Why aren't NFL referees full time? This is a question that many NFL fans have wondered, especially after controversial calls that affect the outcome of the games. In this video, I explore both sides of the debate, and try to answer why the NFL, a multi-billion dollar industry, relies on part-time officials who have other jobs and only work a few games per season. I also give some examples of the diverse and impressive careers that NFL referees have outside of football, and how they balance their officiating duties with their full-time professions.

I don’t give a damn if they are full time. I just want them held accountable. Players and coaches have to face the media for their failures. Refs should to.

I would like to see the NFL adopt the officiating shown in the XFL last season, listening in on Dean as he looked at each call. The transparency would help with audience perception. Also - Your videos are great. Glad the algorithm sent them to me. Keep it up!

It’s unfortunate refs get as much flak as they do. Much more often than not they get the call right. But we rarely ever talk about those calls. That being said I do think there should be 1-3 crews that are full time for training, super bowls etc. not sure how exactly that would work but I don’t think an all part time staff is the answer.

Another quality videos, congrats on the two big ones as well! For reference, the PGMOL is the full time refereeing group for the Premier League, and they shit the bed regularly then spend more time defending themselves than working out what the problem is. Full time isn't necessarily a solution, but more involved reviewing of decisions would certainly help.

A billion dollar industry with part time officials. It is a disgrace. If they want to "keep the brand", they can't afford to have such blatant mistakes like Brad Allen.

Why you ask? Part time officials are the leagues scapegoat for the slighting of scores and rigging of games. FanDuel official partners of the NFL/Vegas says it all.

Hey really interesting video. I really mean this to be very supporting criticism and it's just my opinion/feelings: It was informative and funny, but you started answering the question of why the refs aren't hired full time quite late into the video. It got mentioned so many times I was like "man just tell me already". Just feels unnecessarily stretched out. Really not trying to stir anything up here, I still enjoyed the content very much!

I don't mind that they aren't full-time. It seems to work for them and getting paid quite well. Asking them to have no other job when they aren't doing much for 50% of the year is a tall order. If you want to see a truly unhinged example of refs look into the world of Tennis refs or other sports where the players aren't paid as good, tennis refs have to book their own flights to all the tournaments. The real problem I have is how long they have to ref for and how they are treated as an asset by teams. They have to remain attentive for the entire length of the game so the chances of late fourth quarter calls is going to be more pronounced since they spent all the time beforehand reffing a game in which they have to watch for every minute detail yet people will complain about one detail they'll miss. And drafting up whole plays around the chance the opposing team gets a flag should never be a thing.

I think we would have to look at the current schedule of a ref and see if there is any extra work that would improve their on-field performance. Right now, I haven't heard of any complaints from either the referees or the NFL about their current working agreement, but there might be a confidentiality clause to their contracts. I think if we as fans really want to see better calls on the field, the NFL and their employees need to stop all sponsorships and interactions from gambling corporations. Sports gambling is incredibly lucrative right now and I have a hard time believing that officiating is not affected by this. When refs are making around $200,000, why wouldn't they take a $1 million dollar bribe to throw a flag that would cause or prevent an over/under. The NFl can organize an agreement with gambling organizations so that they make multi-millions, the ref gets a big pay raise, the league gets a nice chunk, and the fans get screwed. Heck, the refs could take it into their own hands and go full Tim Donaghy and start betting on games that they can influence. You can call me a conspiracy theorist, but I do see this happening in the next 7 years, if it hasn't started already.

And when it does come to light it will be one of biggest scandals in sports history. Someone will get too greedy or say something to the wrong person, and then it’s all over.

Also i compare it to how people treat their average resturant. Most places factually get 99% of orders correct but goddam its the end of the world to that 1%

Referees are always going to get trashed because every teams fans will always view everything against them as iggregious. However the last few years has been above and extra because they are genuinely fucking a lot of teams. Before you had the clear golden boys and a couple black sheep teams but now its just ridiculous

According to google these guys get paid 12 grand a game which to the average everyday person is a lot of money and you cant compare them to mlb or nhl because they have way more games then the nfl does im not saying that it dont take some level of skill to become a ref but they arent born with athletic ability like nfl players are so i think that they are compensated way more then enough also i dont know where you are getting the fact that refs are divided up into only a few games a season when again according to google theres 121 officals and theres 272 games in an nfl season when you take into account the average amount of games that are on in an average week in the nfl is about 16 games and theres 8 refs working in a single game that means 128 refs are working unless for some reason theres carry over from game to game but i doubt it
