I've grown tomatoes for over 20 years, normally have good success, and located in 6-B. This year has been WEIRD....My tomatoes are nice and tall with large stems but don't seem to have very many blooms, is this a deficiency in something in N-P-K or micro-nutrients, what are your thoughts, THANK YOU?

Neptune’s Harvest makes a really great fish emulsion called Rose and Flowering. It’s higher in P-K which helps balance against too much nitrogen. Little pricy but it works really well. :)

Having been a bee keeper, bees do not take pollen or nectar from the tomatoes as a general rule. When they do go out usually they go to one type of flower exclusively during their gathering. Other insects and bees will visit tomatoes. What I have learned is tomatoes are self pollinators, gravity, wind are generally the forces that pollinate tomatoes.

I shake my tomato plants whenever I pass by to make sure they self polinate. Noticed we don't have many bees at all this year. It breaks my heart. First I had apple blossoms, then alium, purple flowers, milkweed blossoms, and now they are loving the sunflowers. I also have lots of hollyhocks in bloom, borage and other flowers will bloom soon. Just not many bees... 😢. Last year they were all over the place!

@@curiouscat3384Last year, spring started with peach blossoms, there were bees everywhere! I also planted Borage, which honey bees love, plus I have a garden full of bee loving flowers, with plenty growing now, too. This year I had apple blossoms first, and could only count about a half dozen at a time. No comparison! The same was true as they went between groups of flowers that bloom in succession. They just finished off the milkweed, and right now they are enjoying the sunflowers. The count is up to about a dozen that I can see at a given moment. 😢 Have not seen the first bumblebee which usually enjoys my flowering trees and hollyhocks, and squash blossoms. The problem is the WHOLE area is seeing a shortage of bees. My gardener has been helping on his brother's 5K acre farm and said they are seeing very few, too. It could be a combination of the -25°F temp we had this winter and/or the continued use of chemicals in this area... I don't know. It's serious.

Yes, shaking assists gravity, too. With heirloom tomatoes, you actually want self-pollination in order to retain the variety's characteristics in the seeds you save.

I grow an insectary near my garden. It has about 15 different plants that bloom at different times all season. This helps to attract pollinators. Another benefit is that these plants also attract beneficial insects that keep the pests under control. For example, the first garden I had at my new home saw an infestation of cucumber beetles, squash bugs and aphids. The next year, after growing the insectary, I saw only one cucumber beetle and no squash bugs. I also had no issue with aphids at all. What I did find was an abundance of ladybugs, hover flies, lacewings and soldier beetles. The insectary is a beautiful additional to your yard. Imagine all the pretty wildflowers that grow in a field, and then imagine a portion of that in your yard. As I add more beds to my garden I will add more insectaries to not only protect my crops, but to add a pleasant landscape to relax in.

Heat is always what ends up taking my tomatoes early in my area. Putting up a 40-50% shade cloth has made a huge difference! I still lose flowers, but not as many and not as quickly. By mid-June we’re regularly in triple digit temps so I keep up my shade cloth all summer now. It also prevents sun scald on the fruit, which tomatoes and bell peppers seem really prone to.

This is happening ONLY with my super heavy producers like the Japanese Black triefele and Cuor di Bue Albenga. My other tomatoes (bonnie best, tappy, djena and black cherries), are not losing blossoms. The heavy producers produced more blossoms than ever before so could a third reason for blossom drop be over production/survival of the fittest scenario?

I only planted three tomato plants this year, and they were doing fine until we had six straight rainy days in late June. My garden is located in an in-accessible location, but it's the only spot that gets full sun. Since I didn't need to water the tomatoes, bell peppers and cucumbers for 6 days I didn't go down to the garden. When I did, the tomato plants (and only the tomato plants) were stripped to just the trunk and branches. Not a leaf in sight and no debris on the ground, so something obviously ate the leaves and some of the branches on all three plants. The plants are about 4 feet tall and looked healthy, so I left them alone. Now, one week later, all three plants have started to leaf-out again. I don't hold out much hope to harvest any fruit, but I wonder what could have caused the damage? The yard is completely fenced with a six-foot board fence so it couldn't be deer and rabbit couldn't get to the top of these plants. Any idea what I might have encountered?

It still doesn’t make sense if they’re still developing the flowers on other branches and the weather is mild. What do I do? I’ve even bought an electric toothbrush to aid in pollination.

Meanwhile mine are inside Hydroponically and it's not too hot in here. 🙃 I'm now thinking it's the nutrients or even the light. 😭

I have two tomato plants in tubs. One has beautiful flowers and the one next to it the flowers r falling off. The one that has beautiful flowers and leaves is in more sun. The other plant that’s losing it’s flowers have curled leaves. They received the same amount of water and we bought at the same time n place. Help

I'm in the high desert. I have 40 percent shade cloth and tomatoes are mulched. They get watered every morning. I have a few flowers but not one tomato. I'm so sad. Its also been wendy.

I'm not getting tomatoes this year after a very successful last year. I think someone is over fertilizing, it's the only difference from last year.

Hi Roger. I’m in Sacramento so I feel your pain. Keeping your soil moist 100% of the time + shade cloth really really helps. That said, there are some varieties that simply don’t do well on the heat, genetically. If you keep them watered you might find you get a bumper fall crop. :)
