I imagine another couple benefits of the harvest house is that it would be a great guest house for when friends and family come to visit and a nice alternative when Olivia gets old enough that she might want her own space.

Simple suggestion: If you are going to use the pull out metal drawer of your Kitchen Aid, consider laying a solid, wipeable surface inside the "open wire" drawer bottom. This will prevent "spillage" from landing on your kitchen floor, provide stability for the mixer and a resting surface for ingredients or utensils being used. Adding an extra thickness will also impact the clearance for the shelf above. Also, the mounting height of the drawer does not necessarily need to align with your counter height, it might be more comfortable (from a user perspective) if installed a bit lower. Just an Idea based on experience with similar installation.

My parents had a vent over the stove to the outside of their house . One problem was cleaning grease, debris and schmutz out of the piping. The venting system was not constructed to make it easy to do that. Another issue was keeping the cold air from coming into the kitchen in the Winter.
@StoneKathryn
@StoneKathryn Жыл бұрын
We have a damper in our vent that keeps the cold out if the fan isn't running. The pipe does get a little cold though.

Personally believe that a KitchenAid should always be on a countertop due to it's weight. When using it the vibrations coming from it on that shelving is going to cause things to vibrate around so keep a eye on that. Looking forward to seeing you vent that stove since it's not against a main wall. Everything is looking good.🍀
@StoneKathryn
@StoneKathryn Жыл бұрын
You may be right. I didn't think about the vibrating. I hope it won't be too bad. I have the pull out shelves in my kitchen but I don't have any appliances on them. I hope this all works for them. Have a great weekend!

Love the appliance pantry. I did the same thing when we remodeled our kitchen. We have our vita mix, toaster and coffee maker in there for the main shelf at counter height and everything else is on the shelves below. We leave it open when we are making coffee. We put the other appliances like the slow cooker, instant pot, food processor on the counter when we use them as they can get messy sometimes. The only thing I would suggest is building trays to put on the wire so spills don't drip on everything below.

Might I suggest using a 2 1/2” hole saw WITH a pilot bit to make the cut outs on the back of the shelves. Get a 2x6 and clamp it to the back side of the shelf where you want the cut out with 2/3 of the board under the shelf. Put the pilot bit on the edge of the shelf and start drilling. The 2x6 will provide a guide for the hole saw and help prevent tear out when it punches through. You may want to try this on a couple of scrap pieces first to make sure this works for you. Good luck!

Gina ... I love the new cabinet; Great job Al! But the best part is that it will be a perfect spot for the "barn kitties" to go in to see if they fits! Pretty grey stripey kitty was helping Al all thru out the build. Holding the measuring tape, seeing if I fits; gitting inside the box when it barely was a box; All the good stuff; LOVE love those kits! How are the chickens doing in the colder weather?
@LindaSinNE

That was really cute when the kitty held the tape measure for Al. Must say, I did get a little nervous though when the kitty climbed into the "barely a box". I was afraid he was test-fitting and possibly trying it out as a custom-made litter box. No need to worry...Al's helpers are not about to get themselves thrown off the job site, thereby losing their "union protected" pension!!

If you have not cut cord notches yet I suggest you use your 2-3” hole saw centering the pilot hole about 1” from the back and cut a hole in every shelf including the top. Some future project may require a light on the top of this unit and a wire access hole may be a perfect addition. Consider adding a couple diagonal braces on the back to keep the cabinet from racking. Decorative wire and turnbuckles or wood diagonal braces should suffice unless you are planning solid back panels. Your feline supervisor did an excellent job inspecting your craftsmanship. Wishing you and your family a blessed week, gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings. Peace

Another plus is that once you build the main house... and when Olivia becomes a young adult she will have a ready made starter home in the tiny house... win win... for everyone

I think the shelf is going to be great, Gina. I built something very similar. I just used 6 shelf wire racks for mine. I have a number of kitchen gadgets on mine. Too many gadgets for my modest sized kitchen. I like the idea of the roll out racks. I might “appropriate” that idea and use it here. The utility building looks great. Been fun watching you and Al work on that property for the past two years. I always love seeing either of you use those farm faucets, the ones that never freeze.

Al and Gina, I am not a tall person so I would have liked a lower counter top for my kitchen aide mixer. Also you want a solid surface on top of that metal pull out to contain spills, flour, etc.

That must be a pretty sturdy and stable shelf if it holds a KitchenAid while running . . . particularly while kneading a stiff dough. Ours is stored and used on a maple wood cart which occasionally tries to roll away (even with locked wheels).

GOOD AFTERNOON from S.C. I didn’t say good morning today because I just forgot it was Saturday old brains you just can’t depend on them. This harvest house out does the outdoor kitchen at your other house, I bet when spring comes you will have a lot of moving and organizing at both places. I would guess you still have both places, one advantage of keeping both places is not having to rent a storage unit like most of us for furniture we won’t need till a later date. Al you are so smart figuring out all that stuff, picturing in your head and you bring it to life for Gina making her life easier. You are showing Oliva the way a husband should provide for his wife and family, but most important how a father should be. God bless you all !!!
