So I found a laser pointer while cleaning a theater and accidentally pointed it in my eye for about around a half a second. It’s a red laser with a 5 mW. How badly did I damage my eye because while I don’t notice any changes in my vision, my eye hurts and Google isn’t helping keeping my heart rate down.

I work in warehouseing and on quite a few occasions i have been caught in the eye accidentally by people using bar code scanners. I now have a permantly damaged right eye my vision is cloudy and it has a dull pain all the time, as a consequence i have left this type of work. Your lecturer is an idiot if he is waving his hands about while using a laser pointer and you dont have to put up with it. If you sit quietly and say nothing your sight may become damaged for the rest of your life as mine has so please act now for your own health. You only get one pair of eyes they cannot be replaced.

I once looked at the reflection of a green burning laser in dark carpet and google made me worried I was going to have permanent damage but I don't think I did, at least nothing very visible. One other question I have is about old flash bulbs that use magnesium, they are super bright but only for 1/20th of a second, I accidentally set one off with static right in front of my face, the entire center of my vision was like one of those dark spots from looking at a normal lightbulb, it went away is a minute or two but I am wonder if they can really do any damage other than if they explode

Good question Ben! That would depend on the radiant intensity of the bulb as well as the frequency of light the bulb was emitting. If the light from the bulb hadn’t been amplified by stimulated emission I can’t imagine it carrying more energy than a laser pointer for a given segment. I sometimes have patients that have had arc wielding flashes, most have no apparent damage to their eyes but I have come across a few that had scarring that may have been from that (none that was sight threatening though)

I'm wondering. When I was 12, I got hit in my right eye by a tennis ball, and I remember that I saw in black and white for a few minutes. A few days after that, I saw an opophthalmologist who diagnosed a retinal detachment (or maybe just a wound threatening to induce a detachment, I don't remember exactly). I have to see him a few times, for laser sessions. He was putting a kind of lens under my eye, and then sending a laser beam (green) by small pulses. I had to pause sometimes because it was giving me a headache, and also I felt my eye warming up slightly. Two questions, if it is in your field of expertise : - Did my eye really warm up ? (because it's been years, and maybe my brain is building false memories), - I had to stare at a fixed point in front of me (a button on his shirt to be precise), what did I risk if I looked elsewhere while being "shot" by a pulse of the green laser beam ? Thank you ! (Sorry for taking your precious time, but man I'm so curious of this field of medicine !)

Heating up makes sense as the laser is essentially concentrated energy, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the heat was coming from the laser machine. Also by staring elsewhere the surgeon would have had a hard time aiming at the correct location and may have lasered a part of the retina that didn’t need lasering !

Thanks for the good explanation, a kid was shining with a laserpointer in peoples eyes but when asked to stop with that all he did was put on an attitude (kids these days apparently do not get educated properly) i knew why it wasnt good for the eye and the effects but could not find the correct words so this helped me alot in explaining it to the kid what the possible dangers are with those things. After he said he understood en wont do it again i gave him another earfull that he should listen to what adults are saying when he shouldnt do stuff and not talk shit back haha

Great video on eyes & lasers. Have you done anything on mobile LEDs: like flashlight, bicycle lights or utility lights & eyes. Sure LED light gets deminished with distance due to dispersion, but many are getting to be very intense. And they are more common that open use lasers. Also, no many would recognise the retinal damage, actually to Google it reveals no cases (up til 28 Dec 2021). But I think that is just because the general public cans see the very small pinpoint or line retinal damage.

What is the relevance of the intensity of the beam inside the laser device? That intensity may be very high, but the amount of light exiting the device still will not be higher than the power input into the laser. I have a question: So when I was 15, I put a laser on my eye. Like I put the laser in contact with my eyelid and pressed the button. And it shine red and I looked at it with my eyes closed. When I say this, please keep in mind I'm not a doctor. If you think you having dry eyes might be a medical issue, see a doctor. That said, when I have something like dry eyes or cracked lips, etc., the thing that fixes it for me is drinking more water. You're supposed to drink like 2 to 4 Liters of water every day. I admittedly fail to do that somewhat often, which tends to be when have those issues, especially in the winter or when there's low humidity.

@@absolarix although water never hurts, dry eyes are more so to do with the eye physiology losing homeostasis. It could be due to so many different factors like diet (omega-3 intake), behavioural differences like not enough blinking and also external factors like dust, sand etc

Sir, Hi. Do you know how much mw on avarage are the machines in grocery stores where you put your products code bars to check the prices? I was wearing some tinted prescription glasses of security that I use in work, they are made of some sort of plastic so my concern is... When I checked the coding bar ( bar codes) of some socks, the plastic bag which I placed underneath ( very close to the mirror where the laser beam is ) the machine red super bright laser reflected / shined ( indirectly and without a particular pattern, just everywhere ) a lot on the surface of the white sticker where the code bar is and the bag surface and my eyes hurt in that moment. Did I possibly cause damage? Because I was wearing plastic security regular tinted indoor outdoor security glasses and my retina could possibly be in that moment more open and vulnerable to exposure due the tinted feature and the shine of the laser in the surface of the plastic bag and sticker reached and hurt momentarily my retina? Although it would be impossible for me to know for sure but usually red lasers don’t carry enough energy to burn through your retina after 4 seconds so I’m guessing and hoping there wasn’t much damage there!

@@AntonioTheOptom This is actually something of an issue in many workplaces as they are increasingly using these scanners at close range on reflective surfaces to read and track barcodes. Over the course of weeks, it led me to constant eye inflammation, migraines, and blood shot eyes. Now any type of direct exposure from even the scanners in stores causes eye swelling and migraines, any idea how to correct such a thing. And unfortunately most people thing your full of excrement for even mentioning its illegal to have the lasers pointing and shining at people's faces in entryways and hallways....

Not likely. That bulb had a frosted outer surface which is much larger than the very small LEDs producing the light. So the light source has the appearance of a much larger surface & less light intensity. It would be about the same as a regular incandescent.

I'm not an expert but looking at a laser in a mirror is 100% as bad as looking at it directly. Everything else should absorb most of the energy. But how much gets sent back probably depends on how reflective (smooth/shiny) the object is, as well as the color. Something black should absorb more energy and reflect back less energy than something white.

@@James-zy6nq I think it's not that strong it was just a plain Chinese laser pointer with button cell watch battery in it. There were no available powerful laser pointers back in the day that I know of, today tho you can buy those lasers which can pop balloons online.

I have a question man. Some fucking clown shined a blue lazor at my eye through my windshield on the freeway last night. It was blue. They were ahead of me taking an exit. I would assume longer distances would have more particles in the lasers path so would have less energy but by how much would depend on the power of the laser
