Not justifying pricing in SA, but just to add something that was missed out, prices displayed in the US never included what they call "Sales Tax". The Sales Tax differs from state to state and is added upon check out. Additionally, SA has high import duties and there's VAT which is pretty high compared to most nations around the world. I also know that shipping costs to SA is higher in comparison to the EU and US. Most trade routes are from East to West. With higher volumes, costs are significantly reduced. I once was doing research on starting a business to resale goods from Asia to SA and I also had the US and UK in mind as potential markets. Shipping costs to the US and UK per unit was about 4-6 USD, now shipping to SA was quoted between 12 to 20 USD depending on carriers. So in the case of Samsung, they would have to take a margin cut to be market leaders in the SA.
@georgemunyoroАй бұрын
@@blacksands93 Yeah it's odd that it wasn't mentioned that US pricing doesn't include tax. It's a very important point. But even including sales tax though our pricing is still egregious. California sales tax, the highest of the 50 states, is 7.25%. So the base iPhone 15 would cost USD750 (R13,400), despite being advertised at an MSRP of USD700. American companies also have an odd habit of not adjusting European pricing correctly, e.g. the base iPhone 15 is 700GBP (R16,340) in the UK, and EUR850 (16,750) in Germany, an EU member state. Even with import tax taken into account, Europeans are also being grossly overcharged. Combined with the fact that Core Group imports our Apple devices from the UK, it's easy to see how we end up with the bank-breaking prices that we do, with the same aforementioned base iPhone 15 costing R19,000 here from the iStore, which is EUR964, GBP813, and USD1064 at current rates. At that price, Americans can buy the latest iPhone 16 Pro, the pro model of a whole new generation, it's insane. TL;DR: base iPhone 15 is ~R13,400 in the US, R16,340 in the UK, ~R16,750 for EU member states, and R19,000 here. Yikes!

Fully agree with what you saying even if we include the around 25% import tax and levies adding the 15% VAT, which is a total of around 40% the price still should be around R25 000 so Core Group adding a markup of around R7000

Well done, a very good video! It’s definitely giving me pause on whether I want to buy the new iPhone 16 Pro Max 🤔

I wish Apple could just officially come to SA, the iStore and The Core Group are just taking a piss honestly.

You don't understand phones, the CPU in Samsung is not SNAPDRAGON IN SOUTH AFRICA. it's EXYNOS(slower) and the RAM and type of "SSD" can be same size but not the same generation (less performance). Samsung sells cheaper in U.S because people overlook it since everyone there wants to use the same messaging app(iMessage). Google pixel doesn't even sell here, which also shows you that Apple/Google don't care about the South African market at this time(last 7 years) this applies to laptops, cars, etc, these companies wanna do good business(ruthless pursuit of profit)

Uhm actually the S24 ULTRA does come with snapdragon instead of exynos its only the other models

I used to promote cellphones for years actually. From the treo 650, HTC diamond, Nokia N96, e90 and even the iPhone. Most of my university days I was a phone promoter. I know a whole lot about phones

@@UhuruUhuru at 3:317 u said the difference is about R5 000 The iPhone is leaps ahead when it is pitted against s24 ultra(Snapdragon)in reviews that I've seen especially in the camera department(colour accuracy, sensor shift technology, lidar for portrait videos) considers other factors the 5k is reasonable

I once did a conversion for the studio display(apple monitor). In the USA, it was 1.6k usd, converted to rands thats around 30k. In south Africa, it didnt go for less than 60k for a whole year after the release date. Even now its still R50k and they refuse to go down 😂, the difference is too huge

The saddest part is that in the us and uk the S24 ultra is more expensive than the iPhone 15 and the 16 pro max

I was watching a short video somewhere and in it the guy said you can fly to New York, buy a brand new iPhone and return to South Africa and it would still be cheaper than buying an iPhone in South Africa! That's insane.

As with many imported products we have many low value add companies adding high margins to support their avaricious lifestyles. They hide behind exchange rate , but remarkably don't drop the price when rate improves.
@MveloNАй бұрын
The reason the prices are different is because we don't have Apple owned istores we have Apple retail stores and they are not under Apple that's why the prices are so high and customs duty for luxury items is way higher

Not gonna make a huge difference, but the advertised US iPhone prices don’t include VAT, which customers will have to pay in addition to the advertised price.

Are South African prices being regulated, and is there a system in place that regulates prices. Do we have price commissions. Or an act that is put in place if consumers are being overcharged. Pls educate me
