To put it how solar sands said, "Furries were more exited to see zootopia than cats 2019". The appeal to fursuits is that they are a very expressive physical representation of their character. It's very much a fantasy oriented interest, as even realistic fursuits have a level of magic to them

oh that's RIGHT. that's one of my big gripes with pre-pandemic furry info videos: they don't reflect today's fursuit prices, and kids who come here thru youtube'll be sorely disappointed when they learn how much of a luxury they are now but in lieu of that, it kinda appears that the kids have made subcultures and friend groups within this space that aren't fursuit-focused, and that's alright, but they're not my vibe

I'd never seen one in person until I made my own. I made a semi-realistic one of a werewolf OC as a test and then a more detailed traditional cartoony one; althought I didn't have access to high quality fur I still made the most with what I could get (I know she won't last as long as a fursuit made with better materials but I had money and wanted to have a fursuit) and I think she turned out okay, she's a cream colored domestic cat named Kiba

I broke down my uncanny valley years ago and I don't really like the cartoonish looking suits. I consider myself part of the furry fandom, but I've never really wanted to 'be' a furry, I just like them and the idea of them. I also don't have a fursona and never really had a desire to make a suit up until a week or so ago. I've realized that it would be a good technical challenge and a fun project and now that I want to try making a suit, I'm going to have to come up with a 'fursona' so I have something to base the suit on. Even then I want to make it as form fitting as I can with a mask that's as close to a human sized head as possible. Realistic faux fur however is a lot more pricey than bright or solid colors, so it may still look a little cartoony in that respect. But I like bright and annoyingly flashy stuff anyway.

Hello! As the owner of the realistic fursuit of my polar cyborg fox, I agree with your opinion. But in my case, it was realistic fursuits who caught my attention and partly involved me in the fandom. Given the genre in which I create content (post-apocalypse), other styles of suits would not look so believable.. And in the post-apocalypse genre, the appearance of the character is everything. As I see it :cartoon style - for fun and games with friends Realistic for photo shoots and cosplay. And also, surprisingly, people on the streets easily recognize the species of animal of a realistic suit which also gives me a reason to like them

I had to get both realistic and toony suits. I love wearing my full realism wolf partial I got from Melissa Mendelson Art, and interestingly enough my favorite toony fulsuit is my new panther fullsuit. I will be wearing that one most of the time at Furever West and BLFC! 💗💗💗

It's funny you mention the uncanny valley in that regard, because I have a non-furry friend who is absolutely weirded out by the toony suits, but actually likes and admires realistic suits

I don’t own a Fursuit. But As for my “Art Style” I prefer a “Mostly” Realistic Look, But With Cartoony Eyes and facial expressions. Similar to Zootopia. When I design Anthro characters I try to keep the body shape and size similar to their real-life animal counterparts. ( I even try to keep the number of fingers and toes accurate for some reason. ) And although My Main fursona is CRAZY colorful, MOST of the time I like to keep the colors of my OCs scientifically accurate. But It is still fun to experiment with crazy colors. I love looking at colorful Fursonas! 🌈

IMO its easier to make a realistic suit to look bad than a cartoony one. Cartoony ones are more forgiving on that behalf. I see lots of realistic suits where I live and the eyes are just sooo far apart or the eyelids are missing completely, and without a proper airbrush it wont look as good as it could But if good makers make them they can look really really good

I definitely could not easily see out of or maintain a realistic suit with all its airbrushing, so I would always go for toony or only semi realistic

The community became this style, and the style became the community. It's a natural evolution of all subcultures and genres of art. As a style matures and becomes too tiresome for some or too difficult of an act to follow, it reaches its apex and branches off into new styles. I am excited to see how the growing popularity of virtual reality will influence the style of characters considering that it doesn't have the same limitations of fitting a human body into an actual costume. As of now many popular avatars still resemble a Made Fur You fursuit.

Of the 88 fursuits that I own the vast majoraty of them are semi realistic to reailistic. What I would like is an ultra realistic fursuit but that is getting really expensive and having 88 fursuits i have a really hard time justifing the cost. Do you record your audio first then you replay it and pantomime to your words or are you actually trying to talk with your head on?

Those suits are not realistic, they are semi-realistic. There are still stylized and toony elements to the design. It's kind of like seeing a 2D cartoon vs a stylized high res 3D model vs a photograph. When you make one entirely realistic, it dives right into the uncanny valley.

Finn, I know the answer; You see... some people including that minority you mentioned are actually either immune or not affected much by the uncanny valley of animals with human features, sometimes it's only triggered by the monstrous or menacing side of that valley, actually some get triggered only by the exact opposite of furry, like a human with animalistic features(maybe to the extreme) like the momo meme sculpture for example, that's the case with me, but we're not entirely sure why ourselves? maybe is our upbringing, or it could be conditional... I am autistic 💛🐾🤷🏽‍♀️

I am one of the type that is most into "natural" Furs. Now, #1, I do not want a fur suit. My Fursona is a human out of place and time. But my (anthrofur) Squeeze is Natural. Erma Felna. Lt. M'Ress. Pawly Katczynski from Mark Engels "Werecats - Forest Exiles" series. #2, I am a HUGE fan of Sofia Lioness, Winci Foxy, and other "non-toon" suits. I am not opposed to Toony, but it's not my bag. I prefer species (genus) specific styles. Felidae. Ursus. Vulpus. If you want to make a shark/fox/nematode? Sure. You do you. But I'm old enough to be part of Furry before the term "Furry" was created.

If this supposed feeling of unease is generated when an anthropomorphic animal looks too much like a real animal, how then do you account for the popularity of Tom Fischbach's Two Kinds? The various Keidran Tigers , Wolves, Foxes, and Dogs are facially far closer to realistic than Toony fursuit heads, and yet are quite attractive and personable. Facial expression is the key element, I think. There are plenty of Toony fursuit heads with unfriendly scowling eyebrows and other unwelcoming, off-putting facial features. What's with that? A mixed message at best. How would you categorize bizarre, toothy costumes such as Beauty of the Bass? I find a realistic big cat or other beast with a neutral and relaxed expression to be most relatable. Thank you.

I can agree with you,it depends on how the company makes the style of fursuit in a variety of different shapes and features. But,I know that you don’t have to get a fursuit to be a furry,you can also get a ID badge of fursona which I was planning on getting someday which I think it’s very easier and cheaper as I believe to be better since it’s budget friendly. as a 3d artist i love both realistic and toony about the same. however i find making realistic 3d models alot more fun. just the thought exercise behind it and thinking about how the biology works is so fun
