This is great advice.. and something I really need to do in my sessions. I need to sit down and build a list of tracks that I like sonically and build a template. Also I listened to your weekly track and it sounds amazing!!! I love what your doing with vocals and how it just fits like glue in the mix.

Enigeer for 20 years and I definitely agree!! . biggest issue nowadays (not a problem back in the 2000's) is actually getting access to wave files (CD)and not the mp3 version (streaming downloads). The public consumes music on the go 99% of the time. I went to Target last year when I was mastering a project and I bought the physical copy of The Chronic and Migos Culture 2 CD's for reference. Using Ozone 9 I am able to dump audio in and pull up the "eq curve", etc. Check it out if u havent... #metypebeats #anystyleanygenre

Hey. A quick question. When referencing do you need to match the tone of your mic to his mic sound too? If yes, what do you need to consider?
@HorizunTheAlien
@HorizunTheAlien 4 жыл бұрын
You do that post recording. Chances of you having the same mic, or mic tone as someone on the reference track is slim, so move closer to their sound via EQ's, compression, & post FX - making sure to go back and listen often so you know whether you're getting closer or further from the target sound.

Horizun The Alien i have understood everything he said, but what i meant was if i dont have a specific song in mind that i can use for reference how can i then find one?
@HorizunTheAlien
@HorizunTheAlien 4 жыл бұрын
@@shansondeshinkolo817 I have heard some people use multiple reference tracks - if they don't have a single one that is completely similar, they find two or three that have specific characteristics that you're trying to get similar feeling elements from.. IE, drums and sub bass from one, vocals from another, I instrumental synths from the third... Ect. Whatever characteristics you want similarities to. That way you're not so focused on finding "that one that sounds similar enough" every time. Although if you do it that way, make sure you're not trying to mimic the entire mix of all of them, really focus on those specific elements that you're looking for from each of them..or you'll find yourself constantly readjusting the overall mix when you re-listen to the next one. Pick the target for each and work toward that goal! Another thing you could do is find an artist that may have similar sounds or elements to your song on pandora, and listen until you find a song with enough high level characteristics you want to work towards. Then download the song when you find a good one. Hope that helps, happy mixing bruv. 👽🎚️

Don't worry about finding the perfect fit, use three or more. One track might be bass heavy, another one might have brighter vocals so by comparing all three of them you can gauge your mix better.

I've been using reference tracks since right around the time CD's were created. I'm afraid youth today may find it hard to get their hands on CD quality audio to actually reference full quality audio. I will often buy CD's or download 44.1kHz/16 bit files of the tracks I want to use for referencing so I can have the full sonic quality to reference from. Using a compressed form like an MP3 to reference ain't quite the same. (Just my 2cents)
