Another thing that helps: lighter strings. I always recommend beginners use REALLY light string gauges. Like, insanely light. So, for an electric guitar that would be 8 - 38, and for an acoustic 10 - 47. Of course, those gauges vary a bit depending on brand, but those are the ballpark gauges. Once your finger pain subsides, then you can bump up to the next heavier string gauge, if you want.

It could be the action is too high on your guitar. If it is an inexpensive acoustic with metal strings it will be hard to fix. Also if it is an inexpensive acoustic with metal strings consider starting out with a classical guitar with nylon strings or an electric. They both have much softer strings.

(LOL) Wow, this brought back memories, Erich! I started playing on a $30 Harmony that was a real piece of junk -- but I didn't know any better. Yeah, getting the callouses built up is moderately painful and takes some time. Later I learned more (about both guitars and playing,) went to a nice six string, and later "found my niche" with 12-string guitars. Played the coffee houses in the Detroit area for some years, using Ibanez and Alvarez 12's. After losing an argument with a drill press (DON'T wear gloves while operating a drill press, kids), the left thumb was just never gonna be that strong again. Built a cheapie Strat copy and all of a sudden, I could play again. An electric with a low or moderately low action really helps! But that said: learn the acoustic FIRST, everything else will fall into place from there. Thanks for a great series, Erich! Love your vids.

I have Peripheral Neuropathy in my left leg and left hand. I also take powerful blood thinners and I bruise, tear skin and bleed very easily. My Brother is a guitarist and he gifted me a MIM Tele completely setup with 9-42 and the action is about as low as it can go. I love the thin neck and am very grateful. But I can only play for 5 min or so without one or more left hand finger issues. I see finger tip covers made from various forms of rubber or latex... are they worth trying? Glad I found this video of yours, as I can show it to my daughter if she ever starts complaining about the tips of her fingers being hard. I built my callouses up pretty well and I expected that pressure pain to happen eventually. Playing through that pain isn't a big deal. The real problem I'm having is my joints and non-responsive muscles/nerves. Sending the signal from my brain to my muscles to have my fingers move sometimes just doesn't seem to get there, especially if I'm not looking at my hand while I'm playing. The joints may pop or creak in my hands and wrist with the occasional ache too. Yesterday was a real killer on my hands and arms, but I eventually made it through the song I was practicing. When the carpal tunnel in my wrists first started, I tried using hot pepper treatment and that seemed to work okay but I couldn't touch anyone or anything after I applied the peppers. Any suggestions?

That's not true. If your finger tips are hurting because the skin is soft, that's one thing. But I you're feeling pain coming from the bone or joints, something inside the finger, then your technique is probably wrong. Playing through that kind of pain can make it impossible to play guitar, sometimes forever. I don't mean to sound melodramatic, but that's the truth
@part2interactive5476 жыл бұрын

Question, I've gotten my calluses (finally) after a few months of on and off playing. However, for the first time I've been learning faster songs (Rock and Roll - Led Zepplin) and it never bothered me practicing for the past week, however after yesterday all of my fingers feel strained on the left and right sides of the fingers with some knuckle pain. I haven't changed the way I play really with the exception of maybe barring for an A chord instead of using my first three fingers. Could anyone offer me any thoughts on this?
@rltofuiii4 жыл бұрын
Not a expert player here by any means, but this helped me when I felt it (friends tip) It's more about stretching then calluses in this case. Try not to play with cold hands and stretch them a bit. With time it seems to not be as necessary. Try to warm up lightly before with simple chords, can help.

I've built the calluses, so that's not a problem now- MY problem is my fingers hurt when trying to hold barre chords forever😣 My guitar is set up nice, it's not that, I've been a dog groomer for 27 years, and my hands have issues. I can play barre chords, as long as I'm playing open chords too, but when it's all barre chords, it's a real problem. Sometimes it's bad enough my fingers lock and I can't get them into another configuration, which is really frustrating! I've only been playing a little over a year, and I'm trying to get familiar with keys like F#, for example, but then I run into this problem, all barre chords, holding holding holding , cramp cramp cramp😟 I do use a capo when I need to, but if there's anyone with a suggestion that could help...

Sorry I'm only twenty seconds in so maybe later you say. But.....I've been playing for roughly 14 years and I'm self taught and never took the time to learn much but play lol. My fingers don't hurt I call that learning. But my actual hands are now starting to kill. Like I've been playing an acoustic for this whole time and I could play eight hours no break like it was nothing. Now I play same guitar same strings and everything and my whole hand is killing after like five min. I do have bad action on my acoustic and I use some heavy ass strings but is this normal? I mean surely I would have noticed before all these years right? Why do my whole hands hurt

What about a frostbite numbness? (On tips of my middle & index)..I'm a learner & have had my guitar for 3 days. Is this the start of calluses?..I'm hoping maybe?. Is it ok to persue in my learning?. I suppose numb is better than pain right? Although its a lil painful too. Helppppp!✌

I have no issues with my fingertips, but my wrists and joints in my fngers hurt even if I do proper stretching and warm-ups before my practice sessions.

I get knuckle pain in my left index finger pushing on the strings. Instead of learning songs I'm not focusing on my technique since I'm obviously doing something wrong.

Get a shorter scale guitar. Tune it down and use the capo.

I can play through some stuff no problem, but when I need to bend G string on a 2th fret, even a half-step up, I have a real problem. Maybe I didn't practice enough or my guitar setup isn't right. Doing a lot of high string bends get me in trouble real fast. That is really frustrating.

More practice will increase your strength and technique my friend.

Same. Am I looking at permanently losing fingertip sensitivity and having fingertip numbness forever if I learn guitar?
