Why are we getting these returned?!?!? The Rarely Discussed Side of Resale

This video is a highlight reel of some of the worst returns we have recently received back recently. This is the part of reselling most people do not discuss. We also highlight the differences in the returns policies between multiple platforms.

I am certainly nowhere near the size of your operation, but I never get returns. The worst I had was someone complain that the product was missing a single screw, when I know for a fact it wasnt. claimed the product didnt work because of said screw, when said screw would have no bearing on the product functioning. I always make sure to message every buyer, and 95% of them respond and they are always very friendly. Many items I sell are personalized for the buyer, but at the very least I tell them "thank you for your purchase, it will be mailed first thing tomorrow". That sort of human interaction lets the buyer know that they are dealing with a human and not some automated corporate bot. But I also dont sell on amazon, ebay, walmart, or other nameless faceless megacorporation marketplaces.

It was like that in the beginning for us as well. But as you scale you have to cut back on things and messaging every buyer is impossible. Especially while running multiple platforms

I am a dealer in a niche industry on Amazon for multiple brands. What is really frustrating is when it is blatant fraud. When a cheap item is returned in a high end item's box, I get a little hot under the collar. Unfortunately, it happens to us so much that it has made me lose some faith in the goodness of people in general.

Some of these are legit BS but what do you expect the guy with the hose to do? He used it, realized it was shit, repackaged it as best he could, and returned it. Why would walmart deny that return? If 30-40% of them came back its obviously a shit product... how do you expect someone to test that and return it any differently than the way that guy did?

Why do buyers buy stuff from sellers who specifically state no refunds and then expect a return for an item they don't like. Companies like Walmart etc should honor the sellers return policy especially if buyers remorse. Or if they do, then buyer should lose out on shipping both ways. What's the point of a return policy then.

Valid point, and we are fine with that. Our issue was more with the hoses that were used for years and swapped with ours that we get back. You can tell when something is tried or old and used for a while.

Walmart forces a 30 money back guarantee on its sellers, Ebay lets you pick and then honors it as it wishes.

I was selling on Ebay since the late 90's and finally closed shop in 2023. Fees, returns and shipping were ever increasing while Ebay only got worse and worse for allowing scammers to run their grifts. Great video, thanks!

These people are commiting mail fraud which is a federal offense. It has become the norm for people to do this.

I hate when Ebay knows you were scammed yet say sorry, its just the cost of doing business. I had electronics returned that was marked for parts, as-is, un-tested, no returns....yet 29 days later a return opens up saying screen does not work... Ebay of course says I must accept return and what do I get back...an empty shell, he took all the parts.... so now, I sell every component individually to minimize fraud. Electronics and video games are the biggest scam categories.

Ebay doesn't release them before it is received back, but they also do not give you many options when there is an issue so your hands are tied

Couldn't you have a little station with a top down overhead camera where you open up all returns, so it's all recorded on video you opening it up and proving the fraud? Or would the selling platforms still note care even if you had video proof of it? Not really feasible or worth the time for the 10, 20 dollar items maybe... but for that like $290 fire starting item must be painful to open a box and it be empty. Feel like having the video proof of you opening it showing fraud instead of it being a "he said she said" situation complaint would work no?

I don't think these companies would care, they have their standards as to when they side with the buyer and when they side with the seller. I could be wrong though. Overall it would definitely not be worth the time in our opinion taking into account the actual small percentage of money we lose in comparison to sales. In essence it cost less taking the loss (monetarily) than spending time trying to prevent scamming

Isn't there some kind of validity to your claims when there is such a huge discrepancy in box weight? Or are the prepaid labels you send to the buyers covered for its original weight and then the USPS or Fedex never weight it to verify? Because if they send back an empty box, if it were weighed before receiving I feel like it should be sided 100% with the seller. Now I suppose veteran scammers will really get creative with using an at home scale to pack out a package to match original weight specs or put their old one, but its one more hurdle to protect a seller in events such as this. Not sure how you can be upset that people used the item they ordered though. They obviously ordered it to use it so to expect it returned back as brand new is not realistic. What should be expected it everything that came with the product. If that isn't included, the seller should have protection.

They are prepaid return labels, so there is no way to use that as a means of proof We definitely expect people to open products and try them and try on shoes and to be receiving some of those back, but some of the things we get back have clearly been used for a long period of time before being returned.

@@RetailResale I think a better system would be that the package would need to be authenticated prior to being received by the carrier. Even if its just a check of weight. That has the potential to cut down things significantly. If the package is not within the weight range give or take, the package will be returned to sender with the notice of rejection. If they don't fit the criteria to ship it back, they will bear the cost of the product. Perhaps you can offer a partial refund at your own discretion and it would be at their cost to ship it back if it is rejected by carrier. I think this would be a better system.

Selling on Walmart and Amazon, that's unfortunately what it has come to with buyers, it's their personal playground. They will return either their old product or nothing and still get refunded and they know that. That's why I stick to eBay, there's still issues from time to time with returns but if it's not what was shipped out, at least you have a better chance at getting your money back.

If you're selling something and more than 50% of it gets returned then the buyers aren't the problem. Returning partial items is just straight up stealing though.

You guys are lying about the price of the light charger, they are clearly selling for much less than $30, had to hit pause once I noticed you were just straight up lying, which makes your side of any story, in any content you will ever post suspect. In fact one seller clearly was asking 10.99 and took less. One would clearly take a 10-12 dollar offer with free shipping, etc.
