China also grew faster because most students HAVE to return home. Many students file a condition with the govt that after a time abroad they must come back home, else the govt would take their family's lands. Plus, taking your research back home to give to the Chinese Govt is a lucrative way to make a life in China. Not to mention, Chinese govt has their own less than ideal methods of promoting growth at the cost of kicking entire villagers out of their homes, demolishing the buildings and giving them to construction companies where the same villagers will now be forced to pay rent to live in.

Reasons: 1. Language - Indians are far more proficient in the English language than the Chinese are. 2. Entrepreneurship - higher percentage of Chinese choosing entrepreneurship soon after graduation than being employees 3. Home country appeal - better opportunities beckoning in China. 4. American establishment preference for Indians over Chinese - there’s geopolitical baggage. Conclusion: It is what it is but I wouldn’t worry about it. It doesn’t mean that one group is doing better than the other but rather that one group is more visible in America than the other.

@@AS-ug2vq No. This is related to history and culture. 1. India is multi-ethnic and multi-religious - meaning we are ready to adopt and co-operate (forget 1947 separation for a moment) 2. China was always secluded from the rest of the World. India was always an immigration hub of British and other Europeans, Arabs, Persians, Turks, Tibetan, Afghans, etc. Our languages have heavy foreign influence - which shows we were always integrated to the rest of the world.

I think he is being hard on his Chinese compatriots. They have developed China in a way that Indians have not. Hopefully now attitudes are changing for the betterment of India. Also Indians grow up with speaking English or at the very least, they know the language exists somewhere. This is not the case for Chinese. Finally, I think Indians have a different attitude that make them better or far more superior managers. They understand people and try to do a give and take. An indian employer may keep a space for you in his company if you want to go and look after your family for a year or more. The understanding is that you don't get paid. But if you come back and the company is still doing well and we have a space, we will take you. The chinese or white employer do not handle people in this diplomatic way. so offcourse they will be less popular as head of any organisation! In short, Indians manage to keep their humanity but the others deny it! And everybody else including themselves suffer!

I have worked in Silicon Valley for decades as an American. I have Indian and Chinese friends in the tech industry. One thing that I have observed is that Indians are more interested in management roles. Chinese are more interested in being the model employee. Indians also have a head start on the language - English. So it's easier for the educated ones to adopt quickly.

American here. I never thought about the points made by the guy in this video, but he's probably right. I've personally seen Indians work hard at their English speaking skills in various public speaker associations such as Toastmasters. My Indian colleagues join in casual conversations at work just like any other American does. Mark Cuban said that in the near future Liberal Arts majors would be highly valued at tech companies because of their communication skills. Good video

Good one on the Toastmasters observation. My mother related to me that situation in her club. She said that one indian guy was so nervous speaking that when he finished he looked like a bucket of water had been poured on him. But he never gave quit and improved greatly. As others have posted, India being part of the anglo-sphere is a head start. And more round-aboutly, every chinese person that I have known, if not a communist, has the opinion that the Cultural Revolution was an epic moral and spiritual disaster for the Chinese. The Cultural Revolution destroyed the ideal of public trust.

I am an Indian in US and I have worked with several Chinese nationals in the past and continue to work with them now. I have always felt that my Chinese colleagues were more detail oriented, very hard working, never took short cuts and were always very humble in their approach towards others. The only thing that kept them from growing faster was their communication. If they overcome this problem they will be equally or may be even more successful than Indians in US.

The Chinese are on the right track pursuing Entrepreneurship model of career as opposed to the Employment model. That is why China has its own big tech and India is playing catchup. Employment career model is great for learning and raising capital but you can only get rich and make impact through entrepreneurship.

Great topic to discuss. My personal view here in the hope it will help someone. The reasons I agree: 1. English proficiency 2. Able to relate to American culture and create relationships. Reasons you missed: 1. Confidence. Many Chinese candidates I work with are reserved, afraid to speak their minds even when they are right. When they do speak out, they double guess. Reasons I don't know: 1. Indians also have the habit of hanging out with only Indians (if they have a choice (i.e larger companies with more Indians) , they will only hangout with the folks from their Indian state) So I am not so sure about Indian university students 'buddy up' better than Chinese. My knowledge of American culture and ability to relate comes just from exposure to American TV SHOWS, movies and other media. For curious people: My wife (from mainland China) and I (India) discussed this at length. I have been in leadership roles in the USA for many years and interviewed and hired many people). I have also lived in Singapore and other parts of Asia for number of years.

For most Indians in America, returning to India is not an option, because we don't have cities like Shanghai or Shenzhen, where you can continue to live a first world lifestyle. Indian cities like Mumbai or Bangalore are improving, but are still far behind western cities. Chinese on the other hand don't miss America as much if they move back to advanced Chinese cities.

That is because you're ignorant, India didn't invaded China in 1962 but China did. I agree that people of China might not have ill intent for Indian people and Vice versa. But you can't say the same for Chinese govt. China as a policy cultivated relationship with Pakistan since 1950's and supplied it with nuclear technology just to keep India busy with Pakistan. China also sponsored maoist in India and created a corridor throughout eastern India and also let's not forget strings of pearl's policy of the Chinese government and salami slicing of border areas in India. Inshort Chinese govt don't operate in good faith towards India and India reciprocates in kind to the best of it's abilities. So don't ever think the rise of China will be good for India. I also appreciate and am in awe of Chinese culture and can relate more with their societal quirks than of western societies. I am from a South East Asian country in the region close to Singapore where there is ethnic diversity like the USA. There are sizeable Chinese and Indians in this country. Some of your general observations are correct. The Indians adapt well in any country not because they speak English better. They speak Malay equally well unlike the Chinese in the same country. The Chinese tend to be clannish. However, there is a general perception here that the Indians are very good talkers and they do very well especially in Western organizations where English is the main business language and opinions are valued. The Chinese are regarded as good workers but tend to be reserved and less vocal. However, the Chinese are seen as entrepreneurs and shrewd in business. The majority of the millionaires here are Chinese. The Indians are mostly lawyers and doctors. High intelligence occupations. Despite mutual prejudices they work well together. Given a chance I am sure India and China can get along too.

And foreign funding wasn't going towards hyper growth startups, it was going towards boring tech companies, and financial instruments. Past 5 years, India's entrepreneur started getting a lot more ambitious, and have been succeeding. Soon Paytm (and similar companies) will start lending larger loans, and will make it easier for more Indians to access credit. What that means on a larger scale, is small businesses have access to customers who are able to pay, and that will lead to expansion, job creation, more customers due to those jobs, and so on... It won't be that smooth of a sailing obviously, but as a person who is extremely interested in economics, I see signs that indicate beginning of hyper growth. Very well-spoken. Everything you said from 3:20 to 4:03 is very true, and I especially saw that when I was in college. Indian international students already have pretty good English, but I think their outgoing behavior helps them definitely improve their communication skills. This eventually comes true in the workplace too, where it's not just about being able to code but also about being likeable. I used to work at a well-known company in WA and now work at a well-known company in CA, and this is something that is still true. I have relatives who came to the US from China in the 80's. They said they did the same thing when they were in college, only hanging out with other Chinese international students, and they notice it still happening today. It's great for growing a community, but it might not be good for personal growth and development.

Getting mastery over English is not a big deal. I myself have done my primary education in my mother tongue. But I can communicate fluently in English as well. But in India, it has become an obsession to put your kids in English medium schools from early childhood. As a result, they cannot even read in their own language. China has chosen the tougher path. Maybe you guys need to focus more on English through the college. But at least you have chosen to respect and preserve your own language.

@@vibhavdeshpande8196 Same. English as a language is good for science and technology or for material things but not for social aspects since it's a very divisive language. It is much better to build the base in your mother tongue and rooted in Indian civilizational heritage/culture so you can recognize the toxic concepts or ideas later on since our cultural philosophies don't believe in exclusivity the language also promotes that by not having toxic labels. We don't have the construct of religion in our languages for example which is a new and western concept. So spiritual and pluralistic view is natural, especially when you know the history. It is also very easy to switch to English afterwards. I did it in international school during high school without much help from school - first two years were grilling since I didn't understand the language so all subjects suffered and I worked my ass off but became good within 2 years, and extremely fluent afterwards. But that is while my school structure was Cambridge board which presumed everyone is on the same level of English and I had almost no working knowledge of the language beforehand. That is not the condition today and you can learn the basics of the language as a subject in primary schooling before switching the medium later on and there would be almost no issue. It would not only preserve the diversity of languages but also thoughts since there are many terms/words which are misappropriated by using English terms that don't even have the same concepts in its dictionary. This is how you lose and corrupt knowledge through linguistics over time.

Lots of diverse opinions, so let me throw in one that I don't see expressed by anyone, not even by Yusen Zhang (the maker of this video): The Chinese government was clear about its reasons for sending its students here: to pick up new knowledge that they would then apply to problems in China. That means that the *expectation* was that they would go back to China. There was no such centrally driven government effort by India. Indians coming here are a result of their own *individual* efforts and desires. And the results are there to see, China has grown its economy due to its differing approach in a way that India failed to. Thus Chinese *have* something to go back to, so they do. Indians *don't* have something better to go back to, so they stay here. Coupled with the additional factors like being more comfortable with English, etc, that means they integrate better here than the Chinese do. Therefore they succeed here in a way that the Chinese don't. (Full disclosure: I am one of those Indians that I speak about)

I think in many cases, if you look at the history of Chinese immigration to the US, it was much more historical than India. The Chinese immigrants in the past were treated more like slaves and worked hard. They then remained more introverted as they were discriminated. Indians only went to the US in the 70's and 80's. Nowadays the Chinese community come generally to the West to study, then return to China, as there are incentives for the Chinese to return. Indians move over to a new country and make that their home, and become part of that culture and way of life. The introvert behavior could be because of language, but I do not think so, it is more of a traditional closeness that China retains in a way that wherever you go to trade it is for the country. Indians do not look at the world this way. It is more about self. Yes they love India and want it to succeed ,but our home is where we make it.

In india we are forced to do hardwork from school only.. But the opportunity level in india is so low that the hardwork doesn't work but in US there are so many opportunities.. That makes us rise more than any other person:)

One of the reasons Indian are successful in the rest of the world, especially the USA, is because there is less prejudice & more acceptance for smart, clever people. If these clever people had stayed in India, it is doubtful if they could have reached these dizzy heights. Corruption & nepotism is endemic & rife in India.

It also has to do with the fact that China is growing much faster than India and most Chinese students go home, while Indians would stay in the US and integrate. Also the relative isolation that exists between China and the rest of the world due to the Great Firewall means that there is simply more space to go to China and build something there and enjoy the protection.

Indians are more successful in America because they have the "better English" advantage. But this is a double edged sword. While many Chinese have returned to China to build a robust manufacturing, IT and service sector (many have founded their own companies), Indians tend to stay on in America. This has made India suffer in the long run because we are not able to capitalize on our bright minds who have migrated abroad, while the Chinese have been able to do so.

Indians have better opportunities literally everywhere else besides India which is why they they emigrate. I'm from Indonesia where a middle class ethnic Indian became one of the richest Indonesian overnight by developing a ride sharing service. I have never seen a single poor ethnic Indian in Indonesia.

Actually Indians speaking good English is simply because of our educational structure where we are taught all subjects in English right from our Junior school level. (bcz obviosly we have so many languages nd we need one common one to communicate).

As an Indian, I can say this language barrier is actually an advantage for China as it reduces the significant brain drain. And I think most of the smart Chinese people tend to return to home land to be an entrepreneurs. Which is really a good thing for China. Looking at China's growth I can say language isn't a barrier unless you want to settle outside of your country.

Despite indian more fluent in speaking english.. i think american people see the dark color of indian skin virtually have similiarity to black american than yellow chinese.. so this make them more easy to mingle.. and somehow i think white american who 'hegemonize' the job's level seeing chinese/east asian as a threat.

Most Chinese have the opportunity to go back and build their business in HongKong, Singapore or China. But Indians usually will settle or visit on tourist. I was born and raised in India, married to an Australian. we speak English and Hindi language equally. Also India had Mughal rules and British rule. Religion also play a big role in our lives, , no matter what culture or religion you fall in. You also experience better variety of foods, including vegetarian. I like Perth, people are so relaxed and friendly

When you see successful Indians in USA, just understand, they are contributing to mostly American GDP, not Indian... But again, it's their own choice, they are free. Best thing is Indian-Americans are helping India to rebuild its image.... And finally, English is not a choice for us it's a necessity... We have 22 official languages. You touched on many solid points, but I also think part of the reason why Chinese Americans are not as successful as other immigrant groups is because Chinese Americans had a pretty rough history in the US. Many of the Chinatowns in the US are kind of ghetto, such as the ones in LA, SF and NY. The Chinese in America were a historically oppressed group. Chinese immigrants lived in the US as early as the 19th Century and they worked under abusive labor conditions during the construction of the Central Pacific Railroad and California Gold Rush. Many early Chinese immigrants have also suffered from discrimination because of the "yellow peril" rhetoric being very prevalent during that time. It could very well be possible that the bad experiences of the earliest Chinese migrants left behind a bad legacy that further discouraged future Chinese immigrants from assimilating into the broader American culture. There are also many Chinese gangs in the US such as the Black Dragons, Flying Dragons, Wah Ching, Ghost Shadows and so on, but I haven't heard of any notorious Indian gangs in the US. The Chinese gangs in the US were known for being one of the most dangerous gangs in the country. China Mac is a famous Chinese American rapper who lived a tough life on the streets of Chinatown and he was a gang member. However, Chinese Americans are still doing relatively very well in the US compared to other immigrant groups when you consider the dark history of Chinese migrants settling in the US. It's just that I think their rough start in the US might have slightly held them back. I couldn't find that much information about the early history of Indians migrating to America, but I heard that the Chinese migrants outnumbered the Indian migrants during the 19th Century.
