50 degrees in central Massachusetts and the bees are flying like crazy this sunny day. I am feeding 2:1. 4 hives are taking about 25 lbs of sugar a week. Probably won't switch to sugar until December. I use your feeders. You are right, they are great. BTW, these are bees I got from you guys!!!

Thank you for all the good info that you share about our busy buzzing bees but your life too. This Monday it was the high 70's & they were wide open getting the last of the goldenrod. But yesterday day it never got over 55 in Central S. C. No movement you could see. Then I remembered that I hadn't put the entrance reducer in place. Did immediately, knowing they probably appreciated that. Just for curiosity reasons I put my ear up to the hive and listened. I could hear a light humming from inside. Then I tapped the box a few times, instantly you could feel the hive vibrate & sound off. Hopefully they'll over winter well.

Thanks David. Very helpful. I'm a first year beekeeper and this content helps a lot. This will be my first winter and I'm a bit nervous. I have 3 hives. 2 of them I started from bees I bought from you and was able to make a 3rd hive over the summer with them. I'm in Ohio so I may need to start to switch from 2:1 syrup which I have on now to dry sugar in a couple weeks but it's hard to tell because right now nights are below freezing but during the day can be 60 degrees so timing is a bit hard for me to tell when to switch to pure dry sugar.

We still had our hummingbird feeders hanging up, and I noticed some honeybees feeding at them. So, just for fun, we set trays with gravel out for a landing base, and began filling them with the leftover nectar. We hadn't seen a honeybee in 3 years in our area. When the nectar ran out we switched to sugarwater, and are getting huge swarms every day, even in rain and 50 degree weather. What I'm wondering is if they are seriously that hungry, or just being opportunistic ? I'm guessing we're drawing from a few hives now, because there's some fighting going on between bees with different coloring. What I'm hoping is that next spring there will be enough that remember where they found food to draw them back to our farm again. Do you think it could happen ? I'm not a beekeeper yet; just watching and learning right now.

As a new bee keeper I must say this was very informative. Just checked the syrup and it's frozen. Have a sugar feeder that's going in next. Good to know the bees won't touch it untll it's solid, I may have removed it if they hadn't started feeding on it. Are you saying the moisture from the hive make the sugar hard? Lol, your video How To Keep Your Honeybees Alive during Winter was in the margine and answered my question. Yes, the moisture makes the sugar hard:) Thanks from Peace Country Canada.

I am in ellijay. First year beekeeper.. Have 1 hive that is 2 deep brood and 1 honey super. 2nd hive is double deep brood. 3rd hive is a late summer split. 1 deep brood. It seems full of bees. Should I take honey super off hive 1 and give to hive 3 for winter. Or should I leave them and not destroy propolis sealing

What to do? I live 15 miles south of Charlotte, NC in SC with same climate as yours. I have been keeping bees for a year and a half. I just found 7 Supercedure cells in my 33 frame Horizontal Long Hive. I didn't find the queen. I have a Hive on the left side with 9 frames and 10 frames in the right side with separate entrances and divider boards between them. Should I get rid of the supercedure cells and combine the 2 hives or should I just let the virgin queen over winter? Thank you. Dennis (US Navy Retired-28 yrs.)

Combine or try to find someone with a small swarm or queen they'd let you have for that hive

Why Are Winter Bees So Much Different? Like you say less work, no brood to raise, so their fat bodies are enlarged, and they get to keep their Vitellogenin till Spring to start the next generation.

Are you feeding your bees using apple cider vinegar to make it a PH of 5.2 instead of 7.4 or higher? 5.2 is what real honey is, and add enough apple cider vinegar to correct the PH to 5.2 Yes you will need to invest in some PH strips , which are very cheap when considering the bees health. Look up "feeding my bees apple cider vinegar syrup".

Build your self a clear plastic tiny house, to inspect your hives during bad weather. But in the cold, be sure to have an electric heater, so the temperature is at least 85 degree inside the house before you open the hive. Even 95 degrees would be great so no brood is stressed by the cold. About$15-20 and you have an environment for checking on your bees even when it's raining or cold outside.
