Why are Safari Cars so Awesome?

Safari Cars are like rally cars but for travelling, having fun and everyday use instead of racing. They are modified for offroading but not as much as offoad cars and things like the engine stay stock in most cases. :D

Why a safari car? Fun! It's all about the smiles per mile. I live in northern NV on a dirt road. There are thousands of miles of dirt roads in NV and bombing around them in a safari car is a blast. I have an old cheap C3 Corvette and plan to do the safari treatment to it. It's an L48 car so not a ton of HP (in stock form) but a lot of torque with an automatic transmission so great for kicking the back end loose around the corners. I'm also going to do rally cross events which is another thing safari cars can do.

@@velocitycrew ye old rally raid cars really fit the definition of what a modern "safari car" build is but you can really see inspirations from many offroad racers in many builds

I'm looking to put together a cheap, light, awd car specifically for rain and snow driving- lifting it, cutting the fenders, and putting some some big rugged 20x12 wheels and knobby tires on it . IMO, AWD is a must for this build. As far as cheap light awd cars go, in 2024, your best bet looks like an Audi A4. That being said, I'm leaning towards an infiniti g35 for the better power to weight ratio. A 4 door g35 has a better power to weight ratio than a mk1 Audi TT. Power to weight ratio is even better in the 4 door g37. The G's aren't as cool looking as miatas or TT's, but in terms of specs, it beats em both out for this project. I really wonder why I don't see more of these around.

so the term safari car as we are using it here is completely different and unrelated from the other kind of safari car. the safari car that we are thinking of is a very specific kind of rally car (at least to start) this stems from rally safari Kenya. the toughest event on the historical WRC calendar. for the event, the cars were given armour and lifts not present at any other event just to survive the race. over the years they have been cartoonized by the likes of kelly moss and others. for a "pure" safari car look at the Tuthill Porsche rally cars they take to the safari Kenya today. the biggest problem with most safari cars you will see that people have built is they have no roll cage or chassis stiffening, they have no underbody protection, and they have the wrong kind of tyres and wheels. now we are seeing people use K034's (don't get me wrong they're great tyres and I had them on my 911 too, they're just more oriented to slow speed and technical off-roading) instead of gravel racing tyres. the roof racks are also another modern addition, and again I did and occasionally do still have one on my road 911, but typically you do not want the weight up high, and you definitely do not want to put tyres on the roof as if you do roll over you will not only suffer the damage from the roll but you will also lose all your spares. by the way im not knocking your video, its great, i just happen to specialize in this and have a little extra context to add

I always thought they were called "Safari" cars, because of the "Safari Rallye" in Kenya. And Porsche did also build "official" cars for that rallye - like they did for other rallyes... there's the 911 Paris-Dakar, the Cayenne S Transiberia, the 924 Carrera GTS, the Safari 911, the 911 GT3... and many of these cars actually won those rallyes! So, I don't understand why this video makes out an offroad Porsche to be something weird - or why it claims this is a new trend... I mean, what about Baja Bugs?

Why wouldn't or shouldn't it work it's no different from lifting the suspension on any truck or SUV with the only real drawbacks being road noise ride quality and fuel mileage which is what sport coupes and sedans are really made for but if you buy or build a vehicle just for off road fun than those things really don't matter I really love the looks of these things and actual off road functionality is a great bonus I totally want one

its simple physics, a tall heavy suv chassis does many things worse than a car chassis does. fuel economy, handling, acceleration, braking, cog, aero etc. just because we want some ground clearance we have to deal with all those disadvantages? no thanks.
