Thinking outside the box allowing yourself to see endless opportunities for a story to be told is priceless approach. The story matters most. Technical aspects not as important if there is not to hold the audience attention.

That's so profound, just by definition a screen play can never be finished until shooting has finished. It's a screenplay. It requires captured output to be frozen in solid medium to complete its metamorphosis.

I respectfully reject your definition. If the screenwriter has done his job thoroughly then he will turn in a screenplay which is complete in every sense. All the director needs to do subsequently is realise the screenwriter's vision from the blueprint he/she has provided.

@@roathripper and once the director has done that the screenplay has completed its mission. Until then it is but a guideline.

I couldn't agree more leaving some room for magic. I shot a couple of shorts a couple years back and recall feeling like filming was boring. The magic that I saw on screen wasn't there during production. It wasn't until I "let go" of a few things that filmmaking became fun again. And he's right, in order to do that, you need to choose your collaborators wisely!

I'm very impressed with Mr. Hossain's approach to directing and screenwriting! I binged some interviews with him after this one, and can tell we agree on the importance of planning a story in advance (e.g. spending a few minutes outlining a scene *is much more valuable* than to count five additional pages to a screenplay -- those "spontaneous pages" may end up being cut later anyway). On the directing side, I hope his openness approach expands to screenwriters too! For my current work in progress, it is a requirement of mine that *(1)* the director of the movie will allow me a role in the pre-planning of the movie series, and agree with me on the overall vision for the movies, and *(2)* that the director of the movie will delegate freedom to the cast and crew of the movie to find their most authentic way to help realize the overall vision that the director and I have agreed upon. *It was very interesting to hear Mr. Hossain talking about delegating responsibility in a separate interview:* his experience is that when a director clearly communicates his vision to cast/crew and allows them freedom to realize that vision, *the movie will turn out even better than if the director were to dictate every single detail!* WOW!!! Now, THAT'S the sort of director I want to work with! 😁😁

I wouldn't say "afraid", but cautious or knowledgeable or wise are valid. Because to produce a high-concept Science Fiction picture requires a certain amount of capital to have exotic locales, costumes, sets, special effects, visual effects, production design, and a plethora of other elements involved. It's costly to create for and shoot indelibly unforgettable fantastic iconic Science Fiction pictures.

But I applaud you for championing the Science Fiction genre. More filmmakers and storytellers should tell them. But tell them Great.

Good interview. But I think the biggest problem with Hollywood is focusing on relating to the audience. It's impossible to be able to predict how any character can relate to any individual. Wouldn't it make more sense to focus on good characters and how they work within a story, not their outward appearance.

Sci-Fi is a genre that doesn't always guarantee critical or box office success, but on top of that it's a very hard genre to write and direct REALlY well. Blade Runner 2049 was a phenomenally crafted film but poor marketing led to it being a box office flop, and it'll be hard to get a Sci-Fi film of that fabric made ever again for that massive of a budget ($180M+).

Hi AJ. I appreciate your comment. I write romance/drama more than anything else (just so you know where I am coming from). One of the keys to writing good romance is to make the story about something other than romance. I feel too many sci fi movies fall into the trap of focusing on the science, the technology, the future, the whatever. Make the sci fi story about family. Make it about revenge of the innocent. Make it about corruption. Make it about something with substance to it, a theme with heart. Let technology and science just fit in the negative spaces in the story. Know what I mean?

So, "writing is difficult", but it's okay if you rock up with an unfinished script, you don't need a script! You know what's in your mind! Just make it up as you go along, it's exciting for the actors! Being competent isn't what it's about. It's about pushing your own half-baked ideas over those of your colleagues. Oh, and blag your mates for freebies, don't pay your cast and crew, tell them that working for free is a privilege. And genre is not really a thing, all visible evidence to the contrary aside. The main point of the video, according to the title? Not a thing, don't worry about it.

It is interesting seeing this in todays (2 years later) context and hearing two people saying almost the same sentence and coming to 2 different conclusions… somehow. The question, what his students want to see and the answer that they have a need to see themselves. He then tells us about how he could connect with the movies of his past although not seeing himself in the movies and then states that this was „lacking“ back then. I heard about the same story by some other filmmaker (and by the love of everything cannot remember who that was) who said that he didn‘t see himself in the movies of his past, still could connect and that therefore this trend to represent everybody in every film is somewhat… too much?! I am searching for an answer, if everybody needs to be represented, even if it doesn‘t make sense. I am disabled and tick several marginalized group boxes but mostly grew up as a white male and both camps totally make sense to me - I just wish that this wouldn‘t be a constant matter of debate but just done as the filmmaker sees fit, where some represent, some don‘t, some make it contra historical accuracy, some don‘t - but everybody just makes good movies and shows. But this was totally off topic and I am sorry. It was amazing to hear about his filmmaking method of spending as little money as possible and therefor maximize the artistic freedom and maybe even the quality of the film itself. I just make a scifi short myself and hope I achieve something similar. At least I got no money to spend… it is a start! 😅😂

Unless of course you are Jean-Luc Godard then you can pull off making a good Science Fiction picture with very little capital or like he did on a shoestring budget for the picture ALPHAVILLE (1965). I recommend reading the book TCM Must See SCI-FI 50 MOVIES THAT ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD by Sloan De Forest and forwarded by Roger Corman. Valuable read.
