The lighthouse is pretty rad.
@alexanderpafatnov10445 күн бұрын
No it's not. The lighthouse was built by Japanese back in the days they had control over the southern part of the island (Karafuto prefecture). The power supply that was installed is a nuclear battery safely shielded by a massive protection shell. The generator was removed from the lighthouse. However, there is a sign "Radioactive" that is present from those days. So nothing rad but a painted sign is left there.

I love how many of these structures were designed to take direct nuclear strikes and yet 50 years later, you shouldn't go there because of structural instability.

It needs to be pointed out that those Siberian railways were built by political prisoners. People who did nothing wrong, sometimes literally, and were sent to the GULAG and worked to near, and sometimes actual, death.

Not terrifying, but very interesting. The old Soviet missile base Plokštinė (now the Cold War Museum near Plungė in Lithuania) is also well worth a visit, it contained missiles in the 60's that could have been pointed at the West, but were taken off to Cuba during the crisis in 1962 that nearly started another world war). It was decommissioned in 1978 and became a museum and memorial to resistance fighters against the Soviets in the 1990's).

The madness of the Cold War can still be seen thousands of years from now. People will continue to be amazed over time. The money wasted in this way could have made the Soviet Union a rich country. And a little less aggression was needed to compete because everything would have been much better if the money had been well spent (and NOT just in the pockets of the thugs who mostly make up the Russian government)

this happens with any object from the Soviet era that suddenly becomes popular with people, for example: an excavator (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6WZipKenrWmmJY) or Galich. radio mast A-330

@@henkholdingastate and how many debts were forgiven to different countries or how people disposed of valuable property after the collapse of the USSR, when entire fleets of ships (Azov and Black Sea Shipping Companies) or factories and plants were simply plundered for a one-time enrichment of individuals, about weapons that suddenly disappeared, well, you know from the movies (for example, Lord of War)

So many of these places are in Ukraine. Do you know the status of these places due to the war? I'd assume the stuff in Crimea is under Russian occupation, and it would seem like the submarine base would be useful in the war. That radar array in Kharkiv may have been fought over too...
