Some New Yorkers might get offended by this video... but I always tell the truth about how I perceive the world. And the honest truth is, that New Yorkers (specifically people in Manhattan) are very unfriendly, impatient and impolite. I noticed this on my first trip here in 2009, and have realized it more and more every time I come back.
I understand that it's a fast-paced, business-driven, cut-throat society -- but come on, at least people can be a little nicer!!
What's your take on people in New York City? Do you agree with me?

Drew, as a native to the NYC area, I honestly agree with you. It is sad. I remember right after 9/11, there was a solid effort among NYers to slow down and look out for each other. Unfortunately, it was short-lived. It is always getting worse. People are disengaged, impatient, apathetic, and only seeking to inflate themselves. It is more crowded and expensive. The hustle mentality is at a boiling point and it crowds out those who cannot or do not wish to conform.

@Anonymous From all the reply I read, your comment looks perfect...😃😃 Nice thoughts...👍 But, Let me tell you about one city in india, Mumbai: Really diversity divides people & laid to lack of trust; but for Mumbai I think diversity is the thing which helped for unity. Every other person you'll meet in Mumbai speaks different language , (over 780 Lang. are registered in India) Not everyone can speak Hindi, Mumbai is economic capital of India & people are in their own tension, Even though I've noticed that people are very friendly,. & Smiles back...😄😊😊

@Anonymous yes I forget this thing while writing but sure , NY is made by mixture of foreigners worldwide.. While Mumbai includes mixture of mostly south-east Asians, like Sri Lankan , Bangladeshi, Indonesians, Thai, Nepali, Bhutan, & Muslim countries from Middle East asia ,(as long as I've seen in my 20yr of living in this city🙄) But NY is maybe the biggest mixture of culture in world🌎 😄😄😄

The thing about New YOrk City is that social interaction is so available that it is also disposable to most New Yorkers. The fact is it's very easy to find your tribe--the people who you really connect with. Simply find an event calendar and there will be some kind of event for any possible thing you are into. Most New Yorkers have already met their friends, and they have their fill of a social life. So when a random person comes along, they couldn't care less.

I haven't been to NYC a ton, but from my experience, I haven't seen any rudeness. Granted, I'm an East Coast person and probably share some cultural similarities not being too far from NYC. The last time I went, pre-pandemic mind you, I found people on the subway, train, and out on the street to be more friendly than I anticipated. Helpful too. I remember being on a crowded Subway, trying to get off, and this guy, looking very NYC and not like he'd be very friendly, stepped off just to let me get out. We did the guy nod and everything. I think it's less "rude" than "busy." I've traveled a bit outside the US and Western Europe, and I find that Westerners in general are more standoffish than other parts of the world. Everywhere else, people were, if they weren't trying to scam you as a tourist that is, generally more friendly than in the West.

NYC is a small city that is overcrowded. And the population is booming with the increase of transplants from other states. The reality is that it's very easy to be friendly when you come from the suburbs in a small town where everyone is pretty much the same. What many perceive as rudeness is really a defense mechanism for dealing with the everyday overcrowded conditions of the city. Which is why I feel weird anytime I go to the suburbs. Until you've lived here for years and had to walk these streets and had to take public transit everyday, you'll never really understand. But it's 2018, everyone has some idea of what to expect. If you don't like it, don't come back. Also, if you really want to see rudeness in NYC, go to Flushing, Queens during the day.
@somekid7
@somekid7 5 жыл бұрын
omg my mom lived in Flushing for a good while and the very first time I went out there, this Asian dude in his late-20s roundhouse kicked a middle-aged man at the bus stop in broad daylight, because the middle-aged man yelled at the bus driver for not stopping at the front of the huge line, which led the bus driver to just close his doors and drive off, leaving like 30 people to miss the bus. It's crazy out there. My mom tells me the customer service is super fast there though. She says it's cause they're mostly Chinese lol. They have amazing Korean and Chinese food there. Guess the rat race is even more brutal since the bar's set even higher out there.
@somekid7
@somekid7 5 жыл бұрын
It's the price of living in an overpopulated city with an excessive amount of tourists. The mentally ill and homeless can't be taken care of. Housing is outdated and poorly managed. Taxes and cost of living is insane. Rich folks take so much of the wealth there. For all the amazing things you get in NYC, you have to deal with the consequences. You get extremes. The rat race is real in the city. You don't wanna get involved with crazy people so you get used to tuning out. Most people can't afford to waste a minute because they work in the service industry. If you're a tourist, stay the fuck out the way. Also, this phenomenon isn't unique to NYC. London, Chicago, LA are the same. Same problems. People can only deal with so much bullshit when they have to live in those cities. Put yourself in their shoes.
@the_letter_b
@the_letter_b 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think any of those cities are as extremely harsh socially as NYC. London comes close but people are at least politer, not nearly as loud, and less physical. People in both LA and Chicago are noticeably less on edge and less rude. Of course, in no big city can you expect to make random friends with strangers and get hellos from strangers walking around in public.

My Dad talked about his experience with New York as a teenager when he got lost and had to ask for directions. The guy that he asked started bitching and waving his hands around so my Dad started walking away and the man said, "Do you want directions or not?!" This was in the 1950s lol

Interesting comment Drew. I'm a 58 year old Aussie, from Melbourne that has been to NYC twice. The first time was 1972-73 as my late grandfather lived there and I travelled with my late mother, being a young kid. I was mesmerised and instantly fell in love with the place. The second time was as a 26 year old in 1988-89 as a solo traveller and I still loved it!. However I vividly remember an incident from my first visit as a young child. I went with my mother to Grand Central Station as we were supposed to visit some distant family members of my late father in New Jersey. Not knowing which train we needed, my mother and I approached an information booth where my mother politely asked the guy if he could be of some assistance. This man, was supposedly in a paid position to help commuters get around the city and surrounds. His response to us which I clearly remember some 48 years later... " I'm new in paradise too lady". We were in total shock and actually never made it on to a train that day! I would hope that things have improved nowadays but I suppose It might give NYC some of it's "uniqueness". Love your videos BTW keep up the great work, happy travels and stay safe.

I was taken back by how rude the police were to me in new york, i was only there 3 days. I'm from Australia, I was minding my own business making a phone call and cop started interrogating me aggressively for no reason, why i was there, what i was doing etc, it felt like a bully was throwing his weight around, looking for a person to talk back so he could beat or arrest them.

Manhattan is not the entirety of New York, Drew. More people who aren't from this country make up the population of people who live in Manhattan. Try upstate New York....or the east end of Long Island and I promise you, there are millions of New Yorkers who are some of the greatest, nicest, and most hospitable people you'll ever meet! Manhattan is a tiny island/country of its own! Even I hate Manhattan and I live less than 100 miles away from it! I live out where it's beautiful quiet and near the water, as Long Island is a long Island. The very north east end. Look into it! Google Orient Point, Greenport, Southold, Mattituck.....and on the South fork too! Center Moriches, Quogue, Montauk, there's rich history here!

Hi Gregg, Yes it's very expensive to live here, on eastern Long Island. My parents and brother live in a tiny house in Greenport and my husband and I live in a 1BR apartment in Moriches. It's now over $1,800 a month for rent. But one thing is that people are friendly here. It's always assumed that "New Yorkers are rude." New York in and of itself encompasses a huge amount of land, and zillions of different kinds of people from every corner of the world! There are rude people wherever you go, but those that live in Manhattan are BUSY AND ALWAYS IN A RUSHED TO GET WHERE THEY'RE GOING! Other parts of the state and every part that makes up New York are vastly different, and I was so lucky to be raised in a super tiny town. Kids got to be kids and everyone knew everyone and it was safe. I'm so happy that you replied to my comment, Gregg! My parents were both born and raised in Greenport so they probably know/knew your family!😊 Take care! Cathy 🐱💜👍🏻

One of the major problems is that if you are friendly to everyone, you are eventually gonna be friendly to someone with a few screws loose who will cause you a problem. Once it happens enough or you have a particularly bad experience due to your friendliness, you will totally understand why people don't get too personal here. With that being said I think New Yorkers get a bad rap, most of them have good manners and they are really just avoiding confrontation and nutjobs. The anonymity in NYC is powerful, and people like it like that there. It's easier to just avoid socializing when you can just move with the city instead.
@coolbluetunes9885

I disagree. New York people aren't rude, they just act differently from people in the south and elsewhere. They don't feel the need to go out of their way to act nicely to total strangers. If you talk to them for at least a little bit they'll usually be more helpful. I would even say that by acting this way they RESPECT other people's autonomy. And by the way the whole "rudeness" thing is pretty relative across cultures... like depending on the standard you used to judge rudeness you could say that there are many places where people are ruder than in new york...
