The energy required to make the glass panels and transport them to site and install them on concrete is more than the panels generate as the panels are not 100% efficient, full sunshine is not constant, and lifespan reduces efficiency. Not to mention they pollute the ground they are installed on.

NOTHING is EVER 'cheaper to buy'. If it is really cheaper to MAKE OR SUPPLY then it is TAXED accordingly. RENEWABLES not only cost the taxpayer to install but we pay 24% tax for the privilege OF THEIR USE and the power provided attracts 5% VAT. I am old enough to remember that we were told NUCLEAR POWER WOULD BE FREE, YES, REALLY, FREE. IT NEVER HAS BEEN and we pay the above taxes for it now. Solar only provides power when there is sufficient LIGHT which is not at night and varies hugely in the daylight when it rains, snows, there is frost, when dirty and of course if it is cloudy.

Why are these solar panel companies not looking to all the very low quality land we have across the country to place these panels instead of taking up top quality production ground! Most of the Wind turbine are on this type of ground so why not combine the two forms of energy where you would reduce the cost due to having them all entering the grid at a single point rather than in separate places!

At least three years ago i know of a couple of brothers with a farm each near Clarksons Farm. Beautiful countryside and land. They received letters offering them money to give up some portions of land for solar panel farm.... not rubbish areas of the farms but land they would grow crops on....at that time they were saying no...but three year's on who knows !

The farm behind our house near Bolton has been in partnership with big energy for the past 7 years using solar panels to generate electricity, some consider it a blot on the landscape but it hasn't been an issue so far as far as I know. The lease was granted by the council for ten years with an option for an extension of up to twenty years i believe.

Having multiple sources of power seems like the way to go, farmers should continue to deliver their usual services, solar development should only take place where the residents are accepting of the solar plants in their town or property, their should be an awareness being made of the downsides to solar technology and the polution emmiting from this technology before implementing it, very important to know

I don’t know how true it is but I was once told there’s also another reason they do this, if you put a solar farm on green belt land after 10 years it is automatically reclassified as a brown field site, and I heard that these companies that lease these fields then offer the farmer “an offer that cannot be refused” for the land and then pull out the solar farm and build houses on it.

Richard, the Light newspaper should probably be retitled The Light Angle newspaper for more reach and success. Think of the wonderful Light Angle in Edinburgh and Kirkcudbright for example, that attracted poets, artists and photographers past and present and tomorrow. You get a breath of fresh air in such places too and the newspaper's a breath too, plus wants to be more global, could be a brighter move?

If you are referring to the Mallard Pass site up for 'conversion' that is 'only' 880 hectares or 2,200 acres across Lincolnshire and into Rutland west of the A1 and does indeed have a substation. But 27,000 acres sounds like somewhere else in the county as well. All truly a tragedy. Will look forward to your interviews.
