Had 2 different luthiers tell me my 1977 D25m is special. For whatever reason, it sounds just incredible. I bought it for $20 from the trunk of a car. It was buried under trash and the strings were rusted. It had a bit of water stain started on the finish, but that cleaned off. The luthiers told me to never sell it. And I won't.

I have to respectfully disagree with you on something. Most of the older Guilds(American made) with the arched backs have solid sides and tops(of course). The arched backs were the only laminate part of the guitar.. I have a 90's D4 and JF30 and that is the case with both. I've confirmed this on the Guild website. Either way they're awesome guitars.

I agree! I have a 1988 D25 SB, the sides on these are solid mahogany and the backs are steam pressed, arched laminated mahogany. I've played many of these and feel that the arched back guitars are superior in sound quality and projection to the flat, braced back ones. D25's are pure gold and still affordable.

There are many great acoustic guitars made by builders other than Martin, Taylor or Gibson. Love the videos that highlight some of the less talked about brands. They may be sleepers, but they are beautiful players

First Church: i actually put Guild in the same category as Martin and Taylor, i look at Taylor, Martin, and Guild as the big 3, rather than Gibson because there better at making electric guitars. not that they don't make good Acoustics, but the price on there's doesn't match the performance like it does on a Martin or Taylor. Guild has some higher priced stuff that easily matches Gibson. i love Les Paul's, but Gibson is not the first name i think of for Acoustic. Epiphone has the same exact Acoustics for a fraction of the price. obviously outside of the Acoustic world, ya the name Guild isn't as common as Taylor and Martin, but those that know there Acoustic history knows about Guild. Gibson got included as part of the big 3, because people talk about them alot. there was a time when Gibson wasn't part of the discussion, Epiphone at one point was better at making Acoustics than Gibson, but during the early to mid 2000's that's where things tip the scale for Gibson. i still put Martin and Taylor ahead of Gibson, but Guild is up there in my opinion. because while they do have some affordable guitars, they do have there more expensive stuff like Taylor.

My 1979 Guild F212XL NT is an amazing sounding 12 string guitar. I've had it since the early 80's. I have a 1996 Guild JF-55 (6 string jumbo) with a rare 1 3/4" nut. So smooth & easy to play with a very big sound.

I have both a mid 70’s D-35 and a mid 80’s D-25. When it came time to retire a Yamaha red label that had taken one too many hits I wanted a guitar with serious projection and the D-25 got mentioned in that regard many times and Ritchie Havens used Guilds and was loud as hell so I picked one of those up and later on a D-35. I don’t know why they’re undervalued, usually in the vintage world if it’s cheap unfortunately it means it’s because it’s nothing to write home about.

Just got a 1980 d25 sunburst, I'm full-blown in love. It has a strong mid-range and mics up really really well. It requires very little eq and sits in mixes with ease. Not many guitars can do that. I've always had to fight with acoustics.

@danielmiller5521
@danielmiller5521 2 жыл бұрын
@@luka3450 $700-800, I'd pay up to $1,000 if it's been set up and absolutely ready to go. Anything more than $1000, I feel, is too much unless maybe it's in NOS territory. Likely, you'll find one that just needs a little work. Take it to a luthier and see what needs be done before committing!!! If any fret work or any neck work needs to be done, keep looking. I installed a new bone nut and bone saddle and was able to adjust the truss rod no problem. Check check check. Hope that helps. Get yourself a Guild!

GC is annoying for all the reasons, but with vintage gear you get 3 days with it, enough time to take it to a luthier. If you don't like it, you just have to eat the shipping, which is always way cheaper than it should be. Always smart to send it to the store and unbox it there in case something went wrong during shipping.

I love my Guilds. With a 12" fretboard radius, and 1 11/16" nut width they are very easy to play - especially if you play "thumb over" for Barre chords, and don't have long fingers. Guilds famously have excellent balance from string to string. The bass strings do not overpower the treble strings, as they often do on Martins. I find the necks more comfortable to play than Martin necks.. Gibson's most iconic acoustic is the J-45. It always has had a short scale, unlike Guilds. The standard Gibsons have a 12" fretboard radius, and a 1 3/4" nut width. Standard model Guilds have a long scale length like most Martins. The import model Guilds and many of the less expensive Gibson models have a 16" fretboard radius, as do all Martins. Guitar specs can be a moving target.

That D55 is awesome. I have two F512 (one a 1975 Westerly, the other a 2009 New Hartford; different, but both great; I set up one with only 6 strings, so, in effect, an F50R). For me, the unique Guild sound is a warm midrange presence you don't hear with the other manufacturers and great balance everywhere on the neck. Martin has a scooped sound (wonderful bass and treble); Gibson has a treble emphasis that sounds great on cowboy chords. Taylor is probably the closest of the other three to Guild.

I have a 1979 Guild D35NT - love it. When I got it, I also had a lower-end Martin. The Martin ended up staying in the case too much after that, and I parted with it. You are so right when you say "sweet sound", especially when tuned double drop-D. Picked it up in 2012 for a song, and will never part with it.

I have a 38 year-old, 1984, D-35 natural top and a 40 year-old, 1982, factory 2nd, D-25 mahogany top. I bought both “new” and play them regularly. Both are finally headed to the shop this spring. The D-25 needs a neck reset and a fret job. The D-35 needs frets and some cracks in the back repaired (it took a scary fall about 10 years ago). It may need also need a neck reset, I’ll see what they think at the shop.

Thanks for this, Jeremy - I love old Guilds. My first good guitar way a 1976 D25C (wish I still had it). I have two D25M’s now, selling the clean 1973 arch-back tomorrow, hopefully. I will keep the ‘71 flat back, which is so incredibly beat up, but plays sweetly and so easy. I also have a ‘68 F212 12-string, also quite beat up, but plays great. Keep showing us nice old Guild’s!

Now I just got a Guild. It’s an early 70’s D-35 and I love it. But I want to say, as a mostly electric guitarist, specifically a Rickenbacker user, I think I can say more than anyone out there. $1,500 is not cheap... like at all. Actually I recently got into the acoustic market and I’m blown away by just how expensive they are. Rickenbackers have long been called overpriced (I disagree, play one long enough and you’ll realize just how well built they are). But I can get a 620 (fantastic guitar) for around the price of a basic American made Guild or Martin. And man I can get a vintage 360/12 for the price of a basic Gibson acoustic. Why are they so expensive, I just don’t get it

You already helped me. I am just starting on my Guitar journey (I am 59). I made a mistake and bought a cheap guitar that killed my fingers. Watching your videos I went to a guitar shop and played many Guitars. I went with the MIM X series Martin Dread with a solid top and HPL sides. I love it!! So much better and easier to play. I will want a Vintage guitar but only after I learn more about playing. BTW I am a local Virginian too and just moved back last year from San Diego. I grew up in Winchester. Thanks and God bless.

I have a question: I am a beginner in guitar and my teacher confirms that a guitar sounds better when played in the center of the rosette. However, I see many talented guitarists, like yourself, playing slightly to the right of the rosette. The sound is very different and from my point of view much worse. It becomes metallic and imho does not represent the qualities and potential of the instrument! My question: is it done on purpose. Is this more metallic sound what you are looking for? Thank you for your answer!

The closer to the neck you get, the less articulate the notes become. Soundwise, people prefer either-or, I prefer around the soundhole generally, as well. At a technical standpoint closer to the bridge allows faster single string playing, because the strings have less side to side movement. Go watch classical guitarists play music with tremolo sections, they tend stay around the soundhole mostly but when they start using the tremolo technique, their picking hand almost always shifts away from the soundhole.

Simple. They don’t have “C.F. Martin” plastered on the headstock. I’ve owned mostly late 50’s early 60’s Guilds 1969 BRW D-50 1968 D-40 1964 F-212 And additionally late 80’s D-46 I currently have a 2009 D-40 Bluegrass Jubilee with the Adirondack top made in CT. I’ve enjoyed all of them and at one time they were bargain basement prices. I paid 1200 for the D-50 in 2013 and 895 for the newer D-40 BG just last year. The others way less than $1000. I think the 68 D-40 was $695 maybe in 2010 You could find those D-25s at $500 in any color as well as the 12 string version. They’re hard to find now at prices like this and it’s only been just about five years ago for the older ones.

Great video! I love my old and new Guilds. And yes, Cordoba did a great job with preserving that Guild sound. You just touched the problem with neck resets. My 79 D25 sounded incredible but needed a neck reset. My luthier gave me the contact info for the Guild specialist because he did not want to reset the neck. He did my Martin so it’s not a matter of him not being able to do a re-set. The necks were not simple dovetails according to the specialist. (He worked for Westerly for many years and and actually assembled/set the necks). The cost to do it “right” was more than I paid for the guitar. My luthier then suggested a neck re-fret, which was needed anyway, and he steamed it back. That whole process cost about 50% of what I paid (thank you Mr Awesome Luthier). Maybe that’s why they are not more popular - because a Guild that needs work is going to be a costly endeavor. I am not a luthier so I just go by what my guy tells me. When he refuses a job and then refers me to the “expert” I will listen.

Ciao! beautiful video! What can you tell us about the Gulid D-4? My 1983 D-4 is great! Sounds beautiful: Solid Top and Side with mahogany laminate back ... but sometimes I prefer it to my D-28 Marquise ... I write from Italy sorry my terrible english but i am using google translator ... Ciao

I need a 000 size guitar. Could you talk about how Guild designates size. A D in the model designation is obvious but they do make smaller ones. So how do I know what to shop for? It would be interesting if you could do some sort of a comparison using their smaller models. Thanks.

OM is similar to a 000, it just has a longer scale length. M’s are a bit smaller than an OM. I don’t think guild currently has an American made OM, but they do have American made M models. Currently Guild names use the body shape- M, OM, or D followed by a two ore three digit number. Two digits are American made. Three digits are imports. If the three digits star with a 1 then they are solid wood, a 2 means they have laminate back and sides. This is for 6 string guitars, 12 strings follow a similar system.

@@stak45dx1 Thank you. I spent some time on this last night. Sometimes they call the M20 a parlor guitar and others at least similar to an 000 which isn't at least in my opinion parlor size. It is actually somewhere between a OOO and a OO an as an all mahogany guitar it's is essentially a 00.5 Martin 15M at a higher price. Guild is much more oriented toward Ds than smaller instruments.

You can have all the martin guitars you want,Martin your buying a name Taylor Guild both way better than Martin ,I have owned many Martin guitars and still do .In my opinion Taylor has martin beat in looks sound and playability ,To find a good martin it's a search there's good ones if you can find them ,Taylor don't make a bad sounding guitar not that I've ever seen or ever heard .Taylor is way ahead of other guitars.

D25 sounds killer The other guild have to much bottom end in my opinion. For live and for studio use that is. It Can be eq’ed but d25 is the best sounding guild for most purposes.

I am so not nor ever have I been a Guild fan. Been playing over 50 years and nope not for me ... Having said that, the D-55 is a great sounding guitar. IMO proves that you get what you pay for. There is no comparison between the D25-35 and that D-55 other than the Guild on the head stock.

In with the other comments here, I want to add my agreement about Guild being king of 12-string, and I feel the need to chime in about some of the "sleeper" or "outlier" guitars that you seem to shy from. I'm a guitar enthusiast, and I have almost as much fun fixing them up as I do playing them. I have been lucky enough to find a pile of guitars that have been great fun to play, and many of them are great sounding and well balanced tonally. I understand the attraction to the boutique / bespoke / old-guard / top shelf guitars you spend the majority of your time with, but my $600 1980 Alvarez 5013 would stand up to the $1000 D-25 in this video without giving away any of the sound that comes over the video (and, yes, I do understand recording losses). My $900 1981 Alvarez-Yairi DY-53 would embarrass the $1500 D-35 in this video. It would be fun to see you feature a mid-80's Sigma, or a 1974 to 1990 Alvarez with solid top and laminate back and sides, or a "vintage" Alvarez-Yairi. There's so many decent guitars out here that are coming into the "vintage" age range and are available under your "affordable" $1500 mark.

Well, they are all braced too heavily, don’t make good volume or sweet tone. Guild wanted no warranty returns and overbuilt the guitars. Kids, that’s why they are so cheap.
