A California-Style Crisis: 'People Are Just Free to Destroy Their Lives Out in the Open'

Drugs, crime, and homelessness are taking over much of San Francisco - although billions are being spent toward a solution, the city's problems are compounding.
A recent report from the University of California San Francisco shows that California accounts for one-third of all homeless people in the U.S.
"People are just free to destroy their lives out in the open," said one local. "Crack, meth - I see it seven days a week."

Democrats do better on economics than Republicans. All the major recessions and depressions are caused by GOP administrations. I was in Berkeley in 90 and ran into so many homeless on the streets begging for help. I never lasted 10 min every morning for money I couldn't afford to give. It was like Chicago 10x the transient and actually cleaner than Chicago at the time. I would not hit NORCAL today for any reason. A dook peppered street with great weather. The US is getting dystopian for the "less than" upper-class every day. EAT THE RICH. It is so heartwarming knowing that gated communities allow for our policy makers of this country. THEY SURE KNOW BETTER THAN US. At least how to bleed the people to make it to where they are. US and them.

The majority of he San Francisco residents are ultra liberal and the conservatives here such as myself, we don’t stand a chance. Been trying to vote these guys out for years and nothing’s worked. Our major mall (Westfield Mall) is closing its doors at the end of July because they can’t afford to lose merchandise to the thieves. LA has a city budget of $12.8 billion under Mayor Karena Bass, with a population of almost 4 million people. Personally, I think SF needs to seriously slash the budget back to $5-7 billion. There are too many City employees, too many City departments, too many bloated budgets, and too many nonprofits with questionable bookkeeping and program outcomes. There is no logical reason for a city of 900,000 people to have a budget of $14-15 billion.

I totally agree with you! I'm in Oregon, and downtown Portland is a off limits zone for us, same as se & ne Portland. The town has become a place of lawlessness. Lots of shootings now. The theives get picked up, spend a day or so in jail, even car theives, then released b4 their court dates? Then the cycle repeats. The Decriminalization of drugs in Oregon with measure 110, has ruined this city. So now drug addicts are showing up from other states, to take advantage of free camping, free hand outs from the state, and shoplifting with basically no consequences, it's a catch & release system currently. The laws need to be changed, the G O V could fix it, but for some odd reason they're not doing anything, and they have funding? It seems to be trending this way in different towns all over USA. I understand their struggles, but many of them are NOT mentally ill and DO have families. They refuse to take responsibility for their livelihood, and engage in reckless behavior that their families (rightfully) won’t tolerate. My oldest cousin is “homeless.” He has a huge, loving family and he likes taking drugs. He never wanted to work, even as a teen/young adult. Always lazy. I don’t feel sorry for him. Efforts to help him have resulted in other family members suffering. One even died trying to help him. “The help they need” is often generously offered by their families.

Here in the east in Ma. it's getting worse than it used to be with the homeless situation too. I even spotted a man sleeping under a bridge in a nearby town where you don't ever see this kind of thing but it is happening now. We even had people camped out in about 20 tents in the town center with children living with them until the town got on them but over all the homeless situation isn't good anywhere in the US.

Free needles and easy-to-get drugs. It's a homeless junkie's haven compared to most everywhere else where you'll get busted for being high just walking down the street, which is why people flock there who want to just be homeless and strung out or spun out. When an entire city decides that 'caring' is the solution, everyone's gonna come looking for those handouts from across the nation to get away from wherever they're at that doesn't tolerate their behavior. All SF has to do is stop tolerating it. It used to be illegal to be in possession of drugs, or paraphernalia, or even under the influence. Now they literally just let it run rampant because forcing people to dry out in a jail cell so that they can re-evaluate themselves, their priorities, and their purpose in life might hurt their feelings! Not to mention, god forbid SF builds a new jail to house criminals in. If you don't have anywhere to put people who break the law to keep them off of the streets then it doesn't matter whether or not you have a police force.

Over the past 40 years I've heard the term "war on drugs". However, there's NEVER, EVER, been any such thing, because to have a war requires using force with weapons to achieve a means. So, if there is to be a war on drugs then anyone caught with it gets a bullet in the forehead. It's called summary justice. The Philippines had this under the former president and it was quite successful. The sooner the US implements this program will quicken the scenes we are seeing in California.

I was in Berkeley in 90 and ran into so many homeless on the streets begging for help. I never lasted 10 min every morning for money I couldn't afford to give. It was like Chicago 10x the transient and actually cleaner than Chicago at the time. I would not hit NORCAL today for any reason. A dook peppered street with great weather. The US is getting dystopian for the "less than" upper-class every day. EAT THE RICH. It is so heartwarming knowing that gated communities allow for our policy makers of this country. THEY SURE KNOW BETTER THAN US. At least how to bleed the people to make it to where they are. US and them.

Speaking from my OWN personal experience shelters are NOT going to do much because then they will be losing all that money they are getting. The Salvation Army Homeless shelter in Las Vegas doesn't even provide food. You have to pay when you go to their cafe. I don't see the homeless problem being solved anytime soon.

Non profits pay high salaries to their employees and officers. As long as they don't turn an accounting profit, they don't pay taxes. So, basically, most of the money probably 80%, that goes from the city to non profits goes to salaries. Now, wouldn't it be much better just to give the money DIRECTLY to the homeless, have them make some decisions, move away, buy food, than hat 80% go to the salaries of people who are making a career out of "helping." This is the joke of these non profits. The suck most of the money up in their operational expenses that are separate from the aid they give. All of their employees walk around feeling very self righteous about their work. They believe they are helping. When I help, I directly give people money, NO middleman to water it down. Here...here is 100 bucks....not here i dontated $100 to a non profit and some need person got less that the equivalent of $20.00. This is the joke of social services, and all helping non-profits. Sure, they don't turn a profit, but they pay super high salaries to at least one person in the organization, and very very little of the money actually goes to providing food, shelter, and the basics that people need in order to calm down, get healthy, and feel good enough to turn themselves into better versions of themselves. I once dated a woman who was a psychologist for one of these kind of family services organization. She made over 100K per year, nearly 200K, as did everyone in her office. I think that is a little steep for someone in a helping profession, but that's the way it was. And to hear her talk about her work, the sacrifices she made for these people, I was like always "what sacrifices, they barely get any aid." Needless to say that one didn't work out too long. So that's how I know the breakdown and how these companies work. They want contract after contract, million dollar contracts from the city they "serve" because that means huge bonuses and salaries for many of them. It's a total money grab....from the wealthy to the multiple degree educated who feel deserving of these huge salaries when really they flow through very little of that money to the people directly. It's a sham.

I am a disabled, homeless woman. I live in the Bay Area, in a converted transit bus, along with my husband and three dogs. Angela Alioto is RIGHT. The real problem behind the homeless crisis is CORRUPTION by both nonprofit organizations, and political representatives. Billions of dollars are being spent to supposedly solve this problem, but hardly ANY of the money is actually getting to the people who it is intended to benefit. Homeless people are vilified as morally degraded thieves, but WE are not the ones who are stealing taxpayer money. It's the politicians and nonprofit entities who are actually taking all the funding, without providing anything in return. The laws against urban camping make it so that MY VERY EXISTENCE IS A CRIME. Where exactly is it that I am I supposed to go??? 'Transitional housing' is a collosal waste. As the number of permanent housing units is far less than the number of people who need homes, when someone's has reached the maximum amount of time they are allowed to stay at a shelter, they just transition back onto the street again. This entire crisis could have been completely fixed already, at a fraction of the cost, simply by the development of RV/mobile home parks - but CA property owners are afraid that solving the problem will ultimately have a negative impact on property values, and therefore refuse to embrace the one thing that might actually solve the problem. Homeless people have less influence, less money, and less power, than anyone else in the social hierarchy. How is then that WE are responsible for the situation? Stop harassing us, and destroying everything we have, and just change the land use ordinances/zoning laws to allow for the development of RV parks. This entire issue could be solved in less than a month were it for the greed of The Powers That Be.

Zero stress, no rent,no bills, no bill collectors, no job, nobody telling you what to do, Pay no taxes,no electric bill, no car payment, nothing. Free food,bed and shower at the homeless shelter. If I woke up with 2 dollars in my pocket,that meant I could drink with the boys and gamble In the ally craps game all day. No a worry in the world of what’s happening anywhere else. So when you see these videos of people who been on the streets 10,15 20 years, they are Perfectly happy where there at. It’s by choice.
