are live edge slabs so expensive” video. So many people don’t understand the equipment cost alone that goes into milling lumber…not to mention the physical labor and so many other costs.

I understand that tools cost money but you really can't factor those in the cost, imagine getting a brake job done on your car and they factor in the tools, it would cost you thousands just for brakes, everything else is good though, rent, supplies, labor, but besides all that, you guys do awesome work 👍👍👍👍👍👍

Yeah, if you need to buy the tools for every job then yes but they last many years if looked after. Definitely should add maybe 10% for wear and tear.

Very insightful, informative and helpful. Most people don't appreciate the work and costs involved in making anything. Only see finished product and think it was easy. Point of clarification. You charge the full cost of tools on every project even if the tool was only used as part of the build? Do you apply the same principle to smaller builds ie coffee tables, charcuterie boards? Is this industry standard? Thanks.

You guys do awesome work. When doing a table with live edge and if it has a steep live edge do you make the steep part the top of the table? Some live edge are kind of straight up and down and not much character so how how do you position yours? I call it the sharp part of the live edge, do you put that on top or bottom
@jeffmackdesigns
@jeffmackdesigns Жыл бұрын
It really depends on the piece as a whole, but typically we throw our slabs in forms so that the live edges slope away from the top (like a hill leading down to the bottom). If we're dealing with steep edges, typically the wider side of the slab, if any, ends up on the bottom. Ultimately it's personal preference, we've done the opposite requested by customers in the past!

@Jeff Mack Designs thank you very much for your detailed reply. Thanks alot. I'm. Beginner and going to try my very first one and it's maple. It has some really nice live edge but the as you call it down hill slope is pretty steep on some places and very curvy. I didnt know if the wider part of the live edge needed to be on top or bottom of the actual finished product. But what i gather from you the bottom of the hill needs to be the bottom of the finished table!! Thank you very much. I love your line of empire molds by the way. I'm going to order the rectangular set in a couple weeks. Soon as I get the extra money. I've been trying and wanting some for months now but who knew starting a small wood shop was so costly haha.

I’m interested to know why you flood coat with epoxy before applying Rubio? I apply my Rubio to the bare wood, but always open to learning new methods
@jeffmackdesigns
@jeffmackdesigns Жыл бұрын
In this case, the wood needed to be stabilized. The epoxy was well absorbed into the grain which still allowed for us to sand and apply Rubio!

Question whats a flood coat of epoxy and why exactly did you need it
@jeffmackdesigns
@jeffmackdesigns Жыл бұрын
A flood coat is a term we use when you're pouring a thin layer of epoxy over a project to either finish/polish or in this case, stabilize the wood.

Stunning work guys! I make resin tables too and have been asked why it’s so much I always give the same answer: Considering some people will spend hundreds or thousands on designer brand clothing that doesn’t cost much more to make than a cheap brand of clothing, now you have a piece of quality furniture that if looked after will last generations…. I rest my case, same with tools you buy cheap you get what you pay for this isn’t ikea off the shelf chipboard 🙄 some people just don’t get it while wearing their expensive fashion brands of clothes and driving a luxury car. I bet the furniture we make outlasts both
@genericamerican7574
@genericamerican7574 Жыл бұрын
With clothing it sometimes depends on if they pay people who make it or mostly just the designer. If consumerism didn’t have a history of grifting, people wouldn’t be so weary about the cost. Then you have the customer who has money to spend on art enrichment while others want enriching art and can’t help the budget. They want as much as they can afford though. Can you blame them?
@imransadiq4149
@imransadiq4149 Жыл бұрын
There is no debate! Epoxy is difficult to work with and if you make a mistake, it will be a very expensive dilemma. The customer pays for the knowledge and experience of the craftman. It's a very niche skill. People have to pay for that, PERIOD.

You just gave a great argument why proxy tables are inferior to hand carved tables they are far better this proxy tables are a craft that can be learnt in 3 years but real craft masters don't hid their mistakes beneath plastic but keep going to perfection tbis takes decades so it justifying the labour

There's never been a beautiful slab of wood that was better for having Eproxy on it and paying people to help you ruin it don't justify the price either making epoxy tables are a cheating way of calling yourself a master craftsman I'm here in Ireland and some of the old boys who make tables would cry if they saw such sacrilege of fine wood.
@jeffmackdesigns
@jeffmackdesigns Ай бұрын
You could argue that most wood used in epoxy tables are considered trash or garbage. They're no good for milling dimensional lumber from, most end up in pieces to be burned. Epoxy can bring new life to them.
