An estimated 172,000 people are homeless in California, the largest homeless population of any state in the U.S. and 30% of the nation's total, even though California has just 12% of the population. So why are there so many homeless in California?

Drug addiction is the PRIMARY reason for homeless population in CA.....Liberals blame mental illness. Pathetic excuse IMO.....Yea they are mentally ill because they messed themselves up on drugs. So 100% of homeless people are dealing with mental illness and 80 to 90% are that way because of drugs. I know plenty of mentally ill people who dont use drugs. So using drugs to self medicate is a EXCUSE....

I’m in Ohio and the housing market here over the last 7-8 years is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Homes that were bought for $130K in 2015 are now being sold for $590k. I’m talking about tiny, disgusting, poorly built 950 square foot shit boxes in quite mediocre neighborhoods. Then you’ve got Better, average sized homes in nicer neighborhoods that were $300K+ 10 years ago selling for $750k+ now. Wild times.

A recession as bad it can be, provides good buying opportunities in the markets if you’re careful and it can also create volatility giving great short time buy and sell opportunities too. This is not financial advise but get buying, cash isn’t king at all in this time!

On the contrary, even if you’re not skilled, it is still possible to hire one. I am a project manager and my personal portfolio of approximately $750k took a big hit in April due to the crash. I quickly got in touch with a financial-planner that devised a defensive strategy to protect and profit from my portfolio this red season. I’ve made over $350k since then.

I'm German. Came to the states 32 years ago. Never got a penny from the government. That would be to degrading to me. Fought my way through poverty. I just figured out what I need to do to stay alive. Giving up was never an option. I'm 55 years old now and I know I'll be working till I die and I'm ok with that. I don't take hand outs. As a simple handyman I made a descent living for myself. Raised kids, employed Americans and now running a dog sanctuary. It's been hard, but in no way I ever considered free money. That is not how the world works. I just like listening to this gentleman every day when I arrive home from work. Let me finish by saying. Nobody owes you anything! Keep on pushing forward. . So my own mother ended up homeless for two years (in the Orlando Florida area no less), it was a number of factors combined that caused it. She got Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, which made it very difficult if not almost impossible to work. She needed to see the doctors very frequently (at one point she was seeing them several times per week) and as a result she got let go by her employers because she missed a lot of work and couldn't maintain a consistent work schedule. This was around the same time that she divorced my stepfather due to his infidelity, and she had nowhere else to go (nobody would or could take her in). So ultimately she ended up living out of her pickup truck (fortunately it had a canopy so she threw a mattress in the truck bed and that's where she slept at night). Her pickup truck was too old to do Uber/Lyft (they require you to have a recent-ish vehicle, that looks decent) and honestly even if they had allowed her to drive for them, she would've ran her truck into the ground due to all the wear and tear and the pay wouldn't have been good enough to maintain her vehicle which was her home at that point. There were a few occasions where people would try the doors on the truck at night just to see if it was unlocked, so needless to say living like that absolutely stressed her out which only aggravated her Crohn's and UC even more. Thankfully she was able to move in with a friend after a couple years and got off the streets, and today my mother lives with me (her eldest son) and my wife and daughter. My mom provides childcare for my three year old daughter, which is awesome for my wife and I because we're saving a fortune on childcare cost. Plus, it frees us up so we can concentrate on work. We're feeling a bit cramped in our 2 bed | 1 bath apartment but we're making it work while I save up for a down payment on a home. But seriously Michael, sometimes people end up homeless because they become ill and literally unable to work and just don't have any fallback plans or anything so they're just forced onto the streets which is incredibly taxing on your physical and mental health. EDIT: JESUS!! YOU PEOPLE!! IF I COULD'VE HELPED MY MOTHER OUT, DON'T YOU THINK I WOULD'VE?!! I WASN'T IN ANY POSITION FINANCIALLY TO HELP HER, NEITHER WAS I ABLE TO JUST TAKE HER IN!! CHRIST, EVERYONE MAKING JUDGMENTS WITHOUT KNOWING ALL THE FREAKING FACTS!!!

I work at Sacramento Departed of Human Assistance… “homeless” in California are issued (minimum) $1,250 per month in ebt (food stamps) and receive $600 a month cash from General Assistance program (specifically for “homeless”). That is aside from the literally hundreds of tax funded programs that provide meals, housing, job placement, schooling. The thing no one ever talks about but what I hear from these “homeless” people everyday, is they are on the streets because they want to be. They enjoy the freedom of getting free money and doing whatever they want. They are not homeless in the sense that they have nowhere to go, it is a lifestyle choice. And California spends billions of dollars incentivizing that choice.

“Homelessness” has nothing to do with housing. It’s mental illness and substance addiction, mixed with being “service resistant”. I have never met someone on the streets because of an eviction. ~ 12 years of law enforcement in a city that’s very affluent yet has a high homeless population. Most people don’t want help. No way this shit is all coming in from China on the sneaky. Just like Meath didn’t happen overnight either. That shit festered in the rural communities for 2 decades before some silly show shined a light on it. (A glamorous light at that) I think the lawmakers and central bankers are just fine with drugs breaking down these communities. idk what the solution is but encouraging people to freely use drugs and sleep in tents and shoplift and defalcate on everything in range is obviously not gonna work. California's homeless problem involves several factors: 1) Weather - it's got the nicest weather in the country most of the year. People can survive outside there year-round, 2) Housing costs - most expensive housing in the US so housing security is probably the lowest in the United States, 3) Drug Crisis - Fentanyl and other drugs have devastated many populations in the state. Drug addicts don't have stable housing anywhere and the tolerances are even tighter in high housing cost states like California, 4) the economy - We've been living in an undeclared depression for 15 years now and one of the effects of an economy that doesn't support a lot of the population any more is increased homelessness. Most importantly, homelessness is not a problem on an island...it is a SYMPTOM of bigger problems in our society - in my opinion it is the economic depression we're all living through now. We're not going to fix homelessness anywhere, including California, until the structural problems in the economy are fixed...and there's no easy fix unless the political landscape radically changes...which could happen but I don't see it happening without some acute trigger event that none of us should be wishing for.

I remember living in Hillcrest back in the early 1970's. Back then it was a charming little neighborhood --- Very walkable, lots of great small businesses. I especially recall the Chicken Pie Shop. All of San Diego was wonderful back then. Spent a lot of time living in the beach communities --- Grew up in Imperial Beach, enjoyed the boardwalk in Mission Beach. It was a time when CA truly was the Golden State ------- Sad that liberal policies have destroyed.

Michael, it is the same in NYC (the reason I left). It had become impossible to take the subway or walk down the street without being harassed, threatened, or worse. And nobody does anything. Not even the police. This phenomenon has nothing to do with people not being able to afford rent. It has a lot to do with mental illness, drugs, non existing family ties, softness on crime, etc, etc.

They were receiving disability benefits and just didn’t want to put the little money they had towards rent and chose to live in homeless shelters. It’s definitely a choice. And yes a lot of them struggled with substance abuse. Also they no longer had support from their family due to said substance abuse.

The number of homeless is far far greater than that 60-70K that was given. Just in my home town of San Bernardino, there are thousands and more every day. The churches and advocacy groups give out clothing, tents, sleeping bags, and food. Since the homeless don't have a trash service, all of that material ends up on the street as garbage laced with needles. You will see it during your trip. Many people become homeless out of pure laziness. It happened to my 3 brothers who lived with my father until they were 40+ years old, doing nothing. He finally kicked them out. they lived in hotels then in a van. All 3 of them are perfectly healthy men, they just refuse to make anything of themselves. One of them came into some money and they bought cheap land in New Mexico. About a month ago I got a call from them asking to send money coz they didn't have water to drink. For the record I am the complete opposite of this. I got my first job when I was 14 and moved out when I was 18. I have supported myself ever since. I don't understand their mentality at all. I don't think giving the homeless money will help them, maybe a small percentage, but most likely they will squander it coz they don't have the financial intelligence. I really don't know how to fix this problem. It seems some people have a completely different type of mindset and have no drive in life, like my brothers.

I was out on my own running the streets of Omaha ne at 13. From my limited life experience drugs and alcohol are the most noticeable catalyst in homelessness. 2nd most noticeable catalyst is the state and fed government assistance. I have seen a whole side of my town (south side all Spanish) in the 80and 90s there was almost no aide in form of money to that community cuz back then they were illegal and didn’t even know how to or try to get benefits. There was smart phones, full of information about how to apply for everything you’re eligible for translated into your native language ultrafast. But the north side of town where I grew up with all African-American and single mother homes and they qualified for a lot of aid in the 80s and 90s if you drive through that town today the south side of town is flourishing with tons of businesses, rehabbed homes, and an active community. The north side of town looks like a war zone. Draw your own conclusions.

One thing you said shows a real lack of understanding of the homeless problem. When someone is homeless, they can not show up for work clean and showered in nice clothes. Just a 1 room studio apartment would solve that problem but I understand that really expensive (like $1700/m) same as a lot of places in FL. There is a video about why Japan has no homeless problem and they have "Internet Cafés" where a person can pay for a really tiny room with a computer and a bed. It costs around $20-$25 a night. They can take a shower. The place sells underwear and socks. Many single (men) live in those instead of paying for an apartment when all they need it for is to sleep. Not sure why it's mostly men. Another solution is to make drug rehabs in the cities where there are blocks of abandoned homes and buildings and teach building skills as part of their rehab- like a work/study program and as they renovate the buildings, they can move in to a place and continue working or find a job outside and start paying rent.

When you combine all the factors including when you own your home it doesn't take you long to become homeless if you lose your job, you still have to pay for your auto, auto insurance, home insurance if you own, property taxes, food, clothing and all your utilities it doesn't take long before you are out in the street when the government takes your vehicle. People are not facing one small stigma of this global dilemma, people are now going to be facing a plethora of reasons that will drain the wallets of Americans all at the same time, this is going to be catastrophic.

There are many reasons for a person becoming homeless. Physical and mental health but unfortunately drug use is a major contributor. So it’s kind of hard to have a job if you’re too busy doing drugs. Also, it is hard to have a job if you’re sick. I have been around various addicts in my life and it’s really hard to live with an addict. I’d much rather live with someone who is ill physically. At least I don’t have to worry about them stealing from me and lying to me. I feel this kind of behavior is what prevents them from being able to live with someone else. It’s like they burned their bridges.

Then I found out I needed a serious spinal surgery on my neck and then my landlord (same landlord) gave me notice on my apartment right before I had to have the surgery. . Had to have the surgery, which completely severed the nerves to my left arm, took 3 years to get my arm back. I ended up sleeping in my truck, couldnt work and family/friends abandonned me in my hour of need. I think that hurt more than the five level fusion of my neck. Thats been going on for 7 years now. Im houseless, but Im not on the street. I have a good deal of physical limitations, so I can only do light work where Im not on my feet, its been hard for me to find work. Just started working part time again recently but even if I worked full time, it wouldnt cover rent here in California. Im looking for an exit, i love California, but it is too expensive, although Im looking for rural land in Ca where a teepee would be an upgrade to my living situation, and an opportunity may yet present itself. Or I may move overseas, it feels less safe here by the day, and I am in a very wealthy area currently.

No regrets. Homeless/drug problem is very real though. I didn’t have any problems from it. Biggest issue in San Francisco is usually worrying about your whole car being stolen and taken to Oakland to a chop shop. They have no interest in solving that problem either. General sentiment around that from officials seems to be that if you have enough money to have a car, you deserve to have it stolen.

It’s been a couple of years since I’ve visited, these were my observations: lots of homeless - especially in parks and I saw them pooping on the boardwalk behind the Ritz Carlton. There were a number of them on Lincoln Rd just off Collins. Some of the streets that run between Collins / Ocean Drive were sort of sketchy - again encountered an individual with pants down (not what I want to see much less your GF/wife or kids) Quite a few vacant store fronts on Collins and I believe down to Ocean Drive. I saw other areas of Miami Beach & Miami that had the same (we Uber’d to Vizcaya and MIA). I was surprised to see that Senor Frogs was gone I would have thought their business would be booming. I would like to see a commercial RE video about Miami Beach. It appeared that a number businesses may have moved off Collins / OD / Lincoln to Washington Ave - it was booming area, the shops appeared to have just about as much business as OD shops. Security seems beefed up in general - very visible police presence; armed security at CVS/ Wahlgreens /liquor stores / hotels; guest entry to hotel from boardwalks is closed at dark - gates are chained. I assume that this is due to both homeless and the spring break riots. I do enjoy SOBE and will definitely return in future. I was surprised by some of the surroundings….. I would like to see some videos of areas like Coconut Grove / Viscaya; Condos around Southpoint and across waterway from Smith & Wolensky.

Not Michael, But I saw your comment about Collins Ave and Ocean Drive. I stayed on south beach in 2016, 2019 and 2022. Post Covid it didn’t seem as good as before. A lot more crowded and it didn’t have the same vibe it use to. Still a cool city but I’m not surprised by your comments

@@claytonelofgren - your visits were similar years to mine. So if you go there now you will be quite surprised by sheer number of homeless (there were homeless in March 2020 - I probably saw 100 NOT 1000 like this time). My point of posting is that 90% of Americans will talk trash about Cali while ignoring their own backyard. I live in Wilmington NC - Myrtle Beach SC area. We have homeless problems in both cities, and it’s much worse than 5yrs ago. A coworker recently went home to Houston TX - she said it was pretty bad there as well. Miami is well on its way to becoming the next SFO. If local officials don’t manage correctly - everyone will flee and tourists will stop coming. If you do travel to SOBE - keep your head out of your phone / stay situationally aware, stay in groups, and get off the streets at night - after 8pm (Uber is safer than walking in some areas). I would also avoid the boardwalk at night.

Love the videos. I will have to disagree with this take though. As someone who’s gone from upper middle class to homeless and then to upper middle class again, there’s an incredible amount of ways to end up homeless outside of drug addiction or mental illness. And there’s wayyyy less ways or opportunities to find housing, a job, and economic stability once you are homeless. Sure some could say, I worked hard and hunkered down on my work to get to where I needed to be, but I also benefitted from a variety of privileges and access to opportunity that most homeless people just don’t have (educated, strong social groups, I had a laptop so I could work from benches or people’s couches). It’s easy for people not in those situations who have been lucky to never experience it to downplay the challenges, but the challenges beyond just addiction (which is an illness that science has proven) and mental health (also an illness which many won’t have access to treatment for if they don’t even have a place to live) are extremely real. In a lot of ways, simplifying it is truly a disconnect from reality because it’s not just as easy as someone choosing to be homeless. Are there some that do?Probably, but there are also tons that would jump at the opportunity to achieve stability, housing, and treatment if given the chance. Also, on the “they should move” idea, if they can’t afford their bills now, they likely can’t afford a down payment nor could they afford a security deposit or broker fee, so that’s also an option likely off the table. Not even to mention the 40x the monthly rent requirement that many landlords require. I also know here in NYC, the shelters tend to be filled up very quickly, especially during the winter. We’ve stigmatized and shamed homeless people forever and it’s really done nothing to solve the problem.

I think your take is the most realistic one on homelessness. If u start out in this society in the working class, and u had a abusive, low nurturance environment with significant neglect, it will be very hard to ever achieve stability in the US doesn’t matter where u go. It isn’t just a they can just move somewhere cheap and now you’re no longer in poverty or gain a decent opportunity for substantial upward mobility.

For a good amount of the homeless, handing them 10K is a death sentence due to substance abuse and addiction. On top of giving them money you'd need to pay a social services agency to manage their money for them to ensure it goes towards their basic needs.

Born and raised 4th generation here on the central coast of California. Everything you said is true, most homeless working class I have met have lived in their vehicles, or with family/friends. The vast majority are severely mentally ill and/or on drugs. Walking or riding bikes into traffic, and screaming at cars. Some sidewalks, parking lots, and even businesses' doorways have become unsafe communes. Understandably, a one bedroom apartment averages close to $2k, but low income housing brings it's own problems. Like they say, prisons make money, institutions don't. From what I have heard, there is nothing they can do to help people get better unless they want it, even though they cannot rationally make that decision themselves. It's sad.

I live in So Cal and you are absolutely correct, that report is a joke or propaganda. Other states literally bused their drug addicts to our state. Others came due to easy general relief and food programs. If you looked at the encampments that happened on Venice Beach, they were primarily drug addicts and hardcore alcohol users. Yes, some are mentally ill baseline without drug use. We, like where I used to live in Hawaii, also have historically large numbers of people who came to the state without doing the research thinking they can make it here and finding they can't find a job they want or a place they can afford and eventually end up on the streets unable or unwilling to go somewhere more affordable. We even have quite a few who want their freedom from the restrictions of paying rent. They do refuse any help that restricts them in any way. The housing voucher program is a joke that gives preference to drug addicts, those who have been incarcerated and a number of others. if you are a single working mother, your children will graduate high school BEFORE you ever get section 8. And it is Not the immigrants from Mexico --they work 3 jobs, live in multiple families in a single unit and aren't on the streets. They need to cut off the resources to those not interested in taking the steps towards self sufficiency and use it to help those born in California or who have a significant amount of time in the state during which they were housed and working. Bill the states where people came from for food and housing. We can't be a sanctuary state for people unwilling to help themselves. Free bus tickets from where you came from. Expand substance abuse programs for those who really want help. Open up section 8 to those who are from California and need help to stay housed instead of $300 a month. But hey, wouldn't you rather be homeless somewhere warm and where they give you free food and yes, you can become a star here and never have to work another menial job as long as your shrooms don't run out. Thanks for voicing some reality on that report.

There is a guaranteed way to maintain a middle class lifestyle in the US. If you do these 6 things you will be fine: 1) Get a high school diploma, not a GED. 2) Get a skill, any skill(trade) and be willing to adapt to market forces. College not necessary (actually a hindrance if you carry the debt and don't pay for it as you go) 3) Don't have children out of wedlock 4) Get married and stay married to 1 person (make the right decision on a spouse) 5) Don't become addicted to drugs or alcohol 6) Don't spend more money than you make and save 15% of your paycheck Its literally that simple. No one would be poor if they follow these rules.

When I first came to the US, I was an illegal alien, and I lived in a tent for the first year. I would stay in Florida in the winters and travel around the rest of the country in the summer to work. I specifically came back to Florida each winter because it was cheap and the weather was nice so when I moved from a tent to a van, and then to a school bus, I was still living in nice weather. I traveled up north, and across to California in the summers, because I could make good money and the weather was better. Crap happens to everybody, but your overall situation is always the result of your choices. When you don’t have a housing payment, there is nothing as easy as saving money. When I lived in that van and I would drive to California or New York for the summer to work, when I would pull back into Florida in early November, I would normally have about $40,000 in cash stuffed under my mattress. I watched a lot of my friends fall deeply into drugs, and they never got ahead. We were working in a dangerous highly paid industry for cash and so soon as the sun went down, we would drink beer and party on speed and cocaine. I would occasionally party with them, but then one day towards the end of the summer I had some cocaine that I bought for a party and I did a line in the bathroom alone, which was against my own rules. I realized that that is how you become a drug addict and so I flushed it all down the toilet, got in my van, and drove away, coming back to Florida to get away from those people. By the next spring when I was looking for the next summer job, a couple of those people were dead.

I enjoy your videos. My comment on how $300 a month would help some marginalized folks derives from the typical fastfood wage which equates to about $25,000 a year, $20,872 net, or $1,739 per month. You can see how that $1,739 could quickly be eaten up by rent and there's no more for food (or medical, or anything else.) It is debatable if drugs come before the homelessness or after the homelessness but the addictions are real. And go hand in hand with mental health issues. I don't know what the answer is. If we're going to let companies pay a very low minimum wage, where will those people live? The small towns where homes are still affordable don't have the jobs. In most communities, and Florida communities are among them, service is the biggest industry and those who work in service can't afford to live in the communities in which they work. They will need to keep a car running. If the car breaks down, there goes the job.

Two issues: housing prices and climate. It’s too expensive for most to live there unless you have a high paying job, plus the weather climate is mild enough to live in a tent year round. It’s easier to live a nomad life while working than trying to get to in an high priced apartment.

The homeless problem is all up and down the West coast, and one thing that all of these places with exploding homelessness have in common is unaffordable housing. And unaffordable housing is a byproduct of growing wealth inequality, which in turn was a direct consequence of the govt juicing the economy with low interest rates for the last two decades. Some of the people living on the street may have had a drug problem before, but were able to manage it as long as their cost of living remained reasonable. They were on the edge before, but now they're over the cliff. And some of them didn't have a drug problem before, but after losing their home and finding themselves in an extreme situation they turn to drugs and become addicted. In either case, once they become addicts it is very difficult for them to get back on their feet.

Thank you, Mike. Someone who isn't mealy-mouthed about the homeless. In Michigan, I volunteered at my Church taking care of the homeless for a week or two every year. I usually asked one of them why they were there, and it was always substance abuse. But there were a couple, usually women, who the issue was mental illness. I've heard from so many of my friends, "All of us are just one paycheck away from being homeless." I was never one paycheck away from homelessness.
