This was very well presented. As a former detective in a country where there are also many official languages, I totally agree with Matt. In fact, if eye witnesses testify and agree on 100% of everything, there are then more doubt to their credibility as witnesses. Almost always it turns out that they conspired to tell a specific story before hand. In court, when a skilled prosecutor questions them, they usually always fold as being deceptive. The 4 gospels is exactly what is expected from four different honest eye witnesses.

One thing that helped me reconcile the "conflicts" in the Gospels: John and Matthew were the only eye witnesses. Luke and Mark were written from other's testimonies, which I presume were mostly second hand. Between John and Matthew, John's account is from his heart, like the video suggests, the youngest child's lens. Matthew, the former tax collector, was more systematic, not necessarily linear, but organized how his brain processes the information.

I let apparent contradictions get to me in my 20’s. My view of scripture isn’t that all translation is perfect or that we can match up everything somehow. But it’s perfect in its message and theology. To me now as an almost 40 year old…that’s what’s more important than everything being an exact word for word retelling that has no “contradictions.” The message is the same thing in each gospel. Christ died for our sins and rose again as the first fruits to our promised resurrection in the end times.

The Gospels in essence strengthened the churches defences against Heresies and pagan critics thereby revealing life teachings and ministry of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The word Gospel was never meant to be a book but defined as The Good News the good tidings which jesus and the disciples announced. The Apostle Paul called it the Gospel of God writing to the Romans and Thessalonians the Apostle Paul writing to the Ephesian called it The Gospel of Peace and the Gospel of Salvation. While I have not made any kind of in-depth study of the "conflicts" in the Gospels, I have generally attributed the differences to: A) Theological emphasis, or what is the main point of the narrative being told, and B) Witness testimony differences. I truly think this is my favorite channel. You always surprise me by the radical honesty you have. I loved this video a ton. Question for you. I think Matthew quotes a prophecy “Out of Egypt I called my son.” Is that really a prophecy though? Isn’t that a reference to Israel who was called out of Egypt? It’s weird. The only decent solution I have is to say that the 1st century Jewish brain didn’t think of these inspired documents as merely referring to a specific event, but as true of greater things and intended for a larger meaning. This is also how I resolve how the sign of Jonah was interpreted. Reading the story of Jonah and comparing it to the passion, resurrection, and then the repentance of the nations it makes a TON of sense that Jesus is the greater fulfillment of that. Same thing with some psalms that obviously weren’t intended to refer to prophecy by the human authors, but have clear meanings when read in light of Christian events. God Bless.

Matthew 2:23 is attributed to "the prophets" plural. (17:50) So Matthew does signal that the sourcing for this prophesy is complex. It is usually connected to Isaiah 11:1: "There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit." In ancient times, Hebrew was written without vowels. If you take the consonants in Isaiah and play around with the vowel placement, the word translated as "branch" can be read as "Nazarene." This was noticed in ancient times by Jerome: "'There shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots,' in the Hebrew idiom it is written thus, 'There shall come forth a rod out of the root of Jesse and a Nazarene shall grow from his root'." (Jerome, Letter 47:7).

Do not take this as gospel, but a comment on Matthew's quotation about being called a Nazarene (M2:23b). Matthew does not name a prophet in this "quote" (which he doesn't always, but sometimes he does). He also uses a plural to describe the prophets, so we can assume he is "quoting" multiple prophets. Most prophets, when describing Jesus talk about his lowly social standing, his mockery by others etc. Even Nathanael asks Philip if anything good can come from Nazareth (John 1:46). If the Jews were expecting a conquering king, but instead got a humble Nazarene, well, that would fulfill the overall picture of the prophets. My take on this anyway.

I've always had questions about John's placing of the cleansing of the Temple. I understand fully that many ancient histories are not chronological, but are written to make a point. Therefore, there is no historical problem with John placing Temple cleansing at the start of his gospel since one of John's themes is Jesus restoring true worship of God. However, I also, humanly, like the idea of Jesus opening His ministry by cleansing the Temple and closing His ministry by cleaning the Temple.

The question on the original language of Matthew deals with errors in the Greek text that show tendencies of a native Aramaic speaker to have made. The overall question of the validity of the text is not the "accuracy" of the text to a historical setting but their agreement with the Traditions of the Church when they became accepted as meeting the "cannon" or standard they were looking for. The Church was fully functional for many decades before all the different books became available to the entire Church.

The book of Enoch is referenced by Peter and Jude so the notion of extra-biblical or oral traditions cannot be dismissed as a possible solution (esp since fragments such as the dead sea scrolls were discovered recently), YET cannot be used to *completely* clear the conflict that arises from Mat2:23. From a more logical point of view, how do we understand the concept of revelation to prophets? Does it mean that they saw EXACTLY what will happen? Is the end of time going to happen EXACTLY as written in Revelation? Or could it be more like a dream with symbols waiting to be interpreted? Following that logic, could the multiple references in the OT of the branch have more meaning behind them? And were the people at the time (such as Matthew) able to make this interpretation, or did he really run out of prophetic material to use and decided "what the heck, I need ONE more material, who's gonna catch me on this one since the end of the world is coming soon anyway"? From all what I've gathered, what can be summed up is in the below passage: "The best explanation of the origin of this name appears to be that which traces it to the word netzer in Is 11:1-the small twig, sprout, or sucker, which the prophet there says, “shall come forth from the stem (or rather, ‘stump’) of Jesse, the branch which should fructify from his roots.” The little town of Nazareth, mentioned neither in the Old Testament nor in JOSEPHUS, was probably so called from its insignificance: a weak twig in contrast to a stately tree; and a special contempt seemed to rest upon it-“Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” (Jn 1:46)-over and above the general contempt in which all Galilee was held, from the number of Gentiles that settled in the upper territories of it, and, in the estimation of the Jews, debased it. Thus, in the providential arrangement by which our Lord was brought up at the insignificant and opprobrious town called Nazareth, there was involved, first, a local humiliation; next, an allusion to Isaiah’s prediction of His lowly, twig-like upspringing from the branchless, dried-up stump of Jesse; and yet further, a standing memorial of that humiliation which “the prophets,” in a number of the most striking predictions, had attached to the Messiah." Jamieson, R., Fausset, A. R., & Brown, D. (1997). Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible (Vol. 2, p. 9). Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc. The Old Testament passages regarding branch are: Is 4:2; 11:1; 53:2; Jer 23:5; 33:15; Zech 3:8; 6:12 The Old Testament passages that Christ was despised, humiliated and hated: Psa. 22:6-8; 69:8; Isa 49:7 Thanks for your channel Matt we're really enjoying your shows and looking forward to your new uploads!

Thank you for this video. It's an excellent demonstration of how eyewitness testimonies can diverge. I didn't notice, however, any significant contradictions in your children's stories. Certainly not to the level of contradictions present in the infancy narratives of Matthew and Luke, for example. Nor like the contradictions in all four gospels about exactly who was present at the crucifixion and the empty tomb. Or the fact that almost everything in John is completely orthogonal to the synoptic gospels. Furthermore, the synoptic gospels agree as much as they do only because two of them are largely direct copies, sometimes word for word, of the third. Personally, I acknowledge these problems but don't consider them show-stoppers for faith in Christ. It seems to me that all four gospels are based on eyewitness testimony and get the gist of the story correct.

I hold to the view that Matthew was originally written in Hebrew (or Aramaic with Hebrew letters), and therefore the "He shall be called a Nazarene" is probably a translation issue. Of note is that he references Prophets, plural, not Prophet, singular, so it is likely not a direct quote, but rather that the Prophets referred to the Messiah as a "Nazarene". It is likely therefore that the city of Nazareth, and therefore Nazarene, shares an etymological root with a Hebrew word that was used as a title for Messiah, with the most common example being Ne'tser, or Branch. Such as in Isaiah 11:1 "And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:"

I cannot remember which Church Father said it, but I remember reading one Church Father say that the quote "He shall be called a Nazarene" was from the Apocalypse of Elijah. And I get that you might not want to "mess with the Canon", but there are quite a few books that we don't have today that the Old Testament talks about and the New Testament references. Some books we don't have that the OT mentions are the Book of the Wars of the Lord (Num 21:14), the Acts of Solomon (1 Kings 11:41), the Sayings of the Seers (2 Chron 33:19), Book of Iddo the Prophet (2 Chron 13:22), the Prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite (2 Chron 9:29), Book of Nathan the Prophet (1 Chron 29:29), etc. (the last several were books of Prophets, meaning what their book said was 100% the Inspired Word of God, but its not Canon and we don't have it.) One that we do have is the Book of Gad the Seer. The Indian Jews have some of these Prophets that we don't have and we only have Gad the Seer because one of them converted to Christianity and took the Book of Gad the Seer with him when he left. And Christ through John in the Book of Revelation references Gad the Seer when He talks about the Song of the Lamb. Gad the Seer has the words of the "Song of the Lamb" in it.

This was good. The Gospel writers absolutely had different audience and purpose for writing. So they will sound different. An interesting thing I heard about John's account of cleansing the temple. The money changers were taking up the court of the gentiles so that the Gentiles couldn't enter the part they were permitted and pray. They were actually in the temple grounds. So Jesus threw them out to make the Father's house a house of prayer.

i'd be curious to hear your take on the 'descended into hell' vs 'today you will be with me in paradise'... the whole 'it is finished' thing.
