RepoDraghon There's more to it than that
@RepoDraghon9 жыл бұрын
Yes but that is the main, main reason. Another is the VIN
@Skylinedude9 жыл бұрын
The video states the reasons why it's illegal (Nissan never made a US-Spec Skyine.) The 25 year rule is a RESULT of those reasons (the grey market, lobbying funded by Mercedes etc) The show or display rule, the 25 year rule are more like exceptions than they are limitations. I honestly see the 25 year rule as a loophole to getting cars that would otherwise be illegal in the states.
@Skylinedude9 жыл бұрын
The VIN isn't an issue actually. The DMV and most insurance companies will work with you if you provide a shorter Japanese VIN
@RepoDraghon9 жыл бұрын
I actually am subscribed to a Japanese car auction and exporter site called Japan Partner and I asked them the regs. I'm just confirming what you said plus adding more. So don't get me wrong, I am agreeing here... cops were breaking down on the imports cause of the shorter vin thing a few years ago cause most insurance companies and DMVs would just add 0s to the vin or something like that to trick the system into accepting the car. The 25 year rule may have been cause of this but something similar was in place long before that for smog emissions on domestic vehicles (used to be anything made before 1975 didn't need a smog check I believe). Now it's set to 25 years.

So to summarize: the Skyline will go so fast, so quick, according to some extrapolations of Einstein's equations of general relatively (& special relativity), the GT-R, if it accelerates fast enough, and builds enough of a velocity(under a parametric curve)/speed (yes, faster than "c") will cause the car to travel back in time. I understand now. Thanks and NASA does not approve (like) Nissan because they beat them to their own game.

Yeah, he later explains the real reason some cars aren't legal in the U.S. A few other videos from California show that stock Skylines can't pass CA emissions test. Along with a bunch of cars that aren't even remotely sporty and have chances of outrunning a crown vic about as such of a bicycle. Nothing to do with their speed. Speaking of which, I hate to disappoint some of you, but stock Skylines aren't the fastest cars in the world :-) And certainly there are faster cars that are totally legal in the U.S., including CA (which has it's own additional tightass car emission requirements).
@digiaxon46828 жыл бұрын
I don't even know if it's officially legal in the U.S. Does that contraption have a catalytic converter at all? If it don't then probably not. DMV don't care if it costs $2 million or what. But then, if you've got Veyron you can probably afford to pay a registration ticket every time you drive it and get pulled over. BUT THEN - if a cop sees a Veyron - I think the registration will be the last on his mind. He'll probably still pull you over for something stupid just to look at the car, etc. See videos of a dude on a fire-spitting Lambo getting pulled over and talking to the cops.

I had a buddy years ago who had tried to buy a skyline. after going through all legal channels he found that the reason for the illegal status is due to safety reasons. after spending about $17,000 in safety modes he had a legal skyline. Cool for him but didn't think it was worth the money

Let me tell you the actual reality that why is it banned. Go open up the US history books of top-crime which is indeed top confidential of all time. Here, let me tell you the truth. Someone robbed a bank and stole a stash worth 2 billion dollars. The person I mean that had this Nissan R-34 GT-R completely tuned I think which he used to escape the bank but ended up getting caught after I don't know the exact time of chasing but you can guess it from the way He switched straight away three states in a single day. The safety regulation feature test on this car that made it banned is insanely false. The reality is that your dummy donut eating pups couldn't handle this beast so they pulled it out of the roads. Basically if you want some kind of informative conclusion, the US 25 year import rule applies to any kind of car, that was originally not intended to be sold in the US. Back in the 1980's when japanese cars became more and more popular, the more expensive european cars weren't able to compete with the prices. So during late 80's, a bunch of Mercedes lobbyists were hired, demanding tighter regulations and the 25 year import rule for the foreign cars in the US market. Now some car manuafacturers kept some of their models to themselves because of the tighter regulations, while some models were never intended to be sold outside their homeland. An example of these cars are the Nissan Skylines ranging all the way from the 50's to the last production year of R34.

Because cops can't keep up with it lol. Cop cars can't keep up with most cars anyway. A police car is just a normal American car with a tighter suspension and amost 400 pounds of equipment added into it. you have a cage, GPS, equipment, push bumper, sirens and lights. No other performance is added into it. So saying its illegal because of that would make every car illegal.

The car is not "illegal". When has a cop ever stopped you to ask for your legality certificate for your car? As the gentleman explained, some cars are just not shipped to certain markets for various reasons. I live in Saudi Arabia. You can find top-tier super-cars here for sale, but something as low-end as the new Renault Clio RS220 is not brought into the Saudi market simply because there is no demand for the car here. Furthermore, for vehicles to work properly here and in most Gulf countries, they have to be modified with up to 50% larger cooling systems, uprated interiors, and more rugged external equipment such as sensors, and better intake and filtration systems to deal with the heat, the sand and dust. Most European market cars are designed to be operated in an ambient temperature range between -20C and +40C. Here, the temperatures in the summer can easily go past 55C, which can cause equipment failures and possible expensive recalls or lawsuits for manufacturers. For other countries like the US, the emissions requirements are very strict and many vehicles never make it to the market because they cannot pass the emissions tests. It has absolutely fuckall to do with the performance, price, or power output of the car. You can buy cars much much faster than the R34 in the US... including the successor, the R35. That guy's post was just about the most mind-numbing stupidity I've come across on the internet today.

I've heard that "too much horsepower" argument used to explain to me why Lamborghini's are "illegal" in the state of Maine. Mind you, this was coming from some guy who had never seen a Lamborghini in Maine, and therefor, assumed that they were illegal. Funny, there is at least one here in Maine that I know of. Seems that such fallicies will never die. As for when I first heard of the Nissan Skyline? That was 1992, when I was stationed in Okinawa. One of the guys in my Company had one. Damn thing was very quick off the line, and did my friend fairly well in the races outside Camp Foster at night.
@mikhailkabakov6698 жыл бұрын
What a load of BS. There are many legal GT-Rs in the U.S. I see them a couple times a month on streets here in California. The horsepower thing... Sure 500 hp is a lot, but there are tons of American cars that have as much and more. A Z06 Corvette in fact has a higher power-to-weight ration than a GT-R, and possibly a higher top speed and whatnot. And it can sure outrun the police Crown Vics and Ford Explorers. But not a police helicopter and certainly not a radio. Noone's gonna try to chase you down at 150+ mph. They just gonna track you in a chopper (multiple choppers if needed) - and wait till you slow down, get stuck in traffic or simply run out of gas (which happens quicker than you might think if you're doing 150+ mph btw).
@Skylinedude8 жыл бұрын
What year GT-Rs are you talking abut?
@mikhailkabakov6698 жыл бұрын
Like, 2010+ Now that you asked - it does seem that there aren't any older models on the U.S. market. But the "they are overpowerred!" doesn't hold, as the newer ones are faster than the older ones... Well I was a bit quick to react. The newer GTRs aren't called "Skyline" either. Dunno why, but that nickname was dropped for them.
@mikhailkabakov6698 жыл бұрын
Actually watched the video now. Makes sense. Also - no Russian cars in the U.S. Would never meet emissions/smog test. Catalytic converter? Wat iz that? (c) Unknown in Russia. Compensated by the fact that there are much less population density, and even less car density there. Noone gives a damn about emissions. But here in Cali, if every car was puffin' smoke like an average Russian car - it would become a barely inhabitable wasteland very fast :-D A shame the Skylines aren't available tho. I was in fact looking for one - saw only the 2011+ models for over 50k. Oh well. Probably too much for me now anyway. By the time I level up enough to drive a GTR maybe I'll save enough to get one of them.

So maybe it's good that it has an auto after all.

the main reason the skyline was never released in america is because the steering column would get in the way of the turbo housing.
@Skylinedude9 жыл бұрын
Really? Never heard this one before. Have any more info about this?
@itsmechris149 жыл бұрын
+Skylinedude nissan engineering department would have to redesigned the engine bay so that the turbo housing would not interfere with the steering column of those years. which is why in markets with right hand drive availability the skyline is usually offered.

+Skylinedude how does toyota do it with the supra you would ask? in right hand drive the turbo sits on the same side as the steering wheel. in either case they still released a USDM version, turbo'd with the steering wheel on the left. is it cause toyota decided to spend the money to do so or it was behind the engineering of the engine bay itself? i gave up looking into the "real" reason behind nissan being cheap asses into not releasing a USDM version of their iconic car. maybe overall, they thought about value in the end in the case of rarity.

+Skylinedude you do realize that the EU is waaaay more demanding on lowering car emissions than the US. Hell, if it wasn't for environmentalists americans would be riding jet engines to the grocery store. If lowering emissions is needed, money goes into research, and some car makers just don't care. Also registering a foreign car is REALLY expensive, making it harder to own a skyline or any other JDM or a American muscle way harder then in the US
@Skylinedude9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for explaining yourself! This video is not a knock on Europe. Im not going to act as if I'm an expert in Europe vs US emissions - but I can tell you that every country has its own standards. From what I can see, it seems to be a big debate as to who's standards are best for the environment. It cost auto makers lots of money to crash test and install the necessary equipment/features for that specific country. To Nissan it probably wasn't worth the cost since the Skyline would have had many competitors and was a fairly unknown car at the time.

Skylinedude That's what is implied in the video. There was no justification whatsoever in the video for why skyline is illegal in USA although you mentioned that the probable main reason you don't have skyline there is because it was unknown. One can simply conclude that the car is illegal because it was not known. There's no reason whatsoever for why the car is illegal in USA in the same way Michael Shumacher is illegal in some USA states. That only demonstrates how incredible stupid some people in USA really are. Probably doesn't take long to some crazy retarded leader ban carbon dioxide from an entire state. So every human should be taxed to polute the air with such gas.

Plenty of production cars have "5 and 6" liter engines. It's fucked +Aliendrifter66 I know. It's bullshit, but nothing we can do about it.

+ALIENdrifter66 A car that is no more than 25 years old must meet the EPA and DOT safety standards and regulations. Once a car is 25 years old in the USA it can then be registered as an Antique Vehicle, which is not required to meet DOT and EPA standards, therefore that is why rat rods/Hot rods and things of that nature can be driven.

+Robin360 you really think a Skyline is worse on the environment than the countless 5+ liter V8s and V10s that American automakers slap into their cars in an effort to make them appealing? That's not even considering the jacked-up, double smokestack Cummins diesels that stalk around our cities, punting out giant plumes of smoke upward from every intersection they take off from.

American wins everytime? really? as in what? not drifting but sliding? LOL...I wish u could have a test drive of any GTR spec one day....then only u do the comparison. :)
@wifelikecow8 жыл бұрын
Not really. Both are just as bad. The V8 is putting the exhaust out in as much of a quantity as a turbo'd V6. I've rarely heard of a V10 being a regular amongst the american crowd, even in supercars (except for maybe the Viper). Diesel may be a hell of a lot better than a gasoline engine would ever be (PS: the only good cummins is one in a Peterbilt (EXTREME DODGE BIAS)).

The US claims against the Nissan rocket is HORSESHIT!!! As the reasoning is, it's okay to import Audi's, BMW's, Porsche, Lambo's, Ferrari's, Bugatti's etc, but not a car that whip's your ASSES and your American made Vette can't compete!! Remember gentlemen, we are CAPITALIST!!! We produce item to disintegrate or break in the required interval so we gotta buy more!!! When the Japanese made autos that seem to last twice as long or longer, we all jumped and bought their MFG. Only recently they(the American car industry) began making half decent autos. I am a true American, a veteran, obey laws, pay taxes but when I pay my hard earned money, I expect an excellent return on my purchase or investment. You reap what you sow!!!!!

+RaZaR CS:GO No, it's not. If it was, I would be able to export my 98 R33 back to the US. The 96-98 were found to pass the crash test with some modifications being done and an OBD-2 install. This was in the Motorex days. As far as I know, that was rescinded when Motorex screwed up and the converted R33s were grandfathered in. This why you don't see Montu Motors or Japanese Classics importing R33s

we don't have a skyline here because nissan didn't build them here. it has nothing to do with how fast it was. if so we wouldn't have the r35 gtr which is the fastest of the factory r series. Don't blame America for nissan not wanting to bring the cars here. If they would have made the cars left hand drive and had tried to pass the us safety and emissions regulations then we would have skylines.

Something often overlooked, or not widely known is that seldom are restrictions anything to do with performance or features. Many cars may not be approved for street use in the US for things like the height or composition of the bumpers, the placement of or height of the lights or surprisingly, how many crash tests the manufacturer performed before selling to the public. In the 1970's there were a number of cars nicknamed the "Le Mans edition", which originated from the European race which required that all cars be stock production cars, and the competing companies only trying to fit the minimum definition of "production car", which was having at least 100 units manufactured, and a number of crash tests performed of which I now forget the number. As an example, the original DeTomaso Pantera was specifically built for that race, with only 101 units produced in a factory purchased from the failing Moto Guzzi motorcycle company. The Pantera had the minimum required lights, and I forget exactly, but either had no windshield wipers, or weak ones that would fall off at speed as well as having no bumpers. It qualified as "production car" because there were more than 100, but failed every single road requirement of almost every major country. But after winning Le Mans, it gained notice from the Ford Motor Company and was invested in as a real production car called the "Pantera L", but only after adding bumpers, fixing windshield wipers, and adding turn signals and parking lights. Where this little story applies to modern legalization of imports is that most often car manufacturers do not yet meet US requirements of total number of crash tests performed, or meeting emission standards, and seldom ever anything about the power output or top speeds. It may be true that at local levels, state, county, or city ordinances may have such restrictions, but I do not know of any nationwide federal regulations against HP or top speed. Other contributing factors could be where a manufacturer has such a high value item that import taxes, fees or tariffs would make the final price impractical or not profitable. Anything more would only be speculation, unless specifically stated from a verifiable official source.
@JamesMorningstar7 жыл бұрын
If it is only a matter of the import costs and the manufacturer not thinking the final cost would be equitable, then you end up like many celebrity cars, where you buy it outside of the country and pay the import fees yourself. Has anybody tried doing so with a Skyline to see if it would then be legal? I'm sure that if there are a few people in the US who have them, then that is most likely the case, and you could still get one, but it could be costly.

@plpavon9 жыл бұрын
+Skylinedude again, where do you say it's illegal? You said why it was never introduced to the US, not why its illegal. The car isn't illegal here as long as you change whatever the DOT requires you to change to meet the standards.
@Skylinedude9 жыл бұрын
Not true. Try watching from 2:30 for more info. Pedro, you can't just change the car to meet DOT standards - there's a lot more to it than that. The car manufacturer has to crash test a car a certain amount of times in order to even be able to make the mods necessary for US specs. The only Skyline that was ever crash tested correctly was the 1994?-1996 R33. It was the only Skyline that just needed a couple of mods and an OBD-2 system for the engine to be legal in the states. The R32, R34 etc were never properly crash tested in this manner. Currently, the only way you will get a (legal) Skyline in the states is 1) Under the 25 year rule 2) Show or Display 3) Track use only 4) Find one of the few legal Motorex cars Other than that, any other method is illegal and risking your car being seized and crushed. I hope that helps you out:)
@plpavon9 жыл бұрын
+Skylinedude would've helped if you would've mentioned all that in the video. And in conclusion, the Skyline R34 isn't illegal. If you can have it after 25 years, it's not illegal lol

I know right? How is it fair to make the Skyline illegal & the Veyron 16.4 is legal in all US states when it's around 3 times more powerful? Although part of the restrictions might be because of bull shit emissions regulations.
@Charlie-wp9nn8 жыл бұрын
I guess as the skyline is more affordable and common maybe? I guess that because not as many people invest in a bugatti they will let it slide but because the skyline is a lot more available (financially and production) that it would end up giving off more emissions due to how many people would drive them (I'm guessing that there is more than 3 skylines for each buggati) although I may be wrong.

One thing to note - in Japan, the Skyline was Nissan's flagship car, not just some obscure sports car. It was only unknown until recently outside of Japan. Also, as of the date your video was posted, the Skyline R32 was already passing the 25 year threshold, with 1989 and most 1990 models already legal. Also, due to an importer spending the money to perform crash tests and the like, later-model Skyline R33s are already compliant with NHTSA rules and can be legally imported into the US. For a while, there was a period of time where even R34s were legal due to said importer somehow managing to convince the NHTSA that the R34 was a significantly similar vehicle to the R33, but that was later shot down. That said, cars like the Skyline show why auto dealers have much to fear from the gray market. For less than the price of a new BRZ, you could own Godzilla.
@Skylinedude8 жыл бұрын
+VestedUTuber Couple of things for you - 1) I'm aware of the 25 year exemption as I owned an R32 in 2015. It's an exception to the rule and wasn't relate to the subject of this film 2) R33s do not meet standards; it's a myth. With some serious mods to the engine (OBD 2 install) and side reinforcing, it will meet standards. But after the Motorex scandal, I don't know of a single company that's certified to make the mods. 3) Nobody said the Skyline was an "obscure sports car" especially not me. I said it's not well known in the states. I think your argument is all over the place

2:49 That was a Joke, right? "The U.S. has veryh high Standards when it comes to Safety and Emission Regulations" Please compare the average US Car to an average German Car and you´ll see that the german Cars use way less Fuel than the american ones. Additionally, they don´t pollute that much. What do you Guys think?
@Skylinedude9 жыл бұрын
Think about recent events in the news, specifically VW. Do you really think they are any more efficient?
@berkan2racer9 жыл бұрын
I knew this Event was going to be mentioned in one of the next Answers, but well, in my Opinion this was a Move from the American Car Industry to push their Cars at the Front again. Still, even if VW sold Cars with a discrepancy of their pollution particulates its managable. And compared to American Cars... no discussion Well, we have an Audi A5 and damn you can drive more than 1100 km with one Fuel-Load. So, that´s 7-7,5 litres of Diesel. I can´t compare from my own Experiences but only from the Internet focused on America: Mostly Americans drive big Cars like the Ford F-Series. And well, they are using at least 14 Litres . Sorry for the long text haha
@Skylinedude9 жыл бұрын
+berkan2racer America has many fuel efficient cars as well. While it's true that many Americans drive trucks and SUVs, there are many who care about the environment. VW straight up hid the true pollution levels on their vehicle...how is this a 'discrepancy'? That's a deliberate intention to deceive! And we haven't even touched on safety - I don't know what European standards are but I will say that there are many vehicles that weren't imported to the US (including Skylines) due to their terrible or non existent crash ratings. I stand by what I said about the US having high safety and emission standards. This is an open discussion so please feel free to add your thoughts:)
@berkan2racer9 жыл бұрын
I guess you are right, man. In the World there are People who doesn´t care and hopefully do care for our Environment. But you know, because all the Media 1. Americans look like they drive big Cars and doesn´t care about the World´s Economy. But you´re right, of course there are People who want to change. Let´s take the TESLA for Example...
