LEARN POST PRODUCTION
You’re just catching your breath from a demanding shoot. You’re on your last legs but you did it; you got everything you needed in the can. It’s time for post production.
POST PRODUCTION 101
The first step in post-production is picture editing. This is where the footage is placed together in a deliberate order, and it is completed by an editor. The editor is aided by an assistant editor (or multiple assistant editors) who helps organize footage. The editor will work through the cut in stages - first the assembly, then the rough cut, the fine cut, and finally, the final cut.
ADDITIONAL VISUALS IN THE POST PRODUCTION WORKFLOW
Nowadays, there is often visual effects work to be done. This isn’t relegated to just sci-fi and fantasy projects; VFX are all over almost every movie and TV show today. The process is overseen by the VFX supervisor.
Next up is coloring which is conducted by the colorist, who typically works very closely with the cinematographer and director to get footage looking right. A colorist has two primary jobs. First, they color correct, then there’s color grading, where the coloring can become more stylized.
AUDIO POST PRODUCTION PROCESS WORKFLOW IN FILM
Sound is overseen by the supervising sound editor. First is sound editing, where all the sounds are put in place. There’s also music, which has a team including a composer, music supervisor, music editor, and more. Once all the sounds are recorded and in place, it all needs to be mixed together by the re-recording mixer.
As you can see, there’s a lot of work that goes into post-production, and it can be a lengthy process involving hundreds of people. But it’s worth putting the time and money into it. Post-production makes or breaks a movie.

This was impressive. A balance of broad overview and some very important details. I was surprised to hear you mentioning conforming ( Color Grading process) and Compression ( Sound Editing). When you start hitting on stuff like that without getting into the weeds. You are really hitting on some important details that will provide the members of the audience who aren't familiar with these aspects of the process, the information they need to begin to take a deeper dive if they want to.

I've always loved the technical details of filmmaking, but it's been years since I've been crewed on an actual set (and even when I was, it was small-time video production, not films). I love that you've included both the old and the modern techniques in this video. It helps an old-timer like me stay up to date on the industry. Any plans to do more in-depth videos about editing? That was one of my favorite areas.

An interesting aspect maybe for episode 2 could be how to combine all the exports of all these departments together (conforms). This is quite condensed. Quite the feat to cram it in to 20 minutes. Each section could be an hour long and it would be diffucult to cover most aspects well. I'm from the sound side of the production and post production fields. The Foley section was a little short, as the artists and mixers often produce sounds even editors will struggle to cobble together. Perhaps you should have quoted a few lines from David Yewdalls book :) . Lots of juicy ones to pick from. Book recommendations "Practical Art of Motion Picture Sound" David Lewis Yewdall , "Dialogue Editing for Motion Picture" by John Purcel , "Foley Grail" by Vanessa Theme Ament. There's probably way more by now too.

ln regards to sound design, they really need to sort out differences in levels between music soundtrack and spoken lines. lve lost count in how many productions lve viewed that require turning volume down with sound fx & soundtrack then having to turn volume up to hear dialogue. Offline refers to using proxy files, which are smaller, lower quality versions of the originals. This is done both to take up less space and for better performance when editing. Online refers to using the original high quality files, which is crucial for color grading and VFX.

You guys should really put energy into fixing all the bugs in your software instead of making social media vids. Is 2018 really the last time you updated the software?

@@StudioBinderaccepting dual dialog in a fdx (it currently just deletes that dialog without even alerting you), and having undo when editing scripts would be nice.

So it's the mixing part that's responsible for the fucked up dialogue-explosion sound balance in modern movies.

I think even by the end of the 90's movies moved to digital postproduction even though production and screening were still film. What was interesting about Oppenheimer is that after the movie was digitally edited, they went back and cut the internegatives or interpositives together to match the digital version and made the release prints optically from those. A callback to the days when the whole process was analog.

I disagree with your definitions. CGI doesn’t mean totally created in computer. It means aspects of the shot are computer generated. It can be used in composite shots and mocap shots. Definitions like this are why films like Top Gun can claim to use 'no cgi' when 99% of a captured shot is replaced by digital creations.

A shot can have parts of it made with CGI. But that still makes CGI computer generated imagery no?
