It's certainly a good idea in terms of what it's for but I'd likely say it's a niche item. You might look into working with a company such as Veritas who do smaller runs of products but then it'll cost a lot more money. Most people who use pocket hole joinery aren't going to spend a lot of money on a specialist block plane and those that can afford to, just go the way of Festool domino joinery. If you want to produce something relatively cost effectively yourself, 3D printing might be the way to go.
@AverageJoesJoinery4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sam! A custom block plane would be an expensive way to go for sure. Ideally I see the set up being much closer to an existing pocket jig with an added chisel sized blade. It would need the bells and whistles of a hand plane then. It would be great to partner with an existing manufacturer of pocket hole jigs to see if it could be adapted

And whether someone copied it and changed one tiny piece (therefore making it a different product)... On one hand. This video can be used as evidence of your intellectual content and your willingness to share something cool with the community for the good of the group. I like it! 😀😇😎
@AverageJoesJoinery4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that Jeffrey! It’s a shame that people are willing to do things like that but I guess its the way of the world. Like you say its really easy to tweak designs to get around patents and unless there is money to take people to court they’re useless anyway. I’m working on getting the design protected as some form of protection but I love to share my ideas and see what people think. Sometimes we dismiss the simple ones which can actually turn out to be great. If this goes nowhere I hope at least it has given other woodworkers an option for hiding pocket hole screws haha
@mrupholsteryman4 жыл бұрын
@@AverageJoesJoinery I like this idea a lot. I don't have too many needs for it as most of the stuff I do..has not required the pocket hole..but I definitely dig the concept! 😀😇😎
@vodiak4 жыл бұрын
The technique is clever, but why does the jig need to be in the hand plane? Why not just use a hand plane to make an incomplete pass, remove it, then clamp down a standard pocket hole jig? I think you'd get better positioning. What might help is a pocket hole jig with this technique in mind: a wedge shaped front that lets it get in under the shaving, and a clamping surface behind where you drill. I think I'd prefer to have them as separate tools.
@AverageJoesJoinery4 жыл бұрын
I did think of using a separate hand plane or even just a chisel but it would mean you’d beed to ‘peel’ up a much longer section of wood to clear the way for the regular pocket hole jig. A wedge shaped jig would be a possibility for sure. I just think its an elegant solution to have the 2 in 1. It can be used as a regular jig if you wanted by just sitting it on the surface as normal.

FWIW, my understanding of patents is you have to hide the idea until granted. Once you have shared it with even a few people or with the world like you have here, you lose the right to patent it. But I am not a patent lawyer. So sorry if it's so I think it's a neat idea, and I would use it with pocket holes.
@SammyInnit4 жыл бұрын
That's incorrect. Patents can and are granted retrospectively. Ever seen Patent Pending on a product? That's why.

@@SammyInnit TY for the correction. I hope you are right, I have only read a couple of books in the USA.
