All I know is that Howard deserves this revenge from Jimmy 100% Howard saying he needs help, after for so many years he was a lapdog to Chuck, is just fake. Even if he doesn't realize it, but concern coming from Howard for Jimmy is extremely virtuous. He should have had concern for Jimmy when he didn't hire him because of Chuck. Maybe this is why Kim is so pissed. Howard has done nothing but play into Chuck's evil sabotage, and Kim proper hates Chuck given to how she reacts to the tape confrontation in Chuck's house, and now Howard is the one telling her that Jimmy needs help. There were many opportunities to help Jimmy, and Howard blocked ALL OF THEM, along with Chuck. And now he wants to play the nice, concerned, good guy?? like stfu Howard pls. Is probably what Kim is thinking

After Chuck died he was depressed and the firm was in dire straits. Jimmy gave him the kick he needed and after the time skip it's doing some of it's best business ever. I’m going to disagree that Howard is not remarkable. The level of loyalty he showed to Chuck is remarkable. The vast majority of people in Howard situation, presented with a partner that could no longer be able to fulfill his duties, would have pushed him out. Written a fat check and washed hands his of him. But that’s not what Howard did. He did everything he could to look after him, fulfill his every need, in the vain hope that one day he would get better and return to the company. Howard is remarkable. yes but that doesnt explain why kim is so desperate for howards demise to the point where shed rather ruin howard than accept cliffords offer by skipping the meeting. additionally, jimmy appears to feel remorse unlike kim for howard, something we dont see often. at the hotel, jimmy seemed like he wanted to pull back and was questioning the morality of it all meanwhile kim was eager and very ready to ruin howard. same thing with the kettlemans, jimmy didnt want to use kims method of blackmail and was trying to convince them with 'the carrot'. kim on the other hand had no hesitation to use 'the stick' as soon as she saw that jimmys plan was failing. this whole howard situation is not so much about jimmy, but more about kim as we see from the flashbacks. i still do agree that jimmy was a bit of an ass towards howard and does have something to do with whatever the two are doing but we wont know till next episode. i am so ready for this mid-season finale and to finally see the culmination of the last 6 episodes.

I have a bit of experience working in a 'prestige' law firm like HHM. For the commenters that say Howard is unremarkable, imo, this is what makes this character ring so *true* -- a partner at a prestige law firm doesn't need to have a "brilliant" legal mind, he or she just needs to be very capable, thorough, responsive, and have a confident way of dealing with high-value clients. As we evaluate Kim and Jimmy's actions, I don't think the creators of BCS intended Howard's qualities as a lawyer to be a factor in assessing those actions. He's human: he's gonna have his blind spots -- but beyond that, he's a fairly decent guy, all things considered.
@sappho1142 жыл бұрын
I'm a big Howard Hamlin fan still, tbh. Patrick Fabian brings such a genuine charisma to the character that when Howard says he's trying to do the right thing - and make amends - I wholeheartedly believe it. Jimmy's backtalk and rebuttal and misdirected rage at someone who could've bonded over losing a complex touchstone like Chuck seems karmic enough as of S6. Anything more at this point just feels cruel. I feel like Kim has a much more substantial beef with Howard, but also Howard's main weakness was trusting Chuck, and following his lead. I mean, he's not a sparkly clean angel but as a man he's doing more to better himself than anyone else in the story. I also know that Kim is capable enough - and smart enough - to have settled her beef like an adult. Or a complicated civil lawsuit, if she wanted her pound of flesh. Pretty sure she could've hurt HHM's reputation pretty soundly by airing all that dirty laundry, or by threatening to.

Howard is a good guy for sure. But the biggest mistake from Howard and Jimmy is not having Chuck committed. Given Chuck's "condition" it was more than completely justified. In that sense it was an act of selfishness to not do so. And maybe Chuck would have gotten better and the end result would have been far better for all. He and Chuck had the longest friendship, so it's good that he didn't start taking other people's words or siding with others over Chuck. Howard didn't know how bad of a brother and human being Chuck was to Jimmy behind the scenes, and it could be seen as respectful for him to have not pried into what he assumed were family matters. Finally, while he had a great deal of respect for his long friendship with Chuck, Howard was never blinded by this to the point where he wouldn't listen to reason. Howard respected Chuck more than anybody in the show, but even he knew when to take a step back out of concern for his friend's mental wellbeing, despite ultimately severing ties with him in the end.

For me, the hate for Howard revolves around one of the messages the show conveys, “People don’t change”. The show doesn’t follow this message in a traditional sense it’s more like others won’t see you for who you are now, they’ll see you as you once were, “You’re Slippin Jimmy”, “You’re the type of Lawyer guilty people hire” there is probably more examples I can’t think of other than the ones that apply to Jimmy but I imagine that Jimmy and Kim can’t look beyond their initial thoughts of Howard, Kim only sees the boss that treated her wrong and without respect, Jimmy sees the asshole that didn’t hire him into HMM and while some things were cleared up like the reason why Howard didn’t hire Jimmy he still can’t look past on how he viewed Howard before, taking what he thought of him and still regarding it as true. It’s kind of Ironic that Howard’s true self is possibly one of the nicest character in the show yet he is getting treated the worst out of all of these characters who are seen through the “People don’t change” view and the worst he gets it from is Jimmy who suffers just as much as Howard which is again ironic.

Howard put her in doc review after Jimmy aired the commercial for Davis & Maine, tried to redeem herself by getting HHM Mesa Verde, only to have Howard say "fuck you" and keep her in doc review. She was also pissed off at Howard for airing out his guilt in front of Jimmy on the day of Chuck’s death. And she was also offended that Howard assumed her decision to leave Mesa Verde was Jimmy’s doing. So, she’s always had a rocky relationship with Howard. If Howard were truly a terrible lawyer the firm wouldn't have lasted when Chuck died. Yes they have other talents within the firm, but if your leader is clueless that talent goes to waste. Chuck would also never respect Howard if he was completely incompetent, yet he treats him like a peer. We even see that Howard was a step ahead of Chuck when it came to their Disbarment trial. He explained to Chuck that he didn't need to take the stand due to the evidence, though of course Chuck's pride got in the way and it ended up ruining the trial. And yes Howard does play along with Chuck's request, but remember this is the Co-Founder of the entire Firm. If Howard doesn't play along then the idea of Chuck leaving the firm as a whole is suddenly on the table. You can even see Howard remorse over the fact that he needs to play along with Chuck's demands when he explains everything to Kim in his office. YES obviously Howard isn't a saint; He's mistreated Kim by putting her in doc review twice, but Kim has earnt almost every opportunity amongst every Firm in the show. She is pretty much free from Howard halfway through the show and can do what she wants. This is why what Kim and Jimmy are doing is malicious. They have other opportunities to live a successful life (primarily Kim), but they are actively choosing to bring down Howard. It's especially telling in the latest episode. When you take a step back Howard's wrong doings are really negligible compared to what Kim and Jimmy have done combined. Howard was never grudgeful or outright malicious.

I have to say that through the episodes Howard becomes more and more sympathic. Kim was the bigger power behind the plans to destroy his reputation in the end. Because of the two scenes so far where we can see her childhood, you can see that on one hand she know whats right und is for justice life (scene when drunken mother drove) and on the other hand that what she learns from her mom that laws can be broken as long you get through with it, it is ok. Also you can see that she had to work hard in her life to become a good lawyer, which seems easier for Howard. Mike also underlines this kind of, when he says that she would be stronger than Jimmy.

Howard has many redeeming qualities. I think of him as one of the most noble of all the characters in the show. He legitimately felt sorrow at the loss of Chuck, and was guilt-ridden about the idea that he may have caused it. Howard has made honest and open attempts to give Jimmy the respect, opportunity, and consideration that Chuck always denied him. Howard took Jimmy's childish attacks in stride and understanding, all while maintaining his respect and consideration. What he has done in the past was done on orders as a junior partner in the firm. As the leader of the firm, he has made an honest effort to amend the mistakes of the past leadership. Howard is good, decent, law-abiding, responsible, and hard working. He is a man of substance. Well done. Great explanation. I think you can add the displaced anger over what Chuck did to him. He cannot strike out at Chuck anymore and Howard is the face of his brother's firm that treated him so rotten. Jimmy knows now that Howard was acting the bad guy for Chuck (and how awful that must have been for Howard to do that when that was totally Chuck's problem but he could not stand up to him). Re: “Why not Howard?”… How about this for an answer: Howard is a human being, and Jimmy and Kim have no right to tarnish his reputation and his name (those stains don’t wash off) and harm or destroy his life. They have no right to plant (fake) drugs in his locker, knowingly spread false rumors about him, steal his car, frame him for soliciting and mistreating prostitutes or any other wacky scheme they come up with. This isn’t even a Mike vs. Hector situation, in which the latter is guilty of shooting a Good Samaritan in the face and threatening the former’s granddaughter. Howard is a lawyer and a straight arrow. I don’t care if they resent his privileged upbringing, dislike his impeccable business suits, think he was an unfair boss, hate him for being able to process grief when Jimmy could not, or whatever other petty justification they have for targeting him. It doesn’t even matter if he’s a nice guy or not (for what it’s worth, I tend to think he is). What they are doing is wrong. It is criminal and, more importantly, it is immoral. In 604, Kim asked Jimmy if he thinks they are “wicked.” Well, if people are ultimately defined by their actions and choices, as opposed to their feelings or intentions, then… yes, Kim. You are. You both are. So even if Howard might not be the “good guy” of the story or of this scenario, Jimmy and Kim, as likable as they are sometimes, certainly are not the “good guys” either. One of the things about this one and BB was constant conflict. Everybody always seems one sentence, one word, short of ...salvaging things, saving themselves, it's tough to describe. I felt sorry for Chuck, but when he told jimmy "you never really meant that much to me"...wow. Howard has done some lousy things, but keeping Jimmy out of Sandpiper was the biggest.
@joebruin62012 жыл бұрын
..., but keeping Jimmy out of Sandpiper was the biggest. You are one word short :) Sorry, just messing with you. Awesome observation. The silence is loud in those cases. The audience expects a line that fits, but it never comes. It feels so real, in moments under a lot of pressure, especially when someone disappoints us, we wish to say what`s on our mind but we just stare and then leave. Also, the person that hurts us maybe wish to say something like sorry, I didn`t mean it, but they never do.

Howard sending Kim to doc review twice to humiliate her, and keeping her there even after she landed Mesa Verda, was incredibly mean spirited. He humiliated her for no good reason. I was surprised she didn't rebel against it, although she did leave the firm. The writers don't make it clear that it's connected to why she and Jimmy are now going after Howard, but sheesh...

Still doesn't justify it. It's only a job and she can quit. Also Jimmy literally damages his brothers reputation publicly just to get her a gig , aggravates him in court and eventually baits the insurance company to hike his brothers premiums ( which snowballs into a Howard Chuck confrontation ) . Jimmy does everything he can to break his brother. Infact he is 💯 responsible for Chuck's death.

Jimmy is not responsible for Chuck's death. You're forgetting how Chuck and Howard stole Mesa Verde from Kim and how Chuck entrapped Jimmy into confessing ontape to falsifying the documents. Chuck and Jimmy are two sides of the same coin. They both pushed each other buttons but Chuck underestimated the seriousness of his mental condition and that's why he snapped in the end. Not to mention he refused the treatment or even acknowledging it was mental illness.
@mblack70632 жыл бұрын
Howard's smarmy condescension when he told Kim that Jimmy is conning her into leaving Mesa Verde pushed Kim over the edge. Kim has always set goals and achieved them on her own terms and with motives that are important only to her. Sometimes not even Jimmy understands her motives. But for Howard to treat her like an empty headed female added to the fact that she will defend Jimmy at almost any cost explains why she will make him pay. I will not be surprised if we find out Kim got back at her mother somehow too.

Good video. But I think you missed a key part. The context of Kim's most recent conversation with Howard was indeed Jimmy's return from the desert, but it was not the danger he was in then that matters so much as it is their confrontation with Lalo (which you did not mention). Kim (not Jimmy) won that for them in the short term- but at that point she does not know what will happen in the long-term. They have gone to the hotel (which you did mention) because they are so afraid that Lalo will get more evidence and come back to get them that it is the only thing they can think to do. They both "go to work" that day, but neither is okay. And that is also why she is so frightened at the start of that conversation with Howard- BECAUSE she is afraid Howard knows something about that and is worried that they are about to be caught- and because she is already off her game (Jimmy loses a very easy case at the same time because he is also off). But when all Howard has to say is what you mentioned- the bowling balls and prostitutes, her not acting rationally in his view- she is initially so relieved that she laughs at him. And she is insulted (as you said) but now she feels the power again that she had in confronting Lalo- and confronts Howard, too. When when they become convinced that they are safe from Lalo (after Jimmy's talk with Mike), her relief brings with it hubris, excitement, and a desire to bring someone else down who has recently upset her: Howard Hamlin.

I really (unfortunately for Kim) hope that their plan fails. Howard stands by Chuck till he can't anymore. He was Chuck's partner so of course he had to be on his side when Chuck prohibited Jimmy to work on the firm. When he opens up to Jimmy about Chuck killing himself, it was because Jimmy really knew Chuck better than Rebecca did (when Kim complained to him that he did not say that to Rebecca). Howard was a tough boss to Kim, true, but anything besides that? I do think he is remarkable. I also do think he offended Kim when he mentioned she left Mesa Verde because of Jimmy. But he does not deserve what they are planning. In general he is one of the good guys of the show.

I’m actually shocked to see some comments asserting that Howard deserved some of Jimmy’s pranks. Even if he didn’t get shot, I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t feel sorry for Howard. The guy did nothing wrong. He was being punched by both Chuck and Jimmy during the whole show for no cause of his own. Chuck couldn’t keep up with his ego, threatened Howard and then selfishly committed a suicide. His counterpart Jimmy, dumped all his guilt, remorse, and anger he felt toward his brother on Howard even though it’s obvious that he’s not the one to be blamed. I almost laughed at Kim when she accused Howard for being narcissistic even though he’s the only main character mature enough to act with common sense instead of taking out their anger on innocent people around. He serves the same role as Schwartz couple in BB. They show that rich and talented people are no more evil than the bitter underdogs. Howard’s only blunder was that he never properly pushed out Mcgill brothers from his life. The moral of the BB and BCS has been always simple. When you make shitty mistakes, not only you, but the people around you also shall be forced to pay the price.

Howard is the Hank of the show. Both of them were decent, highly respected and self-respecting of themselves but Jimmy and Walt ruined their lives and reputation. Yeah, there's nothing innocent about Howard. Jimmy worked his ass off for years to be a legitimate lawyer and person in society only to be blackballed by Chuck and Howard. Everybody just forgets that Howard helped and tried to have Jimmy permanently disbarred, destroying everything Jimmy worked for. Not once did Howard say, " yeah, I'm not going to help destroy a man's life over your family bs". Someone who does that to you cannot, and should not ever be trusted again.
@thesizzaman2 жыл бұрын
@@Foreverfreeusa *Blackballed by Chuck, who used Howard’s loyalty to make him the focus of Jimmy’s ire. *Howard regretted not standing up for Jimmy when he first became a lawyer and tried to make amends with a genuine job offer. *Jimmys underhanded actions cost HHM Mesa Verde, and when he committed a felony by breaking and entering to destroy the evidence, Howard was an eye-witness. He was called at the hearing and gave an honest retelling of what happened, even being honest about how he liked Jimmy when he worked at HHM. We all rooted for Jimmy in that situation but in reality, any lawyer would be disbarred for what Jimmy did. Howard is one of the few people who could be called ‘good’ in this show.

2:40 in the first episode of BCS, Chuck says that Howard wants Jimmy to not use his own last name McGill but I thought it was common knowledge that it was really Chuck saying that and using Howard's name as he hates Jimmy and think it's would be an embarrassment to the McGill legacy he has created in the law circles around Southwest US. Again, not hiring Jimmy was mostly Chuck putting the pressure on Howard and Howard wanted to hire Jimmy at HHM.

One thing not addressed in this video is the role of guilt in their decision to take down Howard. Featured prominently in establishing shots is Howard’s ‘Namaste’ license plate, a symbol of his emotional death and rebirth after Chuck’s suicide. Howard’s knowledge that he played a part in Chuck’s death drove him to rock bottom, but he confronted his guilt and came out the other side. Jimmy and Kim haven’t acknowledged their guilt over Chuck’s death, and deeply resent Howard’s ability to confront his guilt and work past it.
