No mention of the many permanently closed beaches due to shark attack fatalities, otherwise nice place to visit. You can pretty much see the whole island in about 2 weeks. Not much different than Caribbean islands.
@williamriviere7952 жыл бұрын
Very few places (two of them and not permanently) are closed due to shark attacks and most of the beaches are safe because of the reef barriers. There are so many things to do, you can't do it all in 2 weeks. But I guess it depends on what you like to do and you can kind of 'see' most of the island in 2 weeks. It's very different of the Caribbean islands.
@terom58252 жыл бұрын
VERY different from the Caribbean: 200 microclimates ... where in the west Indies you find that? The cuisine is also not similar at all (although in the Caribbean it seems each island has their own specialties as well). I have lived in the Caribbean and now residing in Reunion island. Being part of EU, Reunion has an excellent infrastructure and up-to-date legislation, very little crime and racism (doesn't which side of the fence one is); least racist place I have known. A very unique place. I still keep in touch with my Caribbean friends and will continue to visit: food, music, carnival, mentality (fun loving people, here it is more European mindset which is not good or bad, but different from the Caribbean)
@terom58252 жыл бұрын
Vegetation is also completely different. There are Caribbean people living here who also agree it is different (which is good)
@terom58252 жыл бұрын
Closed beaches. They are not exactly closed. The shark problem is real, but the accidents happen on the beaches where people go although swimming is not permitted (nobody goes to those beaches by accident so no need to feel too sorry. The warning signs are there. Even in such beaches, where the coral reef doesn't prevent the sharks from entering the lagoon, there are either shark nets or pools made with natural lava rock/ stones. The beaches here are cleaned but not raked and landscaped so for those who seek beaches where the sand is raked etc it definitely is better to try Mauritius next door. The island lives from tourism and people generally speak excellent English and French and are very welcoming. Here is for hiking and exploring the nature. For Caribbean style Sun Sea and sand vacation Mauritius is closer: having said that I am off to a 'closed beach' with my hammock .... serene beach without bars and people just nature and huge waves and kilometres of sand. No swimming except a very small area with a shark net. There is surveillance as well, yes they drive all along the sandy shore and warn people if they have spotted any sharks... But I never saw these kinds of beaches in the Caribbean. Different

@@AzayzaYiseverywhere @David Arundel First of all, Reunion Island was uninhabited when it was discovered, so for that reason alone it was never a colony. For the rest, ALL the current French territories have decided that they do not want independence. They are French, they have all the rights and protections that go with it and to the same degree as those in metropolitan France. If they wish to vote for independence, several referendums can be organised as was the case in New Caledonia, which voted several times over several years, the results were always against independence. The former territories that wanted independence got it. If the population decided that they wanted to remain attached to France, or even BE France (as is the case of Reunion Island), for cultural or economic reasons, who are you to tell them that they are a colony ?

Also, while I was there, one could see poverty in many towns and villages, and the coloured citizens were not as happy as is shown in this video! However, it is a place worth visiting with wonderful views and trekking paths, but most restaurant meals are creole with local fish and rice. Area NOT advised for surfing, there are many shark attacks each year!

Hurricanes at 90 mph - needs to do better research , as hurricanes can have winds well above 90 mph . As it was an American accent , guess I cannot blame the narrator , as the USA's education system is not as good as it's cracked up to be , with several university's recently caught selling degrees , just to gather income - this scandal , has done much damage to any degree holder , from the USA and it's corrupt universitys . It was also mentioned that no-one on Reunion is on welfare in the general population , it's the French government workers who are on welfare , not the population generally , they all work , producing Coffee , Vanilla and other crops . The road being built over the ocean , won't extend their "exclusive economic zone one bit . It's being built , to avert some of the problems associated with the current coastal highway , so that access to the airport , port , and other large city , is not interupted as frequently as it's claimed by the narrator .
