I think The Boy and The Heron is a very deserved won despite the Spider Verse being a great film. We don’t even know for how long we’ll have Miyazaki and he’s changed animation forever. I think it’s ok to appreciate both films and understand how improbable and gorgeous it is to have a film like The Boy and The Heron on the Mainstream. Besides, we’ll have another Spiderverse in a year or two, and if they raise their game again it will probably put this trilogy as what it is, a vanguardist taste of fresh air that changed the game for animation and superhero films.

I love Miyazaki, but there was something about The Boy and the Heron that didn’t completely sit with me. It’s nowhere near bad, but not his strongest efforts. I actually thought that Spider-Man: AtSV should have won both animated feature and score. Ludwig made an insane composition that is impossible to actually perform without the musicians having an ear piece to cue them into the tempo changes. Out of the nominees for best score, each brought their own flavor and uniqueness, but Across the Spider Verse’s score beautifully blends traditional with more modern arrangements that brings up, in my mind, The Social Network’s score that was an incredible and more inspired wins in the past decade or so during award season. I’m not upset at Robert Downey Jr. winning, but it would have been amazing to see Charles Melton win with his devastating performance in May December. With the SAG nom snub, I’m hoping that it doesn’t signal an end to his prospects at the Oscars, the entire film of May December because that whole movie got snubbed at SAG.

I think the humor had to be toned down because Ricky Gervais went nuclear last time and they’re probably worried about that happening again. That’s just a theory……….an awards show theory.

that opening monologue felt like something straight out of The Curse. actually unbearably unfunny. everytime it cut to a reaction shot no one was laughing. and the way he kept saying "i didn't write that joke!" so fucking painful. gotta be the worst host i've ever seen.

Hey everyone, so since the golden globes are absolutely horrible at predicting best picture for the Oscar's, this tells me Barbie will win. Just wanted to mention. I'm actually shocked cause I thought they would pick Barbie and prove my rule is flimsy but no, they effed up

I think the Golden Globes is boring 😅. I love to skip to award announcements because I can't sit through skits, jokes and 3 hours of celebrities, so watching you summarize it is better.

also I love me some paul giamatii. This guy I played basketball with as a kid had a dad who looked just like him and he felt so dramatic to me so when I see PG it reminds me of my childhood basketball coach. Also he reminds of big fat liar/blue man group which were once scary to me, but are now childhood staples

As much as I loved The Boy and the Heron, I'd still say Across the Spiderverse would be my choice to win. I know that will probably get me some hate, but all film is subjective. And listen, I still loved the Boy and the Heron. BUT...I don't think it's one of Ghiblis best. It's a very nostalgic film, it looks and feels like a Ghibli film from years ago. And the animation is absolutely stunning but it is something we've seen before. As beautiful as the movie is, I wouldn't say it innovates the genre. Spiderverse meanwhile, both the first and second one, has clearly influenced how western animation is looked upon. More and more studios are trying to adapt their style into something else. Across the Spiderverse also didn't just do what Into the Spider verse did, instead we saw so many different art styles seamlessly put into the film. And as good as the Boy and the Heron looks visually, we've seen that style many times before. As for the story, it took me some time to understand the themes of the movie. I didn't know the background behind the film, i didn't know Miyazakis thought process when making it. I just went in blind and was hoping for something cool. I got it and more but i remember the ending leaving me thinking "Thats it? It's over?". As if there was another 20 minutes I wasn't seeing. I'm not saying a story has to have it's message loud and clear, but I would be lying if i said I didn't have to look it up and watch videos about it to fully understand what the movie was trying to say. But if there was a best voice performance award (which there should be) give it to Robert Pattenson because that was amazing.
