I wonder how much different our history would have been if Northumbria could have got past the constant infighting and killing. Could have been the strongest region in England and even fought off the Vikings the first few times they landed on our shores to perhaps never return. Is the head still confirmed to be at Durham Cathedral today? Seems like it is legitimately his skull.

Oswald head was apparently smuggled to York via the Ford over the Don at Long Sandal Doncaster. There is a small church dedicated to him there as the recovery party overnighted on the south Bank waiting for low tide so they could use the Roman Ford. About 6 years ago a Roman Fort was found there , there is also a Brigantes fort on the North Bank, The Roman Fort was a look out post for the Roman Castellum at Danum,(Doncaster) , it had been there for several hundred years as the Romans first built the Ford as they were trying to build a Road to their Fort on the Calder at Roall Hall. Interestingly 1931 A Skeleton and 2 Skulls were found on the road from Hatfield to Stainforth, they had been secreted in a shallow ditch. Probably another recovery project after the battle of Hatfield, they were trying to get the remains over the Ford at Stainforth and then to York. For the reward from bereaved relatives no doubt. I wonder if the Skeleton was Edwin’s son and the skulls were high status Northumbrians.

Enjoyed that Alex . I live locally to Hexham and have found very little on the Battle of Heavenfield. I read that the “Welsh” were routed and many were cut down along the course of Dyvels water beck at Corbridge . I presume the remains of the wall and the nearby fort at Corbridge would have featured in this battle.. do you have any useful sources to recommend for further reading ?

Alex, your vlog title is a little misleading and you might be able to accuse me of a little pedantry here but Great Britain didn't exist at the time and none of his body parts are in Wales or Scotland (even taking into account national boundary changes over time), they are all in England, as well as bits in northern Europe. And at what point did Cadwallon ab Cadfan become King of England ? 2:20 timestamp BTW I'm a Mercian ... so be very careful ... we have long memories 😁
@GoBlueGirl78
@GoBlueGirl78 Ай бұрын
I believe he is referring to sub-Roman Britain, not Great Britain. IIRC, Cadwallon ab Cadfan was (a) King of the Britons.

@@GoBlueGirl78 Yeah, what Alex said and wrote don't tally. Probably just typos but we blame monks in the past for mis-writings that misrepresent history and cast things into doubt and they were writing with frozen fingers in draughty monasteries ...
@AlexIlesUK

The King of England slipped through, this one took a lot of editing and my editor isn't a specialist on early medieval history. The title means people see and watch, I hope you would want the channel to do well, so I have to play the KZbin game a bit, else no one will bother at all with watching the videos on what's considered a very niche topic, meaning you don't get to enjoy it!
@iainmc9859
@iainmc9859 Ай бұрын
@@AlexIlesUK I certainly want your history channel to prosper ... but not at the cost of intentional inaccuracy. That's more worrying than just a typo or somebody getting it wrong, which is perfectly understandable ...
@AlexIlesUK
@AlexIlesUK Ай бұрын
@iainmc9859 if you think the content in the episode, other than the mistake I've admitted to, is intentionally misleading please say where and when and I will do my best to improve, but KZbin is an unforgiving platform and there's an element of a game that needs to be played. If you think I'm being intentionally misleading please feel free to block the channel because I didn't want to upset anyone or to be thought of doing that. I work hard to be accurate and intentionally educational.
