As an ex-muslim Indonesian, I can confirm what you said here. I can drive through my city and every 50 meters you will see luxurious and lavish mosques. They stand out between the dense and shaby low income communities surrounding them. As a youngster I used to think where these guys get the money to build all these structures, as back then it was implied that all mosque construction are from local donations. Now, it's too obvious they are foreign funded. But unfortunately, the tentacles of salafism has spread into government institutions. Our current president is smart and managed to reign in these extremists. The threat is not over though, it has only just begun. islamic political parties are starting to openly demand replacing our democracy with shariah. and if that happens, violent fighting will be inevitable because many areas are majority non muslim IE. bali, papua, etc. this will keep going unless we do something about the source.

Sadly, Presenter is uninformed. (Paused at 1:07 to type this) Yes, "Sunni" Islam has, for most Islamic history, been interpreted according to four main schools of legal interpretation (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali), but Salafi isn't one of them. While Salafi-ism's origins _can_ be traced to the writings of certain Hanbali scholars, it is a (historically) modern movement, not identical with classical Hanbalism - though the modem Kingdom of Saudi Arabia does claim to follow Hanbalism. Also, while it is accurate to say that the Hanafi school is _famous_ for using reason in contrast to the other schools' literal interpretation of the source texts, that's an oversimplification and only true in some instances.
@nejm6122 жыл бұрын
Note: though many do include Salafis as part of the "Sunnis" they are far from the trodden path of the of traditional Sunni interpretations of Islam.
@nejm6122 жыл бұрын
Also, Iraqi origin? No. The Salafi movement is something analogous to the Protestant movement in Christianity in that it was born from a "correction", all the other Muslims had lost the way, they opined, and their interpretations of the religion were deviant. The word "salaf" means "predecessors" in Arabic, and has long been used by Muslim to refer to the very early generations of Muslims, often the first three generations, and can be used to include Muslims during the first 300 years of Islamic history. Muhammad ibn AbdulWahhab ≈ 200 years ago, inspired by the novel (ie, not mainstream) writings of an Iraqi Hanbali scholar (ibn Taymiyyah) that lived about 600 years prior to Wahhab, basically made anathema of all Muslims since ibn Taymiyyah. Wahhabis highly regard ibn Taymiyyah, however their understandingsv are not identical to his. It was an Egyptian in the twentieth century that coined the term "Salafi" as meaning to differ from historical interpretations of Islam and a return to the way of the salaf (early Muslims). _____ I'm probably not going to keep pausing and commenting, and haven't gotten far, but it's worth nothing that even if the presenter does present the present politics accurately, it's clear that he's not an expert in the history that he gave us a crash course in.

(Paused at 4:57)... All Sunni and Shia interpretations of Islam believe in "jihad". It doesn't mean, however, to fight all non-Muslims. Historically (ie, before the end of WWII - after which most of the world's nations agreed not to change borders through armed conflict), unless bordering nations had treaties, the default was conflict with neighboring states, be it the borders of the Ottoman state (officially a Hanafi state, by the way), Rome, British, or just about any state. Jihad on the battlefield may have been offensive, defensive, or both. Since the close of WWII, however, offensive jihad has been removed due to entering into non-aggression treaties. (The "Mujahideen" we know from fighting the Russians in Afghanistan, we're defensive "jihaders" (like a "Muslim" is an "Islamer", and "Muslimeen" are "Islamers").

1-All Muslims agree that not a single letter or dot from the Quran and Ahadith can be changed. You'd learn this at any Sufi madrasa or even maktab. 2-The salaf weren't some obscure group from Baghdad. Salaf just means predecessor and the Salaf Al-Salih who the salafis claim to follow are the first 3 generations after the prophet. Again something which is taught to children in Sufi Madaaris. 3-The word Wahhabi wasn't coined by Ibn Abdul Wahab. It was actually a target derogatory term used for him and his followers by their opponents. They called them this as the Salafis/Wahhabis seemed to follow Ibn Abdul Wahab more than they followed the Salaf. 4-all Muslims (aside from certain groups from among the Shia) follow the Salaf and hold them in the highest regard, Imam Abu Hanifa who the Hanafi school is named after (the school that "allows reason" and which the Taliban follow) was among the Salaf himself. I'm not even Salafi but do have many Salafi friends and follow some of their scholars and it's clear that they are terribly misinformed,

I'm not even Salafi but do have many Salafi friends and follow some of their scholars and it's clear you guys are terribly misinformed, I usually really like this channel but seeing how many mistakes you guys have in this area makes me second guess all the news and information I've been getting here. Nahdatul Ulama. Yeah that was the largest Islamic organization in the world with a current members of over 93 million in Indonesia, 3 times the size of Saudi Arabia total population. It is very moderate, flexible, and pragmatic, and established in the 19th century. Had a deep root to Indonesian local culture and traditions aside of religion, that's why they are so well accepted within Indonesian society across the archipelago of 17.000 island, especially in Java island where 150 million people lived. So who is the main enemy of Nahdatul Ulama...? The answer is Salafism. It was Nahdatul Ulama who's put Salafism in check in cultural and social front. Without NU the salafism movement surely will wrec havoc in the country.

Things are complicated. One of you said Pakistan is funding Radicals now. True - And not True. The average urban Pakistani involved in Finance, Law, Engineering, or any other Commercial Venture, knows Chinese funding for infrastructure, development and trade is Pakistan's future, & doesn't want a single rupee of their tax money spent funding Radicals, nor do most of the Civilian Government. But Pakistan feels India is a threat, so elements within mainly the ISI, (security services), seek to use Radicals as Proxies against India. Prime Minister Modi's of India's Nationalistic Rhetoric & Hindu Nationalism & Violence against India's Muslim population hasn't helped that situation. But even the elements within Pakistan funding Radicals do not want to inspire terrorist attacks against Europe or America that may cause a backlash. America is far from loved in Pakistan, but you have to realise literally millions of refugees have poured out of Afghanistan into Pakistan over decades while the 'Great Powers' have used that Country as their Proxy battlefield. All while Pakistan is trying to Industrialise and Develop. America might not be loved in Pakistan, but, in my experience, nor is it widely hated. Most Pakistanis just feel used. For the purposes of Clarity, I am an Australian who hasn't been to Pakistan since I was briefly coaching Cricket there over twenty years ago. But Pakistan then was incredibly diverse, with great wealth, poverty, and most people somewhere in the middle. The vast majority in the middle or wealthy have zero interest in War, they just want to improve their lives, like most people. Pakistan is in no way some sort of Terrorist State. But there are millions of incredibly poor & refugees that are open to being Radicalised thru poverty & a lack of secular education. It doesn't matter where you are in the World, there's always some pricks that will try and take advantage of that. Especially if they see no danger to themselves...
