Why are Farmers Protesting in Europe? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Farmers across Europe are protesting on board their tractors to press EU leaders to do more to help them with taxes, rising costs, and cheap imports. The European Commission proposed measures to limit agricultural imports from Ukraine and greater flexibility towards rules on fallow land in a bid to quell the anger. Will the measures be enough? Palki Sharma tells you.

I grew up in rural Australia, a little town called Gunnedah. We as a family lived on a farm growing up, although my parents were not farmers, they rented from a farmer. And then I, as an adult lived in Gunnedah for 20 years renting on a few different farms as well. I want to say all the farmers I know, are wealthy. They have big homesteads, often with multiple farms attached, as they buy out their neighbours, who have taken early retirement (10 -15 years before retirement age). They all have multiple cars, multiple kids, nice furniture, expensive toys and equipment, take expensive holidays, have an excellent lifestyle involving working for yourself and so not having to deal with workplace politics and not having to answer to other people - to an extent. Most of them have no idea how lucky and fortunate they are, compared to many other people across the world, especially as they are a tight knit community. I feel that they got to this status in life, in today’s modern times, because farmers wives, are the biggest whingers of all time, and so farmers have got some good deals and concessions from buyers /government/ communities. If anyone says anything bad about any farmers in Australia, you are quickly shut down! Farmers are well loved in this country, even though from time to time you would encounter farmers, and think these bloody hillbillies, have no bloody brain at all look (Especially when it comes to nature, conservation, tree, planting etc ), but look what they’ve managed to do, and where they’ve managed to get in society ! RICH

@leonardmayer2362
@leonardmayer2362 3 ай бұрын
There are two things the government can do to resolve farmers’s issues. First examine a full accounting of expenses and revenues of the farmers to determine how prices are affecting their business. Then propose solutions to reduce expenses for farmers. Second analyze the quantity and price of products where imports have an impact. Prices are determined by supply and demand. If there is too much of a product because of imports from Ukraine, then make prices profitable for farmers by changing the supply by exporting the excess to a country that needs it possibly from Africa. If you reduce the supply, then the market will raise prices to keep down the demand. You have to understand accounting and international commodity markets to manipulate the prices to keep the competition for the commodity high enough to make sure farmers can still make a profit worthy of their efforts.

@@jumbomuffin1316 don’t forget it was the government who stopped them even from protesting when something did not even happened. Central government barricaded roads, put nails in roads to puncture their vehicles, so don’t forget a second think centre did nothing. Central government painted them as anti India and Khalistanis from the start when there was nothing. Every protest can have violent people and they should be dealt with. But painting whole state and whole group as Khalistanis and anti India now who started this??? Problem with Indians is either they are against government or blindly follow government. We don’t see issues one by one. Sometimes government is wrong they are not saints. Their first mistake was not consulting farmers before passing laws, then they painted whole convoy as terrorists now who does that???? Let us say people are protesting now in thousands crowd there bound to be some people who will try to push their agenda but calling whole group or star terrorists who was being anti India here??? What is the job of media?? Did they presented both versions??? Did they explain what farmers say and what government say?? No they were completely behind government is this democracy?? This is the problem people who support BJP tend to think themselves as Indians or nationalists and who doesn’t agree with BJP is anti India this is the problem brother. You say attacking capital, was it an attack when government try to put nails in roads, when they stopped farmers from entering capital, was it attack when police used water canons?? Until then it was peaceful but when they try to do bring flag down I am with government here arrest them, put them in jail. But point is government did everything to damage their protest so one who think themselves as Indians can not fully defend government on every issue. When they are wrong they should be pointed out

Where is Justin Trudy now? Why not interfere in the European matters? Or is he spineless to speak about EU?

That word Ukraine again. Last time a Japanese beauty pageant. Time for a settlement not a protracted conflict and prolonged economic dislocation.

EU is doing a spread: on the one hand trying to implement environment legislation and on the other hand supporting agriculture (agrindustry) that is the most productive, as the market is becoming dominated by US and BRICS. Selfsufficiency of Europe is asking too much, but yes, we need future access to staple food and energy. So we need at least enough own production to be able to barter with our core business - industry. This can be done IF farmers are getting paid for what they produce: much when grown sustainable and less when grown industrially. EU should be Adam Smith's 'market master' and dress up a price system. They don't now because of agribusiness lobby and confusion/dividedness.
