What I'm saying is that you can wear fancy suit with a tie, be clean shaven with a nice haircut, be impeccably polite etc. but if you can't solve the customer's problem they won't be happy. On the other hand you can have long hair, a scraggly beard, be socially awkward and even a little smelly, but, if you solve the customer's problem they are happy. Yes, you can be both a snappy dresser and a good tech but in my experience customers don't care. They just need it fixed. I work in a repair franchise and somehow have managed to actually get good at the repairs we do. Then again, I avoid taking in repairs that I know are risky. I get paid $1 over minimum wage and I’ve been working there for almost 2 years. I’ve basically been running the shop myself for these 2 years because the store owner views it as a source of “passive income” and yet refuses to even give me the title of manager, let alone a pay raise. And no, I did not receive any training. I had to train myself.

Personally, I like small mom and pop repair places. Maybe its where I live but I've had some amazing experiences. I used to bring my car into the big retail chains and while I don't know too much I know they would occasionally lie to me and sometimes my car would come back worse off and I would have to bring it back again. One day my car broke down near this run down hole in the wall in the middle of nowhere. Not only did the guy do an amazing job but he started fixing other random things in my car for free. I asked him how much I owed him for the random things he was touching up and he said it wasn't a big deal and I could just give him a tip if I wanted and he had a sealed can for dropping money so I didn't feel pressured (I gave him a nice tip but it was probably still much less than most franchises would have actually charged). My car worked fantastic after I left. Another time my tires popped late at night and the AAA tow-truck dropped me off at a tire repair place. Again it was a little no name place. In the morning I show up and it turns out that they don't do tires. So the guy drives me to a tire repair place, tells me which tires to buy, loads them up and fixes my car for free (again I tipped his guys, but they didn't even ask). I had the same experience with computers. Customer service though the companies and manufacturers has always been substandard. Once my computer stopped working and I brought it into a large franchise and they quoted me a price but when I came back they said their were far more problems and it would cost a lot more money, it can happen but its irritating. I've had other bad experiences as well. One time I just didn't feel like driving to a repair place so I saw this tiny add in the yellow pages (back when that was a thing) saying that this tiny company would do home repairs. They came out and the tech worked on it. She was very knowledgeable and I asked her several questions to learn more and she taught me while she worked. There was a problem towards the end that she couldn't fix and she said they were going to have to take it back to the shop. I had seen her work so I knew it wasn't a scam. So a day goes by and they call me to pick it up. I drive to their shop and it was again a run down piece of junk that looked more like a drug den than a retail shop. The store was so ugly that even though I had a great experience with the tech I though they might claim that they never had my computer and steal it or maybe take out some ram or something. I asked them how much it was going to cost and they said that I already paid for the hour of service, it wasn't my fault that they couldn't fix the problem and there was no extra charge. This seemed odd and I wondered if there was some kind of scam but I took the pc home and it worked fantastic. Over the years me and my family and friends have used these people for all of our computer problems and they have always been amazing. In fact we've frequently tried to call to set up an appointment only for the guy over the phone (the owner) to almost refuse, he'll generally always try to tell us how to fix the problem ourselves FOR FREE. And his explanations and diagnosis are top notch. I've called up manufacturers when products are under warranty for help and the experience is often subpar at best, then I call this guy and he tells me how to fix it immediately. I'm actually at the point where I try my best not to call them and simply drive my computer to them because I feel so damn guilty about all the free service they've given me and my family. I've been using them for almost 20 years and they still have the same 2 employees, but at least they are still in business (and yes I've tried tipping but they refuse so I just give them a bill larger than they have change for and I say its not a problem just keep the rest). He's actually taught me so much over the years that I almost don't really need them, I just use them because its often easier for me to have them fix it than bother doing it myself. I've had similar experiences with dentists and other businesses as well (big fancy franchises=substandard experiences, small run down private enterprises=fantastic experiences). These small businesses will never become franchises, they have terrible business practices (from the prospective of making a profit) but they started their businesses because they were passionate about the subject not because they thought it was a way to make a quick buck. Now I'm not saying that every mom and pop is going to deliver such an amazing experience, I'm sure some are scams but I've had nothing but positive experiences.

I have been working as a freelance IT support tech for the last 7 years in my home town of Varna in Bulgaria. I deal mostly with PC's and android smartphones. I have never done a board repair to a computer at the level that you do (not for not wanting to, more like no access to parts and proper equipment). My clients have never had any problems with paying me what I ask for, because they usually end up using my services after they have had to bring their PC/Laptop/Smartphone several times for regular maintenance and/or OS reinstall in a span of a year and it still doesn't work properly. I charge an obscene amount based on the standard in Bulgaria. A shop normally charges 50 Bulgarian levs ($29.11) for a OS install and 80 Bulgarian levs ($46.57) for a cleanup I charge 200 Bulgarian levs ($116.42) for both and they are happy to pay it, because a machine that I have cleaned and set usually can work without any problems for around 3-4 years (millage may vary based on usage, but my business clients go that long before calling me again). Because Apple products somehow are becoming more popular in Bulgaria, although the starting price of a MacBook is around 5000 Bulgarian levs ( $2910.61), I have started learning from your videos, so I can do an even better job. And in all 7 years I have enjoyed every bloody second I have spent tinkering with a machine. I love it, I love learning what makes it tick. Keep in mind that my education is a Master Degree in Law and me fixing computers started as a hobby, that I am trying to turn into my job now, because I don't wanna deal with legal stupidity. We were trained that if it is a motherboard issue we contact out specialized team that our owner put together that is only motherboard repairs. We take it to them because we know we don't have the skills to do something specialized like this. With that model that our owner setup, we have never had an issue with motherboard repairs for MacBooks and other repairs that they specialize in. I just feel bad that some franchises make other franchises look bad. I'll be the first one to admit that there's no way I could attempt a repair like that and would rather send it to our team that could do it, just so the customer's device is taken care of properly.

I worked for independent, franchise and company owned shops from 1979 to 2001 and military before that. The 500 company owned shop was one of ~24 at the time. The only difference was the company owned shops had more resources. There were the bad indies, franchisees and company owned shops in my time as well. My company owned shop had an active QC program before there was the instantaneous POS (Point Of Sale) system. We lost a few techs due to poor performance with the QC program. We were commission driven and got the job done with a good turnaround and low redo rates. Then the POS came online and things went downhill. The district managers had hourly updates of the units flow and this system was abused. The shop manager was a tech at the beginning then they trained clerks to manage the shops. The district managers were micromanaging the shops in his charge. The shop managers felt like glorified clerks. Me and 2 other techs were consistently making a higher wage than our manager! We went through a lot of managers before the company closed down most of their repair centers, including mine. That company is now in Chapter 11.

It really depends but a lot of franchises are owned mainly for monetary purposes. What I have seen going from corporate to franchise is a cut in pay for new employees and practices leading to lawsuits, reduced resources, a drive for quantity over quality, complete restriction of middle management, a lot of turnover, and just about everything to try and reduce customer satisfaction from upper management. A ton of people, not all of them, treat franchises like they are the bank or Microsoft. Passion and the drive for quality go out the window. hahahaha, I had to fix a ubreakifix 6 plus that they LSD the top right screw hole and gave it a red screen of death/grounded all the circuits below the mount. THEY DIDN'T EVEN THINK TO REMOVE THE MOUNT EVEN THOUGH IT BROKE OFF INTO THE EMI SHIELD!! What an expensive joke.

Turns out the company I currently work for is getting in bed with UBIF. I hate my life. Please save me from this hell, Louis! I know how to use kapton tape so the DC-in port doesn't get melted when working around it. I can also use my brain and my eyes to check for blindingly obvious corrosion before replacing a handful of ICs that have nothing to do with the problem!

As an 18 year old stoner who started his business at FIFTEEN, I'm offended to be compared to a mall franchise. Even I have higher quality standards for my work. SMH
@giovannip.14336 жыл бұрын
The problem with franchises is that the franchise owners make money by selling the 'idea' of a business, not the actual 'doing' of a business. The franchiser sells the franchise to someone for hundreds of thousands of dollars convincing the purchaser that 'with these Nike shoes you will run 20% faster and everyone will want to be your friend'... What do Nike shoes have to do with 'The Franchise'? Absolutely nothing- but it does sell another franchise. It's basically subcontracting yourself to the franchiser who has no responsibility in your activity because you sign the contract...

People who buy tech franchises are looking for cash cows. Something easy they can start at a low cost and sit back watching money come in. At least that's what they think. They don't have the slightest idea about the industry. and it's why franchises always have such low ratings.

Used to work for UBIF along with other repair places. Didn't get paid shit for my work, and I did excellent work. Most of the techs had less than a year of experience and were doing really heavy repairs that they shouldn't have been allowed to do. I realized that my tech skills were more valuable when I looked at the (fully open to employees) sales numbers I had made UBIF $12,000 in the first month... And they paid me less than $2000 for that month. Started doing repairs on my own. Made $4000 a month the first month. UBIF is AIDS

@@rossbasham4280 Ross Basham This is actually the best comment from a UBIF employee I could imagine though, it truly shows how ignorant you are. So many holes and where to begin? you can't find the name of me in your database... First of all, as a database student, I can assure you that it's horrifying for you (not being an executive employee) to have access to a database that would include such records. Second, again, I don't use my real name on KZbin. Third, you sound like you've been in retail your whole life with the 'history of jumping around' thing. If you knew the first thing about the IT industry, you'd know that the vast majority of jobs within the industry have some of the highest turnover rates, and for good reason, point blank, if you aren't moving around, you aren't moving up. Also what makes you think you could judge my quality of work by how frequently I moved around? Thats just stupid. You keep doing you dude. I'm getting a degree in software engineering and database as well as a certificate in information security and I'll be glad to see you doing the same shit day in and day out in a few years while I write software that UBIF couldn't afford if they wanted too.

Honestly, I feel like most of this is the lack of proper tools. My guess is most of these business do not have micro soldering tools and obviously the training to use it. I wish they wouldn't ever get a 'certified repair' when they clearly aren't.

I sent in my Microsoft surface like a week ago for the 3RD TIME! After watching this video I regret sending it in and i paid so much for the repair and i lost hope in my laptop. Its been almost 2 months since the first time and i have no chance of getting my money back or having a properly working laptop after a month if they cant fix it this time. They kept delaying me and not explaining what was wrong with my laptop properly I ended up confused and mad! I just wanted my laptop fixed dang!

Just cleaning all component but didnt clean fan also heatsink. Then several weeks, what happen? Then bring back and say oh youre extreme user. Then replace with used component, but charge as new component.

Another thing with franchises is they usually have customer service staff who take the complaints from people pissed off with the standard of work so the "techs" don't have to deal with that shit, where as a shop like yours you're the one who has to deal with said people and we all know what a pain some people can be when they're unhappy.

It's utterly, UTTERLY impossible to do such horrible soldering work using a hot air soldering station and solder past as it is supposed to be done when putting resistors. The practical upshot is that they've probably used a cheap unregulated soldering iron instead.

I had ubreakifix replace the battery in my Nexus 6p and they mangled the plastic cover on the back of the phone and all the plastic around the screen on the front. I could have spent the same amount of money buying the parts and tools to do it if I had known they were just going to mangle it.

one company requires a+ cert but only pays 13 dollar and hour to tech. and you have to fallow a checklist, even if you could see the problem (broken off usb port) another company knew that there was a problem with their software causing memory overflows and cpu over heating but disabling this would severely cut back on battery life the fix to customer ne motherboard. so folks wonder why some items keep going back to repair or do not seem fixed..
